Panthers watching and awaiting Colts
While you're watching the Indianapolis Colts play at Jacksonville tonight, consider that a lot of Carolina Panthers will be watching even more closely. The Panthers, coming off a bye week, play host to the Colts Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.
And although Indianapolis is undefeated again and the defending Super Bowl champions, things may be setting up for a bit of a Panthers' surprise come Sunday. After all, Carolina is getting a long break while Indy will be coming off a tough Monday night game on the road.
"That kind of helps from a physical aspect," Carolina cornerback Ken Lucas said today. "And at the same time, they are playing a team that has a very similar defense to ours."
Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio was Panthers coach John Fox's defensive coordinator in Fox's first year as Panthers' boss.
"It's good that we get to watch them against Jacksonville and see how they play them," Lucas said. "It will give us an idea of how we'll have to play them.
"Everything is happening for us in the right way, to give us a chance to compete against these guys this upcoming weekend. We know they're no slouches, but they can be beaten like anyone else in this league. You just have to go out and perform and not make many mistakes against a team like the Colts." -- Stan Olson

Well Said ken...however If Del-rio was still the D.C. (or head coach even) then this panther defense wouldn't have the problems it's having. No way Del-rio would have let the panthers get rid of and Fumble the ball on getting some talented cover safties....I will say to my Shock that Harris from the bears has been making a lot of "BIG PLAYS" thus far and that's making up for his inability to cover....but That won't last...you can't live off them forever especially vs a pro bowl qb. As Far as Deke Cooper....I never thought I'd see the day the panthers were lining up Special Team! GUNNERS! and lining them up as the starting safty.

Chevon's shift key is suspect... As is the entire mess he pattered out during a "too many M&M's high", no doubt. Step away from the candy, dude.

That's an interesting notion, Doug. Surely, though, your thoughts can't be based upon previous "gaames" played between the Panthers and the Colts. Despite the fact that we've never actually even played them in Charlotte, we're 3-0 against them, and Peyton Manning has a FANTASTIC 1:1 TD:INT ratio. If you weren't so stupid, I'd waste more time proving you wrong, but since you are, I'll just let it pass.
As for you, Cheven, why question what has thus far been quality play out of a pair of guys who have been feeling their way through the offense for much of the season thus far. One thing you are ABSOLUTELY right on, though, is how Jack Del Rio would have made sure we got a quality safety; somebody like, say, a 48-year-old Sammy Knight, or like Reggie Nelson, a guy so lacking in football smarts that he couldn't start from day one for a team that DESPERATELY needed a safety, despite the fact that he was the TWENTY-FIRST pick in the draft and that many were clamoring for us to take at FIFTEEN.

BTW Doug, the biggest blowout in NFL history was Chicago 73 Washington 0.
Posted by: Raleighcat83 | Oct 23, 2007 12:04:08 AM
Two things. First, for Doug(hboy) "This gaame will be the biggest blow out in NFL history." Actually no, I live in Miami and that game occured this weekend between the Pats and Dolphins. Secondly, for those who think the panthers don't have a chance, Indy looked rather mundane tonight. Not saying the Cats will win, just saying its possible. BUT, thats only if Vinny starts over Carr. No disrespect, but Carr has shown us what he can do, give the hot hand a shot.

Wrong and wrong!
Make sure you put your eyes where you can see them Sunday. Panthers D just need to keep the tempo going and keep Payton Manning off the field. They are going to try and tire out our defense. Our safeties will be fine and our defense have been playing fine. We need to confuse Manning not him confusing us. Dont over do it....Everyones on the Pats bandwagon and the Colts vs. Pats game but wont be an undefeated match-up. Carolina 21-10....set that up for the Patroits... Control Dallas Clark...always know where he is at Harris and you or Cooper will get some picks or more hits knocking cats out. We have to worry about our business. Not Indy's. We all got a look at the Colts. Play Lights Out Football Carolina. Fight and we shall come away with a win.Get ready Charlotte first win at home....Hold it down. We beat Indy last time in this same position a few years ago.... Get the ball to DeAngelo and Jarrett, Carter, outside of Smith and Foster. Man up foster cause that Colts D is going to come hard and fast and will be stripping the ball. But our training camp was hard and fast so I think they are ready for the match-up at home.... The league and the analysts are counting us out....Thats cool. Staight Cash Homey!

