Man overboard

Coach John Fox just confirmed that the Panthers had only 10 players on the field for John Kasay’s first-quarter pooch punt that the Packers returned 94 yards for a touchdown.

Fox admitted that tight end Jeff King was supposed to be lined up on the left perimeter next to Justin Hartwig. But King somehow was not on the field.

Fox said it’s the responsibility of holder Jason Baker to count the players on the field. Fox said the Panthers should have either called a time out or let the play-clock expire and taken a delay-of-game penalty. – PAT YASINSKAS

When I read the title "Man Overboard" I got pretty excited. I hoped that it meant Fox was fired! Dang.

Regardless of how many men were on that field, that pooch kick should *never* be aimed down the middle of the field.

And that's because once you miss the FG, all of those 300+ lb linemen and your holder and kicker are now the punt return coverage team.

Which is nothing more than an open invitation for the return man to take a leisurely untouched stroll to the opposite end zone.

If you're gonna pooch it, pooch it OUT OF BOUNDS.

Green Bay already had a man back anticipating the pooch punt. Fox, Baker, Kasey, or anyone else should have picked up on that, that play is designed to catch the other team off guard because they would usually be lined up to block the kick and not have a man back, thus resulting in good field position, BUT there was no element of suprise, so if Fox was going to punt the ball all along he should have called the timeout or told the team to let the playclock expire, this was a terrible call on his part, but not the worst, rememeber last year at Minny??

Just shows how terrible Fox has become. He is nothing more than a glorified cheerleader.

This play should have never stood as a touchdown. Green Bay was holding John Kasay and this is against the rules. So with 10 Panthers on the field, Green Bay still had to cheat to pull that off, and the refs allowed this to happen.

Yes, last year when Gamble attempted a lateral pass after fielding the punt in Minnesota was worse. We had that game won if Gamble just fair-catches.

So I guess if you had been backed up another 5 yards, you could still count on the element of surprise? Fox is not one to point fingers, but maybe he really is feeling the heat when he throws his punter(one of only a couple special teamers performing) under the bus.

No Robert, if they were called for delay of game, they could have got there FG unit off the field and brought on the actual punt coverage unit. There was no element of suprise to begin with since GB already had a man back even though Carolina was in the Field Goal formation.

Why did they try to pooch punt anyway? Kasay can make a 52 yarder.

Nothing else left to say!!!!!!!

With out a doubt, this play call shows the lack of confidence the coaching staff has in the team. The fact that there were only 10 men on the field leaves the fan without any confidence in the coaching staff.

Shameful for mistakes like this to be made when we are strugling to overcome our QB situation.

The coaches as well as the team deserve a good tongue lashing.

At 52 yards, Green Bay would have left a guy back there no matter what-- field goal or punt. Plus the extra guy would have lined up on the side that eventually caved and allowed the touchdown to score. Remember the great block against Hartwig in front of the goal line? Jeff King would have lined up to his left! That would have helped.

i think that we had 2 kickers and 8 linemen(!!) on the field.. who all tried to tackle one of their fastest players.... very nice coaching!!!

Typical Fox, it is always someone else's fault, never his.
when you are 4-5 and in the hunt for the division lead, you dont pooch punt against the second best team in the NFC when you have a kicker who could nail the FG. At worst you miss, as it was we ended up giving them a TD, the lead, and knocking the steam out of a great drive and a good defensive effort.
Way to go Fox, hope you are renting in Charlotte on a short lease.

We should have ran our draw play. That would have surprised them.

Did anybody else notice that the coaches called a ton of passes even though Smith wasn't there? Why don't they call that many passes with Steve Smith? That's just idiotic. What a bunch of Morons we have running the team. I wish some reporter would ask Vinny T if these are the stupidest coaches that he's ever played for!

Posted by: Matt West | Nov 19, 2007 11:33:02 PM

DID HE JUST BLAME THE HOLDER FOR NOT HAVING 11 MEN ON THE FIELD??????

I AM A COACH AT A HIGH SCHOOL AND IT IS A TICK I HAVE AND MY! JOB TO COUNT HOW MANY GUYS ARE ON THE FIELD.

DONT BLAME THE PLAYERS, GET THEM READY COWHER......OOOOPS! I MEAN FOX.

Posted by: BigKahuna | Nov 20, 2007 12:11:48 AM

I don't think they will fire Fox this season! They will blame it on Jake and Dan getting hurt.

Fox, I know you want to pound the ball but it does hurt to try to PASS the football on 3rd and long. I dont know just a thought.

Cut Dan Morgan, and get a pounder of a RB in here. Foster is not the answer.

Posted by: William L. | Nov 20, 2007 2:14:09 AM

Hoover45: Stop whining about the hold on Kasay. It is only holding if it is obvious and effect the play. As Kasay had no chance what so ever to make the tackle it is not holding.

Besides, if a 260 pound TE is the key to stop a punt return, the coaching is the serious problem.

The reason we lost this game is that the Packers have better talent than we have. This is the case with most teams we play. Poor drafting is the problem.

Posted by: Wayne | Nov 20, 2007 7:41:26 AM

I'd say that if we had jake and Favre was hurt, we would have won that game. Talent and drafting aside, any team who loses a starting qb with Jakes talent and abilities is going to suffer, the same with Lord Favre, without him the Pack are a .500 team at best.

Posted by: Mattdaddy | Nov 20, 2007 7:59:12 AM

how about giving robinson a try at the slot. he has some speed, researched his catches he has hands. also look at steve smith. you never know. could be what we are mission right under our nose.

Posted by: panta4life | Nov 20, 2007 8:05:26 AM

Many times a team will have a return man near or at the end zone on long field goal attempts. A missed field goal can either be downed in the end or returned. If the attempted field goal is not fielded it comes back to the spot of the attempt. That is why you rarely see teams attempt a return. In this situation it did not matter becuase it turned into a punt rather than field goal. But for FOX to blame the return on Jeff King is ridiculous. It was a silly call, plain and simple.

Posted by: Carl Leazer | Nov 20, 2007 8:38:30 AM

I think Fox blamed Jason Baker more than King, Baker is the veteran who should have noticed they were a man short, but nonetheless, it was a stupid call, I mean, Kasay can make a 52yd field goal
