Beuerlein comment causes a stir

Former Panthers quarterback Steve Beuerlein caused a stir with a comment he made during the CBS broadcast of Sunday's game between the Titans and Bengals. Beuerlein thought a commercial break was going on, but his comment, in which he called Titans running back LenDale White a "USC thug," made it on the air. Here's a link to the story:

Beuerlein comment

In other news, Jeremy Bridges was found guilty of assault after pointing a gun at a strip club employee.

I think its quite evident now why so many athletes do and should carry a weapon.

While I'm not saying that what White did wasn't thuggish and pretty dumb (it was), there is no way to say that Beuerlein's comment was directed specifically at him. He didn't say "LenDale White's a USC thug, man", so it's a bit of a stretch to say that he "called Titans running back LenDale White a 'USC thug'". What you wrote was very misleading- choose your words with a little more care.

I agree KCPanther. As usual the media types are trying to mislead us in order to stir up controversy. It shouldn't even be an issue. Two buddies from rival schools joking around.

Lendale White pushes the defender, after the play is over and gets flagged for unnecessary roughness. White attended USC and was acting like a 'thug', tell me, who else could Beurlein have been refering to?

Posted by: mattdaddy | Nov 27, 2007 2:10:35 PM

He talkin bout Omar, mattdaddy. Ain't that right Kima?

Posted by: Bubbles | Nov 27, 2007 2:21:21 PM

Actually, Pat did get it wrong. Beuerlein's comment was "USC thugs, man", so it wasn't directed at a single person. Seems like he was making a large, grandiose comment as a side joke in an off-air conversation.

If you read the article and hear the explanation, it seems completely plausible he was having a rivalry conversation with the play-by-play guy, Beuerlein being a Notre Dame guy and the other guy in the USC camp and those two teams developing a rivalry the past couple of seasons.

If you believe Beuerlein didn't think he was on air at the time, then it's safe to assume he wasn't even looking at the monitor to know LenDale White was being shown on the air at the time.

Lendale White is a USC THUG.--- I said it, BIG DEAL

Posted by: steve Beurlein | Nov 27, 2007 3:02:49 PM

something had to prop the conversation though, when he saw what Lendale White did on the field (getting flagged) its safe to say that he used Whites actions to further his argument that USC has some 'thugs.' It makes no sense for Beurlein to watch what White did, go off on a tangent about USC thugs, but not include White in his generalization.

Beuerlein went to Notre Dame, he considers everyone from USC a thug

Posted by: Al | Nov 27, 2007 3:17:46 PM

I think the Beuerlein excuse for what happened makes perfect sense - announcers and former athletes ribbing and joking with each other. No big deal. This one got on the air. Why is everyone SOOOOOO sensitive? Why are we even discussing this junk? We're such babies.

Whether Steve's comment was directed at LenDale or not, it was no more than a harmless joke toward USC players. Everybody who watches college football understands that kind of (very mild) trash-talk, and goodness knows there's far worse said on AM radio every day.

Beuerlein is a quality guy and great ambassador for the game. Let's just let the issue die and move on.

I agree it was a harmless joke and no one should make a big deal about it, however, thats what alot of people thought about Imus too.

Do not sell your tickets to cowboy fans. The team is embarrassing enough. If you do not want to attend please stay home before you sell your tickets to the enemy.

BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH, So what if Lendale White pushed a guy after the play and B-line said he was acting like a Thug. It's not the worst thing to ever have been said in a broadcast booth.Youd act like he called him a racial slur or something.Pat YustillSuckUs you overpaid Blowing things out of context Snitch.Hey Pat think Carr's a bust yet?lmao.........

I can't believe how sensitive we all are becoming. Oh My God, he said he was a Thug!? Fire Him! The man was just kidding, grow some skin people. He would have said the same thing about Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart or Carson Palmer...let it rest people...

Wow. What a boring story. How about talking to Jerry Richardson and asking him what he thinks of the fans' reactions, the team, and plans for next year. Ask him if he is even aware that most fans think the atmosphere in the stadium sucks, even when it is full. Ask him if the fact that he had a sports glove on each hand at the game Sunday that matched his suit is in any way an endorsement of David Carr. Ask him if he still thinks he will deliver a Super Bowl trophy in the first ten years (trick question to see if he is still with us). Ask him where he thinks the priority for next year's drafts are. Ask him why you can't get a $#@%%$$#@##ing beer sold by a vendor in the aisle any more.

I'd still take Beuerlein over Carr any day!

I am a thug man.....lol

Lendale White is not reason why Carolina fell off!

Screw it, let the Cowboy fans go to the game. Who cares about wasting an afternoon for a team that clearly doesn't care and a coaching staff that won't adapt its gameplan to try to win? I hope the place gets packed full of drunk Dallas fans. That's what happens when you play with no heart at home for more than a year.

Posted by: Tony Romo | Nov 27, 2007 8:38:26 PM

The Dallas fans make more noise at Billion Ads Stadium than the Panther fans every year. Can you imagine what it will be like on the Saturday night when them cowboys come to our stadium and take over?

Did anyone but me hear the advertisement for 1110 WBT Radio between 1st and 2nd down plays Sunday? I am not making this up, the game day experience at Unfun Bank of High Fees Stadium makes me sick. I am ready to sell out and subscribe to sunday ticket and stay home next year.

Let's not compare this to Imus... a has-been doing anything to get some ratings and hang on to his career. Ironically, he lost it in the effort and the "rev." Al Exploited to boost his! LMAO!!! But there is no comparison here... unless Kweisi Mfume tries to use the incident to revive his stature. :)

Stan and Pat. Are you two allowed to request interviews with any of the Panther management?

Posted by: kevin | Nov 27, 2007 9:38:17 PM

Is there anyway that a coaching change would happen before season end.

If there is, and we fired Hunley, Fox, Davidson, Turd-o-vic, the unspecial teams coach (if anyone knows who he is). Usually with this many changes it demonstrates a lack of ability in the President (Markie Richardson).

Here is a plan get Markie and all of the above mentioned out of decision making. Hire a President and General Manager with more experience than being the owner's son. Cut all of the dead weight, Morgan, Foster, Colbert. (Why did we cut Ty Biddle when he was the only person that had a good preseason)?

We are a joke from President to Special Teams coach.
