It's heating up for Fox, Hurney

Observations from the Panthers’ loss to the Falcons on Sunday:

-- That hot seat we’ve all talked about that John Fox and Marty Hurney are on? It jumped up about 20 degrees Sunday. It doesn’t matter who your quarterback is or how many defenders teams are putting on Steve Smith. You have to be able to squeeze out a win at home – at least once a calendar year.

-- Also, as long as we’re talking Fox and Hurney, they’re a package deal. If one stays, they both stay. If one goes, the other goes.

-- Now, we see why the Panthers have been so hesitant to put rookie receiver Dwayne Jarrett on the field. Hope he takes a look at himself on film.

-- Interesting development when safety Deke Cooper went down with an injury in the third quarter. Instead of sending in veteran Marquand Manuel, who once flopped in a chance to claim a starting role, the Panthers turned to undrafted rookie Quinton Teal.

-- Mike Rucker had his first sack of the season. Seriously.

-- Apparently, Dan Henning didn’t get the patent rights on the draw play on third-and-long. Jeff Davidson and Hue Jackson sure seemed to like it.

-- Got to respect the heck out of Vinny Testaverde for getting out there and playing a gutsy game. But how long can this last? Watching Testaverde trot out to start a series brings back memories of Robert Parish at the end of his career.

-- It’s been well-documented that Julius Peppers isn’t having a good season as a pass rusher. But he’s not doing well as a run defender, either. Just about every time the Falcons had a third-and-short, they ran right at Peppers and it usually worked.

Maybe if we keep losing we can get rid of Fox. Did you hear everyone booing on all those third and long draws? Only a moron would make that call EVERY TIME. The defense expects it because Fox always calls it and therefore it NEVER works. Fire the idiot. Last year we blamed Henning, well now it's the exact same. Gotta be Fox.

Am I missing something about Jarrett? I saw him make an excellent catch and miss the mark on a few others. Did he play any worse than the self-proclaimed 2,000 yard this season receiver Steve Smith?

Pat or Stan....

I know people hate these type of questions...but I have a friend that works within the organization at a very low level position. The Richardsons would not know her if she knocked on thier door....

She has told me that there is talk that Smitty has made voiced his opinion waaaaay to loud and has even mentioned not finishing his career here.

Could this have any merit? And is he not locked up long term? His on the field actions make believe some truth could be found in this.

I really wish the local papers would do their part to turn up the heat on the coach and GM. How about asking some questions about the play calling? How about asking Fox if he thinks he'll be here next year? How about asking him if he WANTS to be here next year, because the way he's coaching games, it sure seems like he's itching to be fired.

Posted by: JanitorDan | Nov 11, 2007 5:48:48 PM

I like the idea about the paper turning up the heat on Fox, maybe they could help get him fired.

If they ask him about it though he'll probably just say "Well that's day to day!"

He's a dumb ass

Send 'em all packing... Smitty sucks and so does most of this team! It was a dull dragged out torture for me watching this game today. Send them all packing; GM, Coaches, Scouts and most of the players!!!

Pat,

Why are you calling out Jarrett? Drew Carter dropped just as many? It must be that fact that we do not expect anything from Carter. Plus Carter has four years in the system. Besides that it was a good blog.

Posted by: Steven | Nov 11, 2007 6:01:09 PM

Pat, sorry, but you're dead wrong about Jarrett. He looked okay today. Not great - but he cost us a whole lot less than Smith. And certainly no worse than Colbert has been. Not sure what you think you saw out there.

But there will still be CPI Security and that tasty, tasty Bojangles chicken. Who cares about the game, just so I get the chance to pay $250 for 2 seats and another $50 for $8 worth of food and drink. That's what I go there for. This is a team in crisis, with a leadership void from top to bottom. It is one of those every man for himself situations, where there seems to be no team, and everybody is playing for their next contract. Willy Beaman has just been signed.

Garbage. Pure coaching garbage.

Jerry, you've got my number man.

Posted by: Marty Schottenheimer | Nov 11, 2007 6:06:07 PM

Jumping up 20-degrees is an understatement--the man's in the fire right now. We'll see if he cooks himself, or if he can manage to find a bucket of water. Either way, it's Fox stew.

This team needs a change. A big one.

Posted by: Mav | Nov 11, 2007 6:09:19 PM

So tell us Coach Fox, do you like the fact that NFL balls have no white stripes like NCAA balls?

Posted by: Mick Mixon | Nov 11, 2007 6:10:25 PM

I agree on Jarrett. You guys seem to forget who you play is relative to your choices, and Jarrett is such a huge target that I would much rather have him out there than Colber or Carter. He made a couple of nice catches, and just didn't make a couple hot reads, so what. That comes with a first year player, and those are the things that would be fixed if he had gotten some playing time before today. Jarrett is a player, and will be dominant somewhere if not here. This conservatism is not only boring, it is an overly stubborn clinging to what worked once. I found a $20 bill on the sidewalk one day, but didn't spend the rest of my time walking around looking for money on the street. This game was ugly as a Duke homecoming queen.