Haha! This is too much fun! Just a little stat to question... In the past 4 years the Panthers have had to play the defending superbowl champion the next regular season. Patriots, Bucs, Steelers, and now the Colts. To much dismay to all the Colts fans, we are a stingily 3 and 1 thus far. No doubt, the Cartiac Catz will make this a good game! Im not gauranteeing a win, but U and EVERYONE else knows, that we can do it. Just depends on what Pass Defense shows up! GO PANTHERS!!!!!!
Posted by: ROTWYLA | Oct 23, 2007 2:57:48 AM
I agree we can win but,it will be hard in the cover 2 scheme without QB pressure. I hope and pray that the Julius Peppers we know comes to play w/ a bad attitude and an urge to out perform his higher paid nemesis! If we get pressure on Manning we will win this game!

This is probably the best Indy team in years and they're always good. They played a little 'flat' this evening and still destroyed J-ville. Does anybody think the Panthers have a realistic chance of winning? I didn't think so. Colts 55, Panthers 13.
Posted by: Dave | Oct 23, 2007 6:12:47 AM
55 to 13? the most anybody has scored on this defense is 20 since the houston game. last two weeks only 2 touchdowns scored against this d. it is getting better every week. our offense needs to score 21 to win this game. panthers 25 - colts 20

Thank you Michael Procton, took the words right out of my mouth...
I second that notion... DOUG is stupid..
im not saying the panthers will win but they have a chance based on history, and a healthy Carr or Vinny or Combo? and deangelo running attack.. and our 'D' poised to beat one of the 2 remaining undefeateds?
i am glad the colts won.. that will make this game more enjoyable to watch.
may wind up to a last second fieldgoal by Vinatieri or Kasey... i hope its Kasey :)

Does anyone remember what QB beat the Colts last? Don't know? His team? "Texans" His initials are "David Carr"...just a hint of what might be possible. DGJ

Doug,
Where did you acquire your expertise of buttholes? Is butthole sniffing a vocation or an avocation? Either way, it is clear you enjoy it. Perhaps you are from Indianoplace, and when looking at corn became boring, you began your sniffing journal. Good luck Sunday, there will be about 75,000 seats you can sniff after the game. I would rather lose and still live in Charlotte than win and live in Indianoplace. Sniff that.

Again with the buttholes, Doug. You know, Sigmund Freud hypothesized that all children go through an "anal fixation" stage, from ages 2-4. (http://changingminds.org/explanations/learning/freud_stage.htm)
I'm so amazed to see that you're posting in online sports forums, at the tender age of 4! Your parents must be so proud!

I'm a carolina fan through and through. So i will never admit that i believe the panthers have no shot at knocking off the colts. I believe there are three keys to the panthers winning. 1) Julius Peppers has to stand up and lead this team. Look at how he played in our last game against Arizona. He caused two fumbles (one that he recovered himself) and gave the panthers a boost of confidence that was definitely needed. 2) Quarterback play. It does not matter to me which quarterback starts, just get the ball to steve smith, vinny did a good job of that last week and the panthers beat a very underrated cardinals team. If David Carr is to start lets make sure he stops throwing so many quick slants to keary colbert and a few more smoke routes to mr smith. 3) the offensive line... very simple guys... block freeney and keep your eyes on Bob Sanders.

Doug,
It may have been a joke, but it wasn't funny. Be funny, be insightful, or be mocked.
"My superior rhetoric skills are better than 3/4 of the idiots that post comments on this blog."
It's "rhetorical skills" or "skills at rhetoric." Come on, baby, show those skillz! RHETORIC ME!

