Ex-UCLA QB, Bloom work out

The Panthers worked out 11 free agents Tuesday, and there were a couple of interesting names.

Start with former UCLA quarterback Drew Olson and return man Jeremy Bloom. Olson is a project, but he has some talent and he could be a candidate for a practice squad spot at some point. Bloom has been bouncing around the league and has some potential. The Panthers haven’t been too very productive in the return game.

They weren’t expected to make any immediate moves with any of the players who worked out, but Olson, Bloom and the others could be names to keep an eye on.

Here are the others who worked out: Defensive back Greg Blue, defensive back Patrick Dendy, running back Kay-Jay Harris, linebacker William Kershaw, defensive back Keiwan Ratliff, defensive back Lamont Thompson, linebacker Anthony Trucks, running back Marquis Weeks and defensive back Gemara Williams.

if Bloom is signed, the women around here will go nuts

Blue, Harris, Ratliff, and Thompson are also guys with the potential to suit up in the event of an injury at their positions.

Why do we need Bloom? Don’t we have a return man? Robinson was our 4th round pick because we needed a return man. Is he a dud? I don’t think so, but Fox must because he isn’t out there and we’re interviewing another return guy. What is the deal with Robinson and why can’t utilize our draft picks. Oh, by the way, where’s our 3rd round pick, Johnson??

I second that Ben. And I would like to defend Fox here and blame it on the recruiting personnel, but at the end of the day, "the fish stinks from the head first."

Bloom will make a good return man and eventually a really good slot receiver he has great team work ethic (all about the team) hes intelligent and as fast and quick as anybody..Not to mention he could learn from his hero the best receiver in the league

I remember greg blue at georgia and he was a big hitter, but not so sure about his cover skills. I believe that he could be a good run support safety but not much else, Lamont Thompson was a starter on a good tennessee defense, he's still young enough. I believe either could prodouce more than marquand manual. At least they could be significant special teamers. As for Bloom he's coming off knee injuries, and wasn't much of a reciever at colorado, whereas robinson had excellent recieving numbers at miami (oh)

Also, Kay-Jay harris was a beast at WVU, but who isn't with that scheme and o-line. Keiwan ratliff was good with cincinnati, he is a tall corner which is something we could use alonside deloatch. I think Blue, Harris, Ratliff, and thompson would be good signings, and maybe give hannon a shot off the practice squad. he was a beast at tennessee.

Ryne Robinson is no bust, but our blocking schemes on kick returns have suffered ever since the departure of Scott O'Brien.
Bloom's problem in his career so far has been his injury-prone nature.
As for Charles Johnson, he was never going to be ready to step into the rotation immediately, but there were NO sources that said he should have gone later than our pick. In fact, there were some places pegging him as a first-rounder.
Lamont Thompson was a popular name around here at the end of August, but there's a reason he's still on the street, people.

Olson has potential....very solid qb, high passer rsting in college, in the "pro style" offensive minded PAC 10 conf. Some Ravens insiders/coaching thought he was way better than the Ohio State qb they kept (because he was a draft pick, olson a FA). Bloom would be a good option also, couldn't hurt. But our ST's stink all the way around, not just the return man (blocking/scheme/coaching).

Coming out of college, I thought Bloom could be a star in the return game, but once Philly cut him, I figured he couldnt do in the NFL what he did he college, and i think he is coming off of a bad knee injury too.

Hey we still have that speed demon Nick Goins. We can count on him to run to the 20 yd line, bow his head and prepare to be crushed.

Granted, pslholder doesn't have any other suggestions, and Goings has a career KR average as good as anybody else on the team, but he's happy to complain.

I am a Matt Moore fan and I watched him make Olsen look silly at UCLA during spring/summer workouts to win the starting QB spot. An injury to Matt during his soph season is the only reason Olsen even got the opportunity to play. He really is just an OK QB. Don't look for much out of him. He will be coaching high school in the next 2 years.

i hear ya billy...i don't understand why we don't give matt a chance. david carr is going to take us nowhere but down. when he is under center, our team lacks, what looks to be, confidence to succeed. moore took a couple of snaps a few weeks ago and completed a 43 yard bomb in one of those attempts. the vertical passing game is something that doesn't exist with carr, however, it is something we desperately need.

as far as bloom....please...let d'angelo return.
