Pick a Patriots receiver you like ...
So will we be seeing the dismantling of the New England Patriots' vaunted wide receiving corps? And is that something that the Panthers might take advantage of?
New England has unrestricted free agents in wideouts Randy Moss, Jabar Gaffney and Troy Brown. But there's more to this story. Two more receivers are owed huge option bonuses and may not be signed because of that. Donte' Stallworth has an $8 million option bonus scheduled, while Kelley Washington has a $4 million lump sum coming. Both are due before the start of the NFL year in March, and if not paid, both would be UFAs. There's little question that the Pats won't give Stallworth all that money, and it's likely that Washington will walk as well.
Don't expect to see Moss stay free for long. If the Patriots don't keep him, he'll get a huge package from someone else, and he doesn't fit the character mold that Carolina likes. But what about all
those other guys?
Stallworth is the cream of the crop (other than Moss, obviously). Just 27, he is 6-feet and 200 pounds, and caught 46 balls for 697 yards and three scores in 2007. He's durable and very fast, and would take considerable pressure off of Carolina's Steve Smith. Gaffney is a 6-1, 200-pound complementary receiver who is just 27 and had 36 catches for 449 yards and five TDs a year ago. At 6-3 and 215 pounds, Washington is a big possession-type receiver who will turn 29 in August. Used sparingly by the Pats, his career high for catches was 31 in 2004 with Cincinnati. And forget about Brown; he's had a great career but will be 37 next season. He had 43 catches, but turned them into just 384 yards in '07.
It will be interesting to see how the Patriots - and the Panthers - revamp their receiving corps.

One guy who is off everyone's radar is Jerry Porter out of Oakland. Yes he is 29 but he is a solid numbr 2 WR. He wouldn't cost too much since either. His production was low in Oakland the past few years due to the fact he wasn't happy with the organization and they restricted his play. I think with a new start and Steve Smith to put the fire back in him, he could be exceptional in Carolina's system.

Stallworth would be a good choice, barring injuries, if THE PRICE IS RIGHT. Paying against the Saints, choosing him could be a gamble. Yes he knows them, but they also know him, just like Fox always says. BTW, I too beilieve after this Superbowl loss, the New England Paper Champions will fall apart. No steroids, no videotapes, and no officials cheating for them in a gamechanging way (other than favorable spotting of the ball) the world has seen they are not all they were hyped up to be. And now that their personnel is aware of it, they will be leaving for bigger contracts.

Oh yeah, I bet Brady is kicking himself now for taking that paycut to get more players in. Talk about someone who folds like a lawnchair under a little pressure! What a joke.

One guy that I would totally not mind coming in is Ronald Curry. He and Julius were teamates at UNC. I've heard the Raiders are one of the teams trying to trade for Deshaun. I think the Panthers need two big signings this offseason. One at running back, and the other at TE with Alge Crumpler. If we get those two, trade for Curry, and pick up someone like Kenny Phillips in the draft to cover our gaping hole at Safety, the Panthers will be contenders next season.

Sypris, you are an idiot. Brady folding like a lawnchair?? He's already won 3 super bowls and you say he can't handle pressure?? You, my friend, are a joke.

Kelley Washington is terrible. Has been since he came into the league. He played well this season when the Pats limited him to ST.

Lee, you yankee, go to your own website. Brady is a panzy, and the Giants proved it. And the 3 superbowls are a fluke. They didn't even deserve to reach the first one. Tuck rule!! Give me a break.

Sadly not an option, but who we really need from the Patriot is Welker. Someone to take those first down passes at 3rd and 7. He also show how to always get 2-3 extra yards by just falling forward. Do you guys think Robinsson could be taught to be this kind of receiver?
The bonus would be that if we had a receiver that isn't tripple covered (Smith) or very like to drop a ball thrown into his hands (Carter/Colbert) for the defense to worry about, those draw plays Fox love might actually work once in a while :-)

You're bragging on the Giants, but calling me a Yankee. Can you please explain to me how 3 Super Bowls are a fluke?
Posted by: LeeL | Feb 21, 2008 1:43:18 PM
The first Super Bowl was definetly a fluke, he is right. Oakland beat them and that absurd tuck rule came into play. Other than that no. The last super bowl did prove another point which I have said all along. It is not Brady but the offensive line that is great in NE. Brady when pressured is like all NFL quarterbacks average.

How about none of the above.

I think panthers should go after the running back turner and the te crumpler and wr stallworth i think we would have the pieces 2gether to make it to the playoffs.

The biggest mistake of the off-season is keeping Hurney and Fox. The next bad move would be bringing in another WR. Colbert can play if he is given the opportunity. Too many people have been on his case. Keary can be just as good as Stallworth or Washington.

Guys, lots of other good UFA receivers out there with more to come when it's bonus time. Wrote about the Pats because I was stunned at how many wideouts they could potentially lose. Like everyone, I would love to see Welker here; the guy is amazing, but not available. It will be interesting to see what NE does to restock...

The key part is for the panthers to get a proven receiver that can be relied upon other than Smith. Pieces around him to make it all fit. A banging running back and let’s see now what we will do. The other receiver is a key, that way the defense really has to play defense and their formations. We alter the defense not the defense altering us. If and Lord Willing Kenny Phillips fall to 13th to us, we get him the season is ours. God loves the Panthers need I remind you. He will take care of us this year. Beason and Kenny on our defense, LOOK OUT!

michael procton, you have officially lost your mind. the colbert comments are total lunacy. stallworth is no more than an average to decent at best WR, but comparing him to colbert is like comparing prime rib to a whopper jr.
Posted by: tomP | Feb 21, 2008 3:21:43 PM
I agree with tom...Procton, you can't honestly tell me that Keary Colbert is just as good as Stallworth after seeing Colbert disappear the past 2 seasons. I would take Stallworth over Colbert any day. If the price is right, Stallworth wouldn't be a bad option at all for our receiving corps.

Procton
Unlike most around here I love your input. However, I think its time to let Colbert make a new start somewhere else. I beleive that the talent is in him but that it will never show up in Carolina.
I like the idea of Stalworth but it seems there are a ton of at least good receivers that will be available. I believe we will get one.

I don't want any of those Patriots receivers. Moss has the skills but I doubt he'll get along with Smith. And then the rest of those guys won't even be as good on other teams.
Stallworth has the gimpiest hamstrings alive. I like to call him Mr. Hammy. Kelley Washington...who? Troy Brown is too old. Jabar Gafney was out of the league until the Pats signed him.
The truth of the matter is it's the Patriots offensive scheme that made those guys (other than Moss) look decent. You put them on other teams and they will quickly disappear guaranteed.

If we can get a regular whopper with cheese for Keary Colbert straight up, then do it and do it quickly before somebody at Burger King changes their mind.

I believe Stallworth or Joey Porter would be great additions. We have to get rid of Colbert, and the guy who made the statement about keeping Colbert has to be out of his mind. We should trade deshaun for a safety and/or a receiver. Draft a DE, DT, and another CB.

Stan, Stallworth's entire career in NO was marked by hammy pulls.
Posted by: rock | Feb 21, 2008 4:49:33 PM
Colbert is a UFA this year if he make it on the Panthers roster they got to resign him(not a chance in hell). The only WR coming back thats still signed is Smith,Robinson,& Jarret.I wouldn't sign any of these WR Stallworth is alway hurt & the others isn't what the Panthers are looking for.
Posted by: Damon | Feb 21, 2008 5:49:54 PM
Procton, Colbert could not even play arena league football, he will not be in the league next year and will be done with. Try writing something worthwhile every now and then Momma's Boy
