Short practice, then 3 days off
With the bye weekend approaching, the Panthers’ practice today was shorter than the usual Thursday workout. But in a different situation, it would have been nonexistent.
"This one’s always been on the books to be a little short so the guys can get out of town," coach John Fox said as he walked off the fields behind Bank of America Stadium. "But we’ve got young players; two new quarterbacks. If we were a solely veteran team, we might have had another day off.
"In our current state, we needed a little bit of work, not for everybody, but for some of the guys."
That would include new quarterback Vinny Testaverde, who said Wednesday that he was still in the process of learning Carolina’s playbook.
This week "just gave us a couple more practices to bring those guys along," Fox said.
Now many of the players and coaches will scatter across the country for a much-needed break from the game. They’ll reconvene Monday to concentrate on the upcoming game with Indianapolis.
By the way, I’m impressed by friend and colleague Tom Sorensen’s 24 blogs in 24 hours. Ask anyone who blogs; he set himself an almost impossible task and still kept his sense of humor throughout.

This is the best blog I have ever seen. Good job Pat, way to steal that one off the wire or the Panthers home page. Good insider information, and worth talking about.

SC, before you unveil your clever sarcasm, be clever enough to figure out who wrote it...
Posted by: stan olson | Oct 18, 2007 7:40:04 PM
Yeah, Stan...how DARE you report factual information?
Posted by: Michael Procton | Oct 18, 2007 7:49:53 PM
Michael, I guess i'll never learn...

I can't believe we have such bush league reporters around here. You shouldn't even have a job with the High Point Enter(SUR)prise!

Now all the Panthers need to do is rest up and gear up for a 8 win plus after bye. That would leave us 8-2....12-4 that puts us. But...But like OL Mike said training camp being hot and demanding and physical. Thats what these guys have to remember here on out. Its going to be demanding and physical from here, serious business, boot camp bunker mentality.. What they came to training for and what they went through as a team. They had a wonderful camp in SC, probably one of the near best in past times. It was live. Stay together Panthers, this season resembles the 03 season feeling and schedule...So we shall see. Go Panthers!!!

I like the post panther fan. Not sure what all of it meant, but I love the optomistic attitude. Thing is, Vinny has to start for the Panthers to win against the Colts. It almost sounded like Stan Olson was trying to hint the the team was getting him prepared for just that. Don't forget, these guys can't report everything they see in practice, even though they are allowed to attend. BTW, you might have noticed that bit of information too, SC, if you weren't so busy being mundanely insulting.... though you did make me laugh with your blunder that displays an obvious lack of intelligence.

Who was the last team the Colts lost to?? The Houston Texans with David Carr as the starting quarterback.

I can't wait to see Beason teamed with Morgan. I think it will have the same effect as when Witherspoon was here. Beason will be all over the field. Hell, it may even free up that other linebacker... uh... oh yeah Davis is his name, to make some plays. He is having way too quiet of a year for a linebacker. I have seen him make some great plays, especially using his speed, but I would like to see our LBs become a feared trio, making anyone think about it before coming into their space. Beason has done a fantastic job in the middle, and putting Morgan on the outside might show that he has lost a step. Beason understands both positions, and could slide back to the middle at any time. Let Morgan play as long as he can. The only way we will beat the Colts is to stop the run and put a lot of pressure on Manning. Let him throw for 350, just not score 35 points, and hit him hard and often. I want to see our linebackers become a unit, red-eyed crazy men who savor hitting and get each other pumped up. With Morgan back, Beason will be all over the field, and can be unleashed to attack the QB, and maybe Davis can come back to life and get aggressive again. By the way, a very interesting article on espn.com about the stats of 4-3 versus 3-4 against pass happy teams. Everyone thinks this team has no chance, but any team is only one or two players away from hitting that next level, and sometimes it is the players you have had but just in a different mix. I think if Morgan can come back and with what Beason has learned, you will see a marked improvement in our overall defense. And, despite all the negative press, Cooper and Harris are getting better every game. Harris is a big hitter, and I think that he also would dramatically benefit from Morgan's return.

the panthers should just send mad pressure on manning the whole game. hey if any thing we're great at is it's putting players out for the season or multiple games. make indy's (if they) win cost them. go panthers

I agree. We may lead the league in hurting people. I guess I am too Butkus to see that as a bad thing. It is a violent game, and if your body won't hold up, you shouldn't be in it. An off the subject question, does anyone out there remember the arrow haircut of Ernie Holmes of the champion Steelers?

when the panthers lost to the lowly texans the way that they did .I lost all hope for this team...they made the Texans look more like the patriots.

Stan, I don't give a crap who wrote the damn thing, but the fact that you claim that retarted blog speaks volumes about yourself. And take that clever sarcasm wherever you want to. I am so tired of hearing from the same people, i.e. Procton, who are wannabe journalists who have no passion for our team. It's about time that some people who really care about this football team start to call people like that out!
Posted by: SC | Oct 19, 2007 11:17:35 PM
go root for the texans then wayne.

we can beat indy!run the ball down there their throats all day and wear out that fake-ass defense they have.they are undersized and they have no two d-backs who can cover smitty even together!!Richard Marshall will be huge in this game.i just wish we had fans who knew how to get loud at home.

Hey SC. Here's a journalistic note: Go fuck yourself. What right do you have to challenge the level of my passion for this team, which I have followed since its inception? I will guarantee that I have watched, been to, discussed, and thought about more games than you have so much as been aware of. I have forgotten more about the Panthers than you have ever known. I apologize that you are upset by the fact that I like to have a factual basis behind my thoughts and opinions. If you prefer to go through life as an uninformed slob, feel free to do so, however, that's not MY choice.

indys going to be tough. remember last years afc championship game. if manning wants it he can get it.

But we also have to remember the game in '03 when we went to Indy and shocked the Colts! This team needs to rally around all the positive signs we've shown thus far and capitalize on that momentum. The weak division will give us some extra time to work out our kinks, but at some point, we'll need to stand on what we've got, realize "It is what it is," and to strap on our belts and go to work. This team has had some time to rest and get their heads right, and I hope to see them get their spirit unified in time to make this season special like that '03 one was.
Go Cats!

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME COMMERCIALS? There will be at least 100 commercials before and during the game on Sunday. I keep waiting on the Richardsons to put advertisements on the bathroom urinals. This urinal sponsored by Happy Pee Pee, the Pee Pee company of the carolina panthers.
Let's get ready for some easy listening music, maybe even some more beach music.
I think I will bring ear plugs.
