It might be time to recheck QB list
A few weeks back, the Panthers had a quarterback controversy. Now, they’ve got a full-fledged quarterback crisis. Vinny Testaverde was listed as the third quarterback in Sunday’s loss to Tennessee, but he didn’t even put on a uniform and stood on the sidelines. There’s no telling if Testaverde’s Achilles tendinitis will allow him back in the lineup for any extended time and he’ll turn 44 in less than two weeks.
David Carr got the start Sunday and had a dismal day. The Panthers might not have any choice other than to stick with Carr because of Testaverde’s condition. But you’ve got to wonder if the Panthers have any confidence left in Carr after a day in which he threw for 107 yards and was sacked seven times. You also have to wonder if Carr has any confidence left.
The other extremely remote alternative is undrafted rookie Matt Moore. If you saw his final pass after he relieved Carr late in the game, you’ll know why the Panthers can’t turn to Moore.
We might be getting way ahead of the game here, but let’s say Testaverde can’t return or can’t hold up for any extended period and the Panthers have serious doubts about Carr’s ability to turn things around. This is all hypothetical, but maybe the Panthers need to bring another quarterback into the mix.
This isn’t the ideal time of year to be looking for a guy off the street (the trading deadline has passed), but it could come to that. Below is a list of every quarterback still registered as active with the NFL Players Association (although guys like Drew Bledsoe and Tommy Maddox may have decided to retire, but haven’t done the paperwork). Some of the other guys probably don’t even merit consideration by NFL teams.
But there’s still a very large haystack, and there just might be a needle on this list:
Jared Allen

Why go to all this trouble to fix a sinking ship?
Just let it sink.
This team is going nowhere. Might as well get a nice draft pick that Richardson can waste on a player he'll cut in three seasons.

Vinny Testaverde is hurt and nowhere near the answer for the future. David Carr is a disappoint and I was a fan for bringing him to Carolina. All of that equals Matt Moore starting for my beloved Carolina Panthers. I play by the rule of 3 so here are three reasons why Vinny shouldn't start, David shouldn't start and Matt should start.
Vinny Testaverde:
1. He is injured. I take a healthy human being over a hurt human being any day. Espcially at his age.
2. Age. Nothing else needs to be said about that.
3. He doesn't have the knowledge of the playbook as much as David or even Matt.
David Carr:
1. He plays with zero confidence
2. Obviously the sacks have been much to do with his inability to get rid of the ball
3. He doesn't have the respect from our main offensive threat
Matt Moore:
1. Has nothing to lose. Undrafted. Was in camp with Dallas, whose starting QB is who? and he was drafted when?
2. I would say Jeff Davidson has some hands on experience in an offense with a QB not taken so high in the draft
3. He gets rid of the ball. You talk about his interception as if he was brought in at the best of times for a rookie QB. At least he gets rid of the ball and you see that velocity?
QBs on the list I would not mind having a look at but not much more (Rule of 3):
Jared Zabransky
Omar Jacobs
Chris Leak
I'm tired of hearing coaches say that stats don't matter...::cough:: ::cough:: John Fox. What do players, fans and sports reportes worry about and talk about the most? STATS!!! That is why, if I may add, I feel Dwayne Jarrett should be getting much more playing time. He produces, he catches and holds onto the ball and he is a natural-born winner, football instinct. Also why Deangelo needs more carries. He produces. Carolina has nothing to lose but John Fox and Marty Hurney do. Start the future now to give fans something to wish upon and Mr. Richardson a reason to keep signing your paychecks into next year.

Trade for Chad Pennington, Then fire Foxy and Hurney. Mr. Richardson better wise up or this franchise is gonna be one of the worst. Just sit back and think---Has this team gotten better since 03'?
And yeah, DON'T BLOW A FORTUNE OF PEPPERS!

I'm sure none of those QB's can "understand the system" or some BS Foxy slings every week. Foxy plays the local yocal media like a fiddle, its a joke! They'd rip him a new one in a real pro sports town. He even got them to believe there would be major offensive changes with the new OC..."Zone blocking, Smith in motion, etc..." I'm a diehard, but this franchise is quickly becoming a joke, and the local media had been.

we do need another QB, but at the same time the line didn't help the guy. i like moore also. When is everyone going to catch on and just let it go and drop some players and get real. Fox, job is safe because of the QB situation. but really something has to give here. i see the panthers at 8-8 or even worse. saints are playing better tampa is also and we have the jags, the cowboys it's going to get really ugly

Peppers has not shown me anything. We need to draft a quarterback and play with what we have. This season is too far to bring someone new in. If you are going to do anything let Moore play and move on. Otherwise, it is not worth the time and effort bringing someone else in. Jake is hurt but hopefully will be fine next year. He was playing great and we were set to win our division.
Everyone thinks the Saints are the darlings of the NFC South, but a healthy panther team own the Saints. We should check out Moore and prepare for next season.
We need a corner, a quarterback, a good running back(1st round), offense linemen, and a defense end.

