Bengals free-agent linebacker Johnson visits Panthers

The Carolina Panthers hosted a visit Thursday from Cincinnati Bengals free agent linebacker Landon Johnson, one of the highest-rated players at his position available in the open market.

Johnson (6-2, 232 pounds) started all 32 games the past two seasons for the Bengals and had over 100 tackles each season.

He has played all three linebacker positions, but is probably best suited to play outside.
Johnson is the most highly-rated free agent known to have visited the Panthers so far.

Not a bad signing,Also Takeo Spikes had been release by the Eagles he's not a bad fit ,He's was 2 in takle on the Eagles last years.

johnson would be a great to have on the side opposite thomas davis. diggs is the starter there right now, but he is only solid at best and will never be a playmaker. johnson has great size and speed and would give us one of the fastest trios of linebackers in the league

Ok so lets say we sign this fellow from the spectacular Bengals Defense, what exactly does that do to help our Dfensive Line that is losing players left and right, with the exception of Brayton,I suppose.

Are the Panthers going to a 3-4? whats the deal.

Posted by: Ghost of Sparta | Mar 6, 2008 7:55:58 PM

na'il diggs is decent but we could use some insurance at LB. If Davis, Diggs or (God forbid) Beason gets hurt, we don't really have anyone who can step in and keep our defense playing at a high level. Tim Shaw is still young and we might end up losing Seward. So if we can get this Johnson guy for decent money then it would be an excellent signing. We have many higher priorities than LB, such as DL as you said, but we have the cap space now to sign a guy like this and fill our other needs.

"Competition brings out the best in people." If we can afford it, why not. As far as a switch to a 3-4 D, I've been assuming the same for years now (also been assuming a switch to nickel too). However, I just think Fox just likes quality depth if he can obtain it.

I would love to see Johnson sign here. Diggs has never impressed me too much, he's been serviceable but we do need an upgrade at his spot. As for the D-Line i wouldnt worry too much....with the cap space we have now and the draft still a month and a half away i think we'll see 2 or 3 more lineman signed or drafted. I have a feeling that McClover, Johnson and maybe a future FA signee we end up competing for Ruckers old spot. That leaves us needing another PROVEN (not Tyler Brayton) DT to rotate with Kemo on passing downs.

Carolina Should Pick him up He Has a Very Good Record
plus he is the highest in free agency and we just have Moose who good we need more like on more WR

BUT WE SHOULD PICK SOMEONE WHO GOOD !!!!!

From CBSSportsline...This guy is pretty good:
Bengals LB Landon Johnson will be a hot commodity on the free agent market after a solid season in 2007. Johnson, a rising fifth-year player who will turn 27 on March 31, has led the Bengals in tackles for three of his four seasons with the team. He had 109 tackles (70 solo) in 2007 with one defensive touchdown, two fumble recoveries and a half-sack. Johnson started all 16 games, upping his four-year participation totals to 53 starts and 64 games played. He did not miss a game due to injury.
(Updated 01/24/2008).

Landon Johnson ! not bad for a pick up.Could start either in place of Thomas or Diggs.Thomas Davis will never be a pro bowl type of LB.Clark Haggans could fit in also since Hurney loves Steelers players.
Also Panthers could trade their 5th round again to the Bears this time for DE Mark Anderson??????

Er, uh, who? I will say it's refreshing to see the huge push put by the front office on signing a D End like Tyler Brayton-who "didn't live up to his potential in Oakland" (by the way, who can't live up to their potential on one of the worst teams in the league) when we disregard a better DE that was already on the team (Rucker) and completely ignore free agent names like Kearse, Jared Allen, Justin Smith, Terrell Suggs, and did I mention Rucker? Oh but I'm sorry-I'm being too negative for some of you guys. I know, fandom these days equates to blind loyalty while management walks over the edge of the proverbial sub-.500 cliff. Just don't expect me to hold your hand on the way down.

Wow and they just resigned Donte Curry as well,I know Curry is more for special teams but they are definetly going to have options if they bring Johnson from the Bengals in.Then decesions will have to be made and cuts will come as well, they must be planning on the Pats signing Seward.

Sign him now!!! He is very good and would be a perfect fit for us. Also, before it is too late, go after Bryant Johnson (WR Cardinals) he is another perfect fit that would instantly upgrade our offense. ENOUGH WITH SIGNING BACKUPS....lets start going after some big time name players now that are difference makers!!!

Yeah baby let's sign some playa's and lick some boobs!

Let's not forget, just because we haven't re-signed Rucker doesn't mean we're going to lose him. For a player of Ruck's status right now, it's kind of hard to value him...back end of career, 1 year removed from knee surgery, comtemplating retirement...so you let the market value him for you. I bet he'll resign with us, play one more season, and then retire a Panther, or retire before the season...why pack up and move for one year? We'll have quality depth at DE...but I'm with charles, we better get B. Johnson before it's too late. He's just sittin out there and AZ wants him so bad, but they can't sign him b/c of Fitzgerald...why you think they tryin to unload Fitz on Philly? They can do just as good w/ Anquan and Bryant for way cheaper....we need to snatch him and Landon up quick.

If we wanted a linebacker, why didn't we trade for Vilma. We would have gotten a player and a draft pick. And we would have kept a player from a division rival. Way to go

Posted by: Slow | Mar 6, 2008 10:02:28 PM

good pick he would really help.we have so much trouble guarding the tight ends in the seams

Posted by: eskimobob | Mar 6, 2008 10:02:44 PM

Okay L.Johnson had 109 tackles and N.Diggs had 58 tackles in 2007 that is enough of a reason right there to sign the guy! Beason, Davis and Johnson would be a great LB corp.

Hey Yeaaaaah, I'm just curious. When the Panthers signed Delhomme a few years back, were you one of the ones complaining that they didn't land Jake Plummer? Did you think Stephen Davis was washed up? Since you probably thought Delhomme was a waste, you were probably thrilled to get a major talent in here like David Carr to provide some real leadership. And that kid they drafted last year (I think his name was Beasman or something?), that was a wasted draft pick, huh? Every team signs players that don't work out, and every team gets lucky with some "underachievers" some times. Some fans don't believe the sky is falling on Charlotte, but that doesn't mean that they are mindless idiots guilty of blind loyalty to an organization.

Dan Morgan has signed with the Saints. Sad day

Posted by: Oh No. | Mar 6, 2008 10:25:24 PM

Brayton may not be that bad...the Raiders are a black hole for talent...compare what Warren Sapps numbers from Tampa Bay to the numbers he got in Oakland...also some guy named Moss dissappeared in Oakland for a bit too...and he just set NFL receiving records when he got out of Oakland....

I hope the Panthers are the first team to put Morgan on the shelf for the rest of his career,As MR.T a.k.a. Clubber Lang said in Rocky 3 "Fool Shoulda Neva Cameback"............
