Panthers lose Grigsby
The Panthers lost practice squad defensive end Otis Grigsby on Thursday when the Minnesota Vikings signed him to their regular roster. The Panthers signed defensive end Willie Evans to fill the vacancy on the practice squad. -- PAT YASINSKAS

Why do the Panthers have good players like Grigsby on the practice squad when they have players like Colbert and Carr wasting good roster spots? Are Hurney and Fox that inept?

To save face. If they could demote these guys and reduce their pay, they would in a heartbeat. But, to push them down to the practice squad given the decisions made to pay them what they pay them is an admission of ineptitude.

What happened to Dave Ball? Did he end up catching on somewhere?
Posted by: KCPanther | Dec 6, 2007 5:21:08 PM
Too bad we lost Grigsby, he looked pretty good in preseason but there DOES seem to be a history of players leaving the Panthers then finding glory on other rosters. I really can't understand why. I love living in Carolina and Its a hell of alot better than some other places (oh, like Detroit for instance) Maybe it's the summer heat that runs em off ?
Maybe the problem is the Panthers arent very good at evaluating talent ?

Dave Ball is still on the street, and hasn't even gotten a tryout since the season started that I have seen.
And oh, yeah...gotta love all those unnamed players going to glory. Grigsby got his shot on the active roster and did NOTHING on Sundays. Where is that the front office's fault? Most anybody can look great in the preseason against the other team's 3rd string tackles.

hummm I liked Grigsby As well...and he looked good I think it was stupid! to put him on practice squad...as well But I will admit when he did dress once or twice he didn't do much....but with that said Kemo Hasn't done anything in 2 years! yet they start him...I hope Grigsby!! DOES GREAT!! which will really show J.R. how STUPID! Hurney is.

Look what the Panther "also-ran" Javon Haye is doing in rival Tampa this season for even more proof of the Hurney/Fox ineptitude!!!!!!

All great comments. I have to agree with all of it! Let me add this though... sometimes players are motivated by rejection! Furthermore, some players fit better in other places, either because of what is going on at those other places or what is going on in their personal lives. I was pulling for Grigsby too after all the Observor hype, coupled with the great performance during the preaseason, but this was not Grigsby's time or place to shine.

I still have to wonder if he would have developed into a better player if he stuck around here... but if Fox kept him on the shelf to develop him than you guys still would have been criticizing him.

The situations of Grigsby and Kemoeatu are TOTALLY different. One is signed to a major contract which would cost us quite a bit were we to cut him. One was signed to a minimum contract which led to a very minimal cap hit when he was cut.
As for Haye, the Bucs simply got lucky. They tried him at DT (a position at which he'd never played), and it worked out well. Wow!
For as much bitching as you people do about guys becoming superstars the moment they get cut by the Panthers (must be names like Chris Horn, Taye Biddle, Chad Lavalais, Kenyatta Walker, and Justin Zwick), you fail to mention the fact that the team starts 9 players whom they neither drafted nor signed out of college. And that's not even mentioning our kicker, punter, or long-snapper, all of whom are among the most consistent players on the team. If finding almost half of your starters and most of your specialists through trade or free agency isn't doing a good job of evaluating talent, I don't know what would be.

G'day guys,
Just a question from an Aussie fan. Is there anybody in the team that is a worse tackler in open field then Gamble. All I see in the highlights is this bloke getting stiff armed by guys that my Grandmother could get through. Anyways Panther fan through and through and I cant wait for Jake to be ready to go. I love him.
Cheers
Craig

Chris Gamble is probably the best tackler on the team other than Beason, Davis, Marshall and Harris and maybe Lucas. I'm not counting total tackles, but just based on who wraps up when given the opportunity to make a play. Sure he got blown up by James, but for the most part Gamble is a solid tackler and as far as this season goes, the best coverage guy on the team

Could m stand for mom, like Chris Gamble's mom. You have got to be kidding me. Gamble is the best tackler on the defense other than the other 10 players. When I watch the NFL network I have to change the channel when they show Gamble getting punk'd by Chad Johnson on 4th and 29 when all he had to do was stick his fricking arm out and knock the ball down. Least we bring up Minnesota. Gamble is one the reasons this defense has plummeted to one of the worst in the NFL.

