Former Panther Carter signs with Raiders

With receivers bouncing around in an NFL version of musical chairs, the latest to grab a seat is free agent Drew Carter, late of the Panthers. Carter was picked up by Oakland, and maybe this time things will work out. Carter, for one thing, is very fast and Oakland likes to throw the ball deep, so that could be a good thing for both sides.

Carter, who also drew interest from Tampa Bay and Tennessee, never quite hit his stride with Carolina. A fifth-round draft choice in 2004, he missed his rookie season due to injury and totaled just 33 receptions in the following three seasons. But it was never like he had no ability -- eight of those 33 catches went for touchdowns.

Sometimes a guy just needs a change of scenery. We’ll see if that’s the case with Carter.

Hmmm... he was on the inconsistent side, I wouldn't have minded seeing him back. However, I'm sure Oakland threw some crazy money at him, and we definitely didn't need to shell out that kind of cash for him.

under achievers gotta go...

He seemed like a good guy and definitely has potential, but the Panthers don't have time for any more projects right now. I don't think anyone will be too upset with his departure, but I hope he does well.

Since when has Carolina ever had the ability to turn a QB's career around? haha This team simply can't develop young talent, especially when it comes to young Qb's! Can you imagine if Tom Brady or Payton Manning ended up in Charlotte with this team's coaching... wow! Their careers would go down the crapper.

Posted by: mike | Mar 12, 2008 9:19:40 PM

You got it, mike...they didn't turn a career backup into a Pro Bowler, the 16th-rated QB in NFL history, and one of the best Super Bowl performers at his position EVER.

AND THAT's DA BOTTOM LINE CAUSE MICHAEL PROCTON SAID SO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Jayj6 | Mar 12, 2008 10:04:45 PM

They better throw it about 10ft over his head because if the ball hits him in the chest or is in front of him he'll drop it.

Posted by: JT | Mar 12, 2008 10:10:17 PM

Are you kidding us Stan? Carter had 38 receptions just last year! He has 71 catches in his Panthers career, more than double the 33 you credited him with. I'm pretty sad to see him go. I was a big fan of his and wished the Panthers would've chucked it deep to him a whole lot more than they did. Good luck in Oakland.

No big surprise, an Observer employee reporting something in error.
Stan is still too concerned with making sure he announces how EVERY Panthers fan wanted Michael Turner here when it was actually him that started all that bs talk.

The title of this one should have been, "Can Hackett hack it?" It's pretty obvious to me that the DJ camp is trying to bolster up his asking price.... Visits with Tampa (Panther rival), DC (diarrhea of the money bags) and us, the "playoff contender." I'm just not sure who all this strutting around and dress up act is directed toward. Regardless, I hope the cat brass wont overpay for this guy. Why pay someone for his pontential?? Which leads me to this...
If they were going to sign a name WR ("with alot of upside") and throw a good contract at him, they should have just kept Carter around. I'm ok with them throwing decent money at a decent player, but if you're going to do that, than why not just keep the player that is familiar with your system, and a WR who has a repoir with your current QB? This deal can go either way for both Carter and Hackett.
Morever, first Jarrett gets arrested, then Carter gets signed by Oakland, and now the Panthers are in a bidding war for an injury-prone but reputable upper end FA WR? I really hope Hurney doesn't pull the trigger on this deal for the sake of good PR. Oh yeah, Stan, I've always believed in killing the messenger. So, in leu of the extra pressure this article puts on the franchise please tell your source I said they can go *%#@ themselves. Thanks. If DJ has something to say, he should have enough integrity to go public with it and not play games to get an edge.
That being said, keep up the good work Stan and thanks for keeping us posted. :)

Who would win in a fight between Stan Olson and Chuck Norris?