I think we passed judgement on Henning to soon--Fox had been raiding the hen-house all along.
At least Henning could get the ball down the field once in a while.

After today i must break a promise to myself, I always said i would pull for a home team here in NC, but my heart is full of sorrow after witnessing the death of the Panthers. May they rest in peace. I have moved on.

Sincerely,

Fan in search of winning team.

JOHN FOX is horrible. He couldn't coach high school. Seriously this is painful to watch.

MARTY HURNEY is a absolute joke. I picture him similar to George Kastanza working for the Yankees. I'm pretty sure a monkey could do his job better.

DAN HENNING, I'd like to apologize for any heat you received while you were here. I now see it wasn't your fault.

JAKE HATERS, you should all stand up. Every one of you who said that David Carr should be our starter going into the season. Where are you MF's now?

The CAROLINA PANTHERS are heading into dark times if major changes aren't made soon. The team sucks and the fan experience is one of the worst in the league.

Posted by: Coaching Deprived | Nov 11, 2007 6:18:41 PM

O-fense is still not ready yet!,Some of the drops were important, but still, come on,NOTHING IS BIGGER THAN THE QB IUSSE,And let me say this,DO NOT PUT DAVID CARR BACK IN,THAT IS TOTAL ABUSE!,Your not going to win anyway,AT LEASE,With anyone else you get a chance,Its like you never showed up with him there playin,BUT....Somebody Tell me....,As terrible as this team is,WHY ARE WE STILL SECOND IN OUR DIVISION?

Posted by: #1 Fan | Nov 11, 2007 6:19:25 PM

I hate to see the loss of Fox after he's done so many good things for our team, but i think he needs to re-think his strategy. Do we want to manage the clock or win the game?

Posted by: panther_fem | Nov 11, 2007 6:20:04 PM

We are no doubt the worst team in the league. Every team in this league would beat us right now.

Why is the Charlotte Media scared to put heat on FOX or the Panthers Management? Step up and be real journalists!!! Put some heat on these idiots.

Posted by: Pack | Nov 11, 2007 6:22:04 PM

Pat/Stan:

For the 1000th time, what does Peppers weigh? -- can't be more than 240. If you and the rest of the press corps do not want to completely waste your time -- and by extension, ours -- that should be the ONLY question asked the the presser -- 10, 12 times in a row until Foxy walks out.

Denial of players limitations/injuries is the core problem with the Panthers, so this would NOT BE A STUNT, rather you'd be drilling down to a fundamental issue.

Either way, this is a 4-12 team that'll need to be blown up before the playoffs are an option again. Doubt that Jon-Jon, Marky and the Big Cat are down with that, so expect another season of denial next year.

They'll do it without any of my money.

Posted by: JAT | Nov 11, 2007 6:23:53 PM

But the Big Cat has 60% of Bojangles, and according to Forbes, his franchise is worth almost a billion dollars, so I don't think he gives a fat baby's pee pee if any of us show up again. Thanks to the Devil, Max Muhlman, we sold our souls just like they did when they built the Dean dome, with the whole PSL system. They used the people's money to enrich themselves. The value of the franchise has grown by a factor of ten, did ticket prices go down? No. Have they delivered a good product? Most years they have, but the home environment will always suck due to the way the stadium was funded. This was done because they found a way to never have to actually sell tickets, which keeps them from having to consistently win or even play an exciting game. The circle is completed by the fact that they get paid no matter whether we win or lose. They are either stockbrokers or bookies, it all comes out the same.

Posted by: Willy | Nov 11, 2007 6:31:36 PM

And without my money as well.

But Stan, like the some of the previous posters have suggested, you and Pat need to ask some of these hard-hitting questions. With the decline of the team over the past two years, and the questionable game preparation, someone in the organization needs to answer to the public.
If Fox wants to keep a tight lip on these questions, then someone should remind him that the only reason this organization exists is because of the fans.
The revenue that the organization takes in comes from the pockets of the fans--therefore the money that he is paid ultimately comes from the fans; the same ones that he refuses to acknowledge.

Posted by: hillbilly | Nov 11, 2007 6:35:19 PM

I left the team of my youth to be proud of a home team here in NC. --- Why torture myself? For loyalty? --- To who? --- When's the last time Richardson asked us PSL owners what we thought? --- He couldn't care less as long as he has our $$$. Does he want to win? of course, I'm sure he does. However, HOW ABOUT LETTING US KNOW YOU REALLY CARE MR RICHARDSON!!!! --- I'm not spending ANY more $$$ in your stadium this year or until there is a change!! And I am not the only one either!!!.. OPEN YOUR EYES JERRY!!! The emperor is NAKED!!!!!!!!!
