Observations after Sunday's victory ...
I wrote a story for Sunday’s paper where we ran charts of the five best and five worst personnel moves by John Fox and Marty Hurney. Many of you e-mailed me your own suggestions of other items that should have been on the list (one guy had 15 new suggestions). Thank you. Just about every suggestion was excellent and deserved consideration. Unfortunately, in a newspaper, there are space limitations and I had to stop my list of moves that didn’t work, which easily could have grown to at least 10. In fairness to Fox and Hurney, I could have increased their list of five moves that worked to at least 10 if I had the space.
Speaking of Fox and Hurney personnel moves and the 2005 draft that got some space in the worst moves section, here’s a little update. Defensive end Jovan Haye, a seventh-round pick in that draft, was good enough to make the Panthers for a very brief time, but couldn’t stay on the roster. Did you see what he did for Tampa Bay on Sunday? Haye recovered a fumble to set up the game-winning score. He also made a sack on the game’s final play. Maybe Haye should have been kept by the Panthers. He’d probably be playing ahead of Stanley McClover as the third end and might be in position to take over a starting job next year if Mike Rucker retires after this season.
I sincerely believe John Fox wasn’t knocking a player, because he doesn’t do that. But it was kind of funny when he said, "Even Marquand Manuel made a play" when he discussed the interception by the seldom-used safety.
Fox didn’t dance around when asked the logic behind the decision to make undrafted rookie Matt Moore the No.. 2 quarterback and drop David Carr to No.. 3. Fox said Moore is a promising young player who the team wants to take a look at sometime. Then, with candor, Fox said the Panthers had struggled offensively when Carr played.

What Fox said about Carr was ALMOST better than the win...when he gets that specific about a guy's performance basically sucking, that can only mean the guy is gone (I HOPE!)

I really think Fox/Hurney do deserve alot of credit for drafting Marshall and Beason and i think its too early to make any judgements on Kalil and Jarret and C. Johnson.

Isn't there a "Lemon Law" that protects people who have been stuck with a lousy "Carr"?

It is so true that Carr has had a lousy season. But I think its more of the coaching staff's fault than Carr's. The front office and the coaching staff did not do their homework before signing him. I am ready put this front office and coaching staff under the bus, time to put out the trash....

I think Carr would have been a great quarterback...in a year or two. The reason the move was hailed was that Carr had great potential if he could stay out of the limelight for a year or two and work out some of the kinks from his time in Houston. Obviously, that didn't happen.

For me, as stupid but honest as this may sound, it is Carr himself who makes him an unsympathetic character. He does not look like a grown-up, doens't talk like a grown-up, and certainly doesn't meet the vision most people have of that NFL quarterback who is the leader of a team. His lame attempts at humor (I thought they were shouting that they wanted more points when the fans were screaming for Moore to be put in against NO)and his new, Los Angeles hairdo, soul patch and mall rat clothing all provide the contrasts to Jake, Tom Brady, Brett Favre etc. If those of us who see him at press conferences feel like he is a goofball, it is easy to imagine his teamates feeling the same way. Then, the big statement he felt he needed to clarify that his gloves would always match the uniform of the game made me, and I am not the only person, just scratch my head and go "Oh no". The fact that this even occurred to him made me embarrassed to have him quarterback my team. The impression I get is that he wanted to simply get a big check, hopefully never play except in mop up with a big lead, and enjoy his time ala Wienke as a highly paid, seldom used backup. In my opinion, however humble, Fox should have tried Carr, then yanked him and gone with Moore with Carr still as the backup. All bringing Vinny in will do is let us win the SF game, and maybe one more. It has no investment in the future. I am sure Carr is a nice guy, but he isn't the version of the leader I want guiding my NFL team.

It would have been wise to put Moore in with 3 minutes left ... get him some experience which will pay off as we finish this season with our 4 game win streak ...GoPants !!!

One thing is certain, given the caliber of the teams we finish the last four games with, Moore, if he is listed as the number 2 QB, will get some substantial playing time. I am afraid old immobile Vinny is going to get crunched. I just hope he doesn't get permanently injured. It is the kind of dread I felt when Ali fought Holmes - you just wanted Ali to make it out of the ring alive.

DAVID CARR = 2008 BURGER KING MVP

I think the person who said Carr believed he was coming to a team to make a big paycheck and do nothing was dead right. Carr knows he has problems. Another couple of years and a few more millions; a locked and loaded NFL pension; buys a few Tofu franchises; and he's home free.
Carr is a wholesale embarressment to the Club and should be banned from media interviews. He acts like a blend between Cheech Marin and the scruffy friend of Scooby Do. Did none of the Panthers Mgmt talk to this kid before they hired him? Didin't they think ifodd that he called Fox..:Coach Dude" ? Somebody really dropped the old ball on this hire

News FLASH! January, 2009....David Carr signs on as Broadcast Announcer...Arena Football LA Avengers....in his first broadcast against Philadelphia, LA goes up 21-0 against Philly in the 1st Quarter...the home town fans start chanting "MORE! MORE!"...Carr Jumps to his feet "Dude fans...I've heard this somewhere before. They want me to play! I'm going down to suit up! I quit this announcer gig!"
And there ya have it folks.....wont we proud that we can say "When he was a Panther, we remember when......"

BOB you are seriously making me crack up! Too funny! Willy, you are dead right.
Posted by: DD | Dec 3, 2007 7:37:13 PM
Vinny doesn't have much left in him so why would anybody be worry that he might substained a season-ending injury. Yeah I know it would be so terrible if he had to cut his career short. Vinny is the only QB that has chemistry with the wide recievers. Carr's proved that he's ready to be the next Ryan Leaf and we barely know anything about Moore, so why would you just throw Moore in and say AHH what the hell. Were not out of the playoff race yet.

Funny how one minute this hack is saying he can't report everything because of space limitations and then went on to report a long winded rant! ALWAYS HAS SOMETHING NEGATIVE TO SAY.... HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!!!!! The Panthers could be undefeated this season and Yainskalukioski will still be finding a reason to fire Fox and hire Cowher!

My goodness, you are either the most mentally challenged individual on the face of this earth, or you're just blindly shoveling your vindictive "crap" all over your own feet.
Or, perhaps both.
Patty may not be the best reporter out there, but at least he does "think" before he writes. So before you go labeling someone a hack, at least get your facts right.
The article in question was written for the "printed" copy of the paper, and was later posted on-line just as it appeared in ink.
So the only hack you're seeing is yourself. Why don't you crawl back to your bedroom and hack-off some more.

Pat, you gave perfect reasons for why newspaper stinks. Space constraints. You can share with your marketing people that that's why I won't buy a subscription. I get more from online for free than I ever would from that silly paper for .50

Yeah, Andy...most papers come with an infinite number of pages. If you're not satisfied with the length of the paper, you just turn the last page and a new one appears. If you don't want to subscribe or buy it, then don't. But we don't need your bitching.
