Fantastic Super Bowl ushers in 'offseason'

Coming off of a week's vacation, I've still got visions of that amazing Super Bowl dancing in my head. Eli's fourth-quarter escape from overwhelming pressure and completion to David Tyree has to be the single greatest play in Super Bowl history, given time and circumstance.

The game is up there as well. Even when the Panthers played in the big one, after John Kasay's kickoff went out of bounds late, there was a sense of inevitabilty; you knew the Patriots would at least get into field goal range, and you knew they'd make the kick. There was some of that feeling after New England's last scoring drive, but the Giants wiped it all out, with that third-and-five play the most unbelievable aspect of the whole thing.

So if you thought the Patriots cheated in the past, you're happy. If you wanted football's Yankees to lose, you're happy. And if you just wanted the Super Bowl to be a great game, you're delighted.

And think about that brother thing; Peyton the game's MVP last year, followed by little bro Eli. Think that'll ever happen again? Only if those two do it. There's a third brother, Cooper, who was a wide receiver but saw his career end early because of back problems. Watch him pop up in commercials now; the bro without the ring.

Now it's on to 2008. Yeah, they'll play the Pro Bowl next week but the Panthers won't be there and who cares anyway? It's kind of like a preseason game at the wrong end of the year.

Up next? The Panthers--and our Charles Chandler--will descend on Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, where the top 300 or so college prospects will be poked and prodded for a few days as the whole league watches.

The trading period begins Feb. 29, as does the free agent signing period. That's when it should get interesting.

I agree Ray but we still need to get offense playmakers to I just hope the Panthers don't bring Rucker back he been great to us but his time as come and the Panthers have to o after young talented pass rusher if they want to be that team they were in 2003 and a superbowl champ this offseason will be very active and i have a feeling some of the Panthers old grt faithful will be somewhere else next season.

panthers should have not cut keyshawn.. without a capable replacement. i know it is beating a dead horse.. lets get williams a full work load this year.. see what we get.

Yeah...if only we had kept Keyshawn around. He did so well with all those other teams beating down his door to get him.

Procton you always think you have ALL the answers not to say we should have kept Keyshawn but he was not terrible. He cought at least 70 balls. I'm sure you will give me all his stats for the past 12 seasons. Procton have you ever thought of getting a LIFE??? You never agree with anyone or have anything positive to say. I used to like your post but they have become too ridiculous. Keyshawn was without question past his prime but he was ALSO without question BETTER than D. Carter, K. Colbert, and Dwayne "i dont know the playbook" Jarrett!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Procton, was there anyone on the Panther's roster who caught 70 passes? MESHON at the least could take the doubleteam away from Smith. I agree with wowo

Michael,

Get off the computer and do your homework.

If he was so good, why wasn't he on a roster? None of you have answered that great mystery.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Feb 4, 2008 8:59:45 PM

Michael he retired on his own. Get your facts straight

Posted by: Joel | Feb 4, 2008 9:08:23 PM

Uh-huh...I'm sure he left dozens of $5 mil/yr. deals on the table like we were going to have to pay him...he would have had to be worth every penny. He retired because nobody wanted him.

So, Michael, I suppose you know the behind-the-scenes workings of my career. I guess all the GMs in the league called you to inform you that no one wanted me. Man, you sure do know-it-all.

Posted by: Keyshawn | Feb 4, 2008 11:14:21 PM

man just about everyone who posted here is an idiot. the panthers could have had jerry rice(in his prime) play opposite of steve smith and this year would not have gone any better.

we didnt lose because steve smith was doubled teamed, we lost because jake delhomme got hurt, the offensive line pretty much sucks, and while williams looks promising i dont think he is a short yardage back.

for the panthers to go deep into the post season next year. we need to upgrade the o-line, get a big power back, and i think it is time we spent a high draft choice on a QB. if not this draft then the next one.

Procton, who was the Panthers #2 receiver this year. You can't tell me they should have not kept MESHON 1 more year. Less cap hit also, yes he was not an all star but definelty better than Carter, Colbert.

Dear Fox/Hurney/Richardson,

Please break open the piggy bank and lure Roy Williams here.. The dude is a class act and would be the yin for smitty's yang ... Whether he stays in Detroit or goes to another team, just about anywhere else that is a playoff team, he will have to be a #2 receiver, what makes the Panthers any different? Plus with a 2 receiver speedster set of Smitty/R. Williams, no more 8 men in the box for D. Will and Foster(that is, if we keep him).. With an upgraded o-line, Fox should use Foster like the Patriots use Kevin Faulk, screen passes, quick slants out of the backfield, etc. Foster can catch the ball and is much more a weapon to move the chains once he gets out of 1st gear and has good blocking upfield ....

Thanks!