I belive we need a new manger, marty look terrilbe why did we even get rid of bill polan he's much better then Marty I hope the New England Pats or Colts assiants Manger will come and be are manger for all you know at least will draft better.

Explain again why they can't give Matt Moore a chance. Also, I see doug flutie on this list give me a break. What about drew henson, other than that I would like to see rohan davey get a shot, he's got a big arm but has very little experience. Kliff Kingsbury threw for some 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns at Texas tech every year.

Panthers season is still intact.....

Season is a lost cause. I'll still cheer hard as ever for our Panthers, but this season is shot. I say let Carr stay in there and get the stuffing beat out of him. He's worthless anyway, and as long as he doesn't get physically damaged he might as well start. No sense in ruining the rook's confidence over nothing.
This is a sad time for the franchise. We're nearly as pitiful and hopeless as right after the 1-15 season.
Posted by: realist | Nov 5, 2007 12:29:43 AM
John Fox and Mike Trgovac definitely need to go. As a diehard, my distaste first became rampant in the collossal failure in drafting Thomas Davis over Derrick Johnson in 2005. Thomas Davis, Keary Colbert, Drew Carter, Mike Rucker, Chris Gamble, David Carr all need to find new addresses for next season. None of them deserve to be on this team and we the fans don't deserve to see them underachieve. Dwayne Jarrett should be allowed to play. Maybe he would be by now if the Panthers hadn't canned Keyshawn after draft day. Peppers, as much as some want to dog him, never gets any help. The Panthers never should have gone after Kemoeteu (sp?). They should've allowed Carstens to continue starting following 2005. The Panthers NEVER blitz even though three of the top four teams in overall defense blitz over 30% of their plays (Ravens, Steelers, Pats).
I'm sorry to say, but it looks like Bill Cowher will be the coach soon enough, and he should be. I'm sure he'd show the Panthers how to play the 3-4 and I don't know, actually establish the run.
But regardless, the Panthers HAVE to start Matt Moore or just someone else off the street b/c David Carr is the WORST #1 pick of all-time, and it gets worse and worse with every Panthers snap

Add Chris Leak to the roster, make him the starting QB in 2 weeks, write off the rest of the season and get him prepared to be the QB of the future in his home town.
It's the easiest thing in the world.
Oh, trade peppers for draft picks, trade morgan for an O-line.
Posted by: jon | Nov 5, 2007 5:53:36 AM
No crack on Beason, because he's turned out to be a great rookie LB, but the Panthers were morons for passing on Brady Quinn when they had the chance. Yeah OK they couldn't have known that Delhomme was going to blow his elbow out, but realistically how many more years does he have left anyways? 2? 3? They should have drafted Quinn to get him into the system and then he'd be ready to go. Now we have no future at QB and no good prospects on the horizon either. And you are left with a list of washups (see above) and guys that wouldn't even QB my backyard two hand touch team. Good times in Pantherland.

1. David Carr was great at Fresno State. We thought Houston and their offensive line was his problem. It wasn't. It's time to yank him.
2. In 2003, a veteran, Rodney Peete, was playing badly. John Fox, on seeing something needed to be done, yanked him in favor of career journeyman backup and benchwarmer, Jake Delhomme. Yeah, Jake threw three picks that day in a quarter and a half, but his fire won the game. It is time for bold choices. It is time for Matt Moore.
3. Look, as fans we deserve to see exciting football. We still have a chance for the playoffs with solid, not brilliant QB play. Carr's done. He's worse than Harrington. He's gun shy; he plays scared. Sure Jake would occasionally throw a dying quail, or an overthrow, but his guts won the game. Carr's just plain scared. We don't need that.
Please John Fox, use what made you great, and have the guts to put in the untried. It's time. New Orleans is good again and Jeff Garcia in Tampa ain't going away. If we go down, then let's not go down like a flailing chicken. Let's go down fighting. Matt Moore gives us that fight and a fighting chance.