Posted by: jack bauer | Mar 12, 2008 11:43:37 PM

I think Drew Carter had potential...but I am amazed that nobody noticed the most obvious flaw in his game. He NEVER caught the ball at its highest point...a basic fundamental for a wide receiver. He always caught the ball with his hands down. If he had simply reached up with his hands to catch balls at their highest point he would have been MUCH more productive. It frustrated me to death that he never changed this. If you get a chance to look at any old game films, you will see it. Am I crazy??

drew carter i've always said you had talent that next year would be your breakout year. you showed it last year with the game in green bay with old man vinny throwing it to you. i was hopin we would re-sign you and you could have finally gotten your shot to be the number 2 reciever i thought when colbert signed with denver we were bringing you back but i was wrong. maybe down the road you will come back. to anyone who doubts drew carter yeah he drops passes but every reciever does. and i bet you this coming year he will have a better year than whoever we get to take his place good luck drew!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: kirk | Mar 13, 2008 12:13:41 AM

I'm with you Kirk. And TC, Carter was scared to get hit, but he showed some flashes of tenacity and strength last year. He also showed the ability to work the middle effectively. Just the same, I really thought Moose could have been a good role model to Carter by showing him how to dish out some punishment. He mentored Smitty and look how well the 5'9" 189 frame manhandles opponents (with one arm on some occasions). Oh well. Coulda, shoulda, woulda but didn't. Hopefully this Hacket character works out if we sign him.

Who is going to play free safety on this team? I really don't understand the lack of interest in bringing back Deke Cooper, who was more than capable last year and led the team in INT's.
Can Kenny Phillips out of Miami play that spot? If so it may be worth trading up into the bottom of the 1st round to get him. I like Clady but don't think he's worth trading up into the top 10 for...Chris Williams at 13 would be just fine, or trade down a little and take Otah or Baker. But whatever we do we CANNOT move Gross back to LT. I the Panthers would trust one of the names above at LT more than him, which says a lot about "franchise" Gross's game.

Also still need to address the fact that there are only 3 DT's on the roster, and that a guy that is only known for dropping a knee on Jerramy Stevens in a game and tackling Randy Moss in the locker room is starting opposite Peppers.

5-11 at best with this roster

Posted by: Jess | Mar 13, 2008 8:24:11 AM

Well I guess all the Drew Carter detractors finally got their wish. He is leaving and I hope he has a breakout year so that he can finally prove that he IS a starting WR in the NFL. He had a great year last year in spite of starting the season as the third receiver. If people look at all the free agent wide receivers this year Drew ranks 13th among some impressive names like Jerry Porter and Ernest Wilford. Drew is also one of the biggest and arguably one of the top five fastest free agents this year. I believe Drew was a victim of the system he was playing in, an inconsistent QB (Delhomme) and another WR who cries like a newborn baby if another receiver has more catches or yards than him (Steve Smith). Smith is a beast but he is also a jerk and the coaches cater to him at the expense of the entire offense. Mark your calendar Raiders v. Panthers at Oakland!!! I predict that Drew will have 100+ yds.

Stan Olson's tears cure cancer. Too bad he never cries.

Posted by: LeeL | Mar 13, 2008 9:05:47 AM

Can't believe that dude wants to bring back Deke Cooper. Yeah, he got 3 interceptions. But how many times did he blow coverage and we got scored on??? Kenny Phillips is overrated and not worth a 1st round pick. At worst, we can see what Nate Salley can do.

Carter had his moments and was better than Colbert but injuries definitely hampered him. He could be a deep threat from time to time but really never got going after his rookie year. He is not a starter and if he is 13th among FAs you have to bear in mind this year is rather thin at FA WR's. At least he stayed out of trouble, unlike Jarrett.
Good question on the FS position, you would think we would have done something about it in FA since the draft is really thin at that position. Salley had a lot of potential heading into last year but then got hurt, maybe our coaching staff sees something in him and is willing to roll with him as the starter.
We could use Hackett but definately should not overpay for him, he has some upside but we dont need another Sean Gilbert/Hartwig/Carr/Kemo overpriced underachiever on the squad this season.

What about Eugene Wilson? Have ya'll heard anything bout the Panthers being interested in him at all?

Posted by: EG | Mar 13, 2008 12:20:35 PM

5-11? Weren't we predicted to go something like 6-10 the year we almost beat the Pats in the Super Bowl?