Panthers are game for the Colts,
Please Believe!!!

Boy these nap town fans are geared uup! Its good. Panthers play the best being the underdogg! Once again I will not gaurantee a win. But comments from ESPN has inspired me. The Colts beta not sleep on the PANTHERS! This will not be an EASY win for them. They are coming off a tough game handed to them by the Jags and they didnt get a full week of rest, also the Panthers are coming off a bye week...... Makes it a lil more interesting!!!! Let The Beatings Begin! LOLOLOL! If the Panthers win this, I just want one Indy fan to step up and say, "They were beat by a good team!" Thatz it, nothin fancy. Seriously, the odds are against us, but MY Panthers team should show up this week against the Colts. Im glad its not the Pats though. They are just too hyped right now, as for the Colts???? They are just leanin back, relaxing. Yeah, I thought that was funny too. We are gona have to be at our game on this one to win it. Im talkin, number 5 on defense, number 8 on offense and atleast 10 on special teams. It'll be a good game, letz just hope that the PANTHERS "D" shows up!!!!

This Colts' fan's take on game:
Carolina catches Colts flat-footed and goes up 14-6 or such at halftime.
But, as usual, Colts adjust, begin a few 10-14 play drives that suck the life out of your defense by beginning of fourth quarter (see AFCCG, Super Bowl, Div Round). By the end, I see it Colts 28-32ish to 20-24 or so. A good game for both teams. And hopefully no big injuries to either side.

I live in Indy.... and you guys are right. It's a trap game. Pats the week after this .. a short week to prepare. Everyone is already talking about the Pats.
But Colts will still win. Dungy has done a great job of keeping the team focused... and the offensive is even more dangerous because the Colts use the short game now to control the clock. It's gonna take 28 to beat the Colts .. can ya do it? Well...

I hate the word "smart." It's so ambiguous.
"Your an idiot,"
Oh, dear God. Too easy! No, dammit, that's MY an idiot, not YOURS! MINE! MINE!
Dude -- this is the comments section on a football blog. We're just primates flinging feces, not engaging in serious polemic.
Oh, and by the way...
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=rhetoric
"rhetoric" is a noun. "rhetorical" is the adjective form. Hence, "rhetoric skills" is a noun-noun construction, and hence incorrect.
And your mama's ugly.

Lets get the facts straight Panther fans, All I've herd the last 5 weeks is how the team the Colts play, their D was gonna shut down Peyton and the O, I DON'T THINK SO! If you can't beat Houston or Tampa, you don't have a chance against the Colts. Your O couldn't score 17 points on Houston or Tampa Bay, we blew both teams out! I get so tired of telling people this, " THIS ANT THE OLD COLTS D"! Check Espn nfl for the stats. #3 in points allowed, #1 against the pass, #7 against the run, #1 turnover ratio, and #2 total D. The Colts would have shut Jacksonville out, if not for one kickoff return. As far as David Carr beating the Colts last year, the Colts had no Bob Sanders or Dallas Clark. I beleive his record against the Colts is 1-9 all time. The Colts have sacked Carr 35 times in 10 games. Freeney and Mathis both have 8 each. If you have a chance to beat the Colts, it is with Vinny. If Carr startes, is say the score is 38-10 Colts. Remeber this is not St.Louis or Miami your playing this week! GO COLTS
Posted by: coltpower | Oct 24, 2007 5:51:33 PM
OK OK guys!!!I have read it all,the panthers cant do this, well let me tell u none beleivers,it may take some teams a while to get rolling,O OR D.Now you have to look how long payton been running the o 4 the colts or the others on d,now have they switch o cord,or d cord,I dont think so,now thats why I say it may look if the cats not ready earlier but they sure look if they r stepping it up to me.So dont be saying what the colts r ranked around the NFL,thats just numbers and stats, that dont mean anything if you dont produce that comes sunday.LETS GO CATS 28-24 BABY!!!!!!!!!