If the coaching staff scales down the playbook and works Moore at #1 we at least have a chance for a few more wins . Carr is not our QB. If they stay with him he will cost us the season and Fox and Hurney there jobs LETS WATCH AND SEE . We need some magic ! How about MAGICAL MATT MOORE has a nice ring yea THE MAGIC MAN

Why does Marty and John still work for me?
Posted by: Jerry Richardson | Nov 5, 2007 7:45:43 AM
AS A PSL OWNER AND VERY PROUD PANTHERS FAN I MUST SAY THAT IF THE PANTHERS START CARR I WILL NOT BE IN THE STANDS!!!!IT IS HARD ENOUGH TO WATCH ON TV AND I DO NOT FEEL LIKE PUKING IN THE STANDS. MR. RICHARDSON PLEASE HEAR MY PLEA...
Posted by: WOWO | Nov 5, 2007 7:52:45 AM
Given the choices we have if Vinny cant go we have to start Matt Moore. You can see it in Carrs eyes. HE'S DONE!!!!! He just doesn't grasp the concept of playing QB in the NFL. At least Moore had the team moving until that late throw. I can deal with a mistake made trying to win rather taking a sack because your too scared to throw the ball. Besides you can just see in the way the rest of the team plays when one of the other two guys is in they just have no cofindence in Carr and I can't blame them. Please coach Fox leave the Carr in the garage next week.

It's a sure sign that the season is lost, when people are are hanging their hopes on an undrafted rookie QB who didn't even go thru training camp with them. Bottom line - there are no valid QB choices - this is a pick your poison situation. Might as well go down with Moore anyway; couldn't be any worse than Carr.

im livid that we didnt get joey harrington... he is the better of the 2 QB's...
carr BLOWS... what a bust.. now his back is hurtin AGAIN.... after 7 cvsacks and 7+ takedowns after the throw.
Posted by: CARR SUCKS!!!! | Nov 5, 2007 8:52:49 AM
What about trying to get Jake Plummer I think he is a great QB Denver should have never gotten rid of him!!!
Posted by: M. Butler | Nov 5, 2007 9:02:29 AM
I said it before we signed Vinny....
Moore = Jake
Carr = Weinkie
Jake = Peete (well actually because of the Vinnie signing Vinny is more = to Peete)
What I don't get is why everyone is so incredibly afraid to go ahead with Moore. He's got fire, certainly proves he has the arm, seems to have the o-line's confidence if not patience at least, and this would be his chance to shine and prove what he can do. I feel safer with him in the pocket (did anyone notice there seemed to be a lack of panic on his part while the pocket was collapsing) than with Jake (happy feet) or Carr (hold the ball too long).
Moore seems to have good timing with the ball, the interception at the end of the game was a rookie mistake likely due to not knowing the routes as well as we'd all hope for or someone simply not running the route correctly (it's been known to happen).
Moore's got a good arm that can introduce the long range threat and oddly enough that could open up the running game even more. His abilities will allow for a more diverse play selection from the coaches if they'd ever decide to call anything other than a pass on 3rd and short or a run on 3rd and long (something I've never understood them doing).
I was hoping for Moore for several games now, and still hope we get to see him play witht he starters for a full game. I think many of you people that are soooo worrried about his undrafted status will be surprised.

RIGHT now I dare any of you to find me a wr that was open on any of those sacks, you can blaber on all you want including you PAT but I want ome freaking evidence.
I have an example, how about the drive where he was 5-5 and made some pretty sick throws and scored a TD, does anyone know why we scored????
A: He had freaking time TO THROW THE FOOTBALL, IS THAT CLEAR ENOUGH. I know its easy to blame the QB for everything that happens but did I see Marcus Vicks name on there Pat, What?????? Vick would have had pee running down his leg yesterday, give me a break.
Lets talk about the Titans trying to injure Carr on purpose yesterday, pretty lame and should be fined for those hits, do you agree Pat? O Matt Schaub, you know Carrs replacement heres his stats vs The Titans.....
5-9 for 23 yards, 2.6 yds att. Sacked 2, fumbled 1, AND THEY KNOCKED HIM OUT OF THE GAME.
Drew Brees READY, when he played the Saints with all hs weapons and OLINEMAN he mustard, 4 INTS! 0 TDs. Sacked 3 times.
Peyton Manning.....1 TD 1 INT, ummmm sounds familiar. And the great Peyton Manning and his Soldiers up front gave up 3 sacks.
David Gerrard sacked 3 times, lost and they even ran for near 200 yards in that game.
Should I even bring up what happened to Harrington?
Daunte Cullpepper......0 TD 1 INT, sacked 5 times.
Okay do you get what I am trying to tell you here, NO QB has played great against the Titans this year, one of the MAIN resons they are 6-2 this year is their Defense.
But hey our QB needs to go and we need Josh Hybl right? How about a new center, because holy crap was our center doing one great job yesterday on Haynesworth.
Someone find me a WR open on the sacks.