Chris Gamble has the fewest number of tackles of any starter in the Panther secondary, and 18 fewer than Richard Marshall (who does get to make some on special teams). Marshall is clearly a superior player to Gamble - and they should keep Marshall as the corner, and move Gamble to nickel and special teams. In short, demote him. I could certainly be wrong, but I simply remember more missed or half-hearted, Deon Sanders swinging gate arm tackle attempts by Gamble than I do seeing him wrap up. As for evaluating talent, the issue is not just with who we let go but who we keep and who we acquire and simply sit. All in, success stories of who we let go pretty much match success stories of who we brought in, but couple that with the drafts, the people we brought in that are busts and the confidence in the overall evaluation of personnel is shaken by a lot of fans.

How many teams throw towards Gamble? The the corners usually tackle the receivers that they cover. Gamble hasn't had the chance to make many tackles b/c teams arent throwing his way, they are picking on Lucas. If anyone should be demoted to nickel it is Lucas

Hey everyone
Thought you would get a kick out of this. Seems Michel Procton can dish the insults on here, but when he gets a taste of his own medicine he cries like the little baby he is and whines to the admins and gets posts deleted.
How PATHETICALLY SAD is it that he can insult people, call them names, but when people PROVE him wrong and call him a name he whines like a 5 year old?
Procton is PATHETIC PERIOD@!

Well, the fun of this is we all get to play coach and GM for a bit. Harris is quietly having an exceptional season, as far as number of tackles goes. Regarding Gamble, I am speaking of those opportunities he also has to make tackles on running plays.
Posted by: Willy | Dec 7, 2007 10:12:35 AM
Procton has a right to his opinion as much as anyone else. He is just immature and insecure, but occassionally makes a good point. It would help if he wouldn't call people stupid and dumbass just because they state something (not even disagreeing with him) that he disagrees with. He does have a little bit of that Unabomber edginess though, like he would send you a letter made of cutout letters from different magazines. He clearly supports Fox and the current team though, and there is nothing wrong with that. Perhaps you should all meet in the park and hug it out.

Thanks, Willy...to be frank, though, I don't really care about some anonymous person who doesn't like me who has no agenda beyond trying to insult me. I've yet to see any relevant or intelligent football commentary from anyone with the name "Procton is...", and I don't expect it. I'll keep bringing my knowledge and intelligence, and if people make dumb comments, I'll rip them for it. This clown still refuses to acknowledge that I was right in my point that David Carr (or any 3rd QB, for that matter) is--the vast majority of the time--an inactive player as the 3rd QB.

Actually Procton in this instance seems to be looking at things a bit more logically and a balanced way than most.
Fox/Hurney have taken the Panthers to the Superbowl and 2 NFC Championship games, which is better than Capers or Seifert. They perhaps should therefore have 1 last chance next season.
The greatest example of fans irrationality was their reaction to Jake Delhomme over the last year. Here's a guy who took us to the Superbowl and the NFC championship game and people wanted him out for Weinke and Carr!!
Just look what those guys did when they came in. We have obviously missed JD since he's been out.
QB wise next i'd have Jake with Vinny as back up/mentor to BB/MM, Basanez as 3rd string and Moore on the practice squad.
Draft an OL in the 1st round, that has been a weakness for several years now. And for goodness sake get a decent second WR and a power too through free agency.

I think the fact still remains that an inactive qb is different from any other inactive position. The qb can still enter the game, if the two active qb's get hurt. Also, the inactive qb can enter the game even in the active qb's are not hurt, but by rule, those qb's who were active cannot re-enter the game. I'm not saying I am correct, but thats how I understand that rule.

Does anyone think the Panthers have any chance at all of beating Jacksonville?
Posted by: Willy | Dec 7, 2007 11:35:36 AM
The panthers were not the only team to get rid of Jevon Haye it happens all the time

why'd my comment get deleted? i'm confused...

Know what my problem is with Procton? When he DISAGREES with someone he talks down to them and insults them. When he is proven WRONG, like his comments on the #3 QB, he runs and goes to another post and refuses to act mature and admit he is wrong.
I agree with Willy, he has the right to his OPINION, but his rights END when he insults other people, tells them they are wrong, and then when shown he is wrong refuses to admit it.
Grow up Procton and be man or boy enough to admit when you are wrong.
