Hackett's in town for visit

We're told that Seattle free agent wide receiver D.J. Hackett has made it to Charlotte. Now the question is whether the Panthers can convince him to play for them.

Hackett flew to town earlier today after visiting Washington and Tampa Bay on consecutive days. His stay here is supposed to last into Saturday.

Then he'll decide whether to stay with the Seahawks or pick one of the other three teams.

The Panthers sure could use more depth at wide receiver to compete with Muhsin Muhammad, Dwayne Jarrett, Travis Taylor and Ryne Robinson for playing time next to Steve Smith.

Seahawks fans and Hackett's fantasy football owners can tell you how productive he was last season when healthy. The problem is he had ankle problems and missed 10 games.

Still, he's by far the best wide receiver left on the market and he's got big-time potential.

-- Recently released Panthers center Justin Hartwig visited the Steelers today. The Rams might also be interested.

-- There's still no word on whether the Patriots are going to sign Carolina restricted free agent linebacker Adam Seward to an offer sheet.

-- Good move by the 49ers deciding not to give Jerry Rice's No. 80 jersey number to recent signee Isaac Bruce. Even though Bruce had many outstanding years with the Rams wearing 80, no one should wear it for San Francisco again now that Rice, the NFL's all-time leading receiver, has retired.

-- Shifting sports, if the Yankees had invited Stan to try out rather than Billy Crystal, there's no way he would've struck out.

"Big time potential" should equate to big time incentive clauses. However, he should still be signed to near minimum to to injury issues (aka potential bust should be signed to low risk contract).

My boy would have hit a home run!

He was a play maker for seattle and a deep threat WR ...too bad im a panthers fan 4life...He only had high ankle sprains nothing serious, but the most thing that matters is that he can catch the football.I'm curious to see Travis Taylor and Dwayne Jarett this coming season how productive they will be.Also!GOOD move by the 49ers not to give the #80 to the bum Isacc Bruce....

DOES ANYONE KNOW ABOUT THIS RUMOR IN NFL????
If Carolina becomes convinced it can't re-sign Julius Peppers, who becomes an unrestricted free agent next year and wants a boatload of money, and if the Vikings are willing to part with their first-round (No. 17) draft pick next month plus at least $20 million in guaranteed money, Minnesota might be able to trade for the star defensive end.

The Vikings, who were nearly $37 million under the NFL's salary cap until their recent free-agency spending, are still $18.6 million under the cap.

THANKS!

i would hate to see Julius wearing that gay color jersey.

So SYRPIS you are basically saying you don't want Hackett here I take it? Or you just aren't being realistic. Maybe they SHOULD sign him to an incentive based deal, but there is 0.0% chance that happens, considering the other teams he visited. He's already not accepted a contract from Washington, and if TB makes him an offer it's not going to be for some crap incentive based minimum deal...they have unlimited cap room.
Just curious also, who are you hoping the Panthers hold out money for to sign? They've spent nothing and brought in nobodys this offseason outside of 1 LB. I'm not saying they should let Hackett name his price, but give him a good offer and if he's a bust just cut him like all the other busts Hurney has signed.

Stan Olson is ten feet tall, weighs two-tons, breathes fire, and could eat a hammer and take a shotgun blast standing.

Good call by the 49ers for not giving Rice's number to Bruce. The Seahawks previous GM, Whitsitt, "gave" #80 to Jerry Rice without Largent's approval. I still see people wearing #80 Seattle jersey's with "Rice" on the back. It really pisses me off. NO real Hawks fan should be wearing a #80 jersey without Largent's name on it! Sorry to rant.

Is there a more annoying, gay team in America than Duke? I can't watch this.

Bucs signed DB Eugene Wilson to a one-year, $1.8 million contract. The deal includes $500,000 guaranteed.

But hey, we've got Richard Coldcloughs for the same price or damn near close to it.
It's so painful just sitting here watching the Panthers do nothing while the division gets considerably stronger. It's really going to hurt when Hackett walks out of here tomorrow and also signs with Tampa.
Do something Hurney, you sorry fu ck!!

Wow if those numbers are correct on the Wilson deal in Tampa, then it just further proves the point that Hurney is unqualified to be a NFL GM. I am hoping Hurney gives Hackett a good offer, but being a Panther fan I am expecting the worse. Tampa probally signs him too.

it's what they're reporting on tampa's site:

Let's get him - I like Hackett and think he is a good prospect with lots of potential. He will help our offense and if you watched him last year when he played, he did very well. Unfortunately, injuries have been somewhat of a concern. I don't think it will be a big problem as long as we keep some depth, which we would have if we add him.

Posted by: james | Mar 14, 2008 8:23:56 PM

Reading the Link that T. Benedict just posted makes me sick. How do we let this guy go to a division rival and not even make him an offer. For a veteran Safety with boatloads of playoff experience and for them to get him at the price that they did was a steal. We haven't had someone qualified to start at the free safety position in about 3 years. You would think at some point, AT SOME POINT, we would sign someone. Wilson was the best free safety left of of the free agent lot.

What do you think about the Lion's DE, Kalimba Edwards? Would he be a good fit in Carolina? I'm trying to see how we're going to shore up that D-line. The draft isn't going to be the fix we need. We need some experience up there, and depth. Is there any DT and DE's that the Panthers are considering at this time? Thanks

Posted by: Ken | Mar 14, 2008 8:44:18 PM

Please sign Hackett.....Please?

Posted by: rhackney | Mar 14, 2008 8:48:03 PM

Who knows what's going on. Bryant Johnson signs a 1 year deal w/ SF and we did not even bring this guy in for an invite. I really hope Hurney has a plan, because his signings are about as inconsistent as our play the last 2 years.

Posted by: UCC | Mar 14, 2008 9:25:55 PM

I hate when "fans" complain about not signing someone. Have you ever stopped to think that some players would prefer to play somewhere else for personal reasons. I know it is hard to comprehend that it is not always about money and they just want to be happy where they go. I have not seen anybody cussing Randy Moss for not leaving the Patriots for more money. Tampa Bay may have signed him but if they believed so much in his abilities why do you sign him to just one year. Just something to think about.

Posted by: cheerman23 | Mar 14, 2008 9:33:43 PM

Nate - you should read the paper more, and watch NFL network.. Largent insisted that RICE have #80 in Seattle.. And because of this, RICE insisted that Isaac Bruce have his #80 in San Fran.. Rice is even quoted as saying, how professional Largent was, and he was returning the favor to Isaac Bruce..

I WANT EVErYONE

Posted by: ME | Mar 14, 2008 9:40:02 PM

Terry, it definitly has me wondering. We obviously need safety help. We sign a 4th CB to a 2mil/yr dollar contract, and yet E. Wilson signs with our division rival for less than that. Don't get it. And the fact that he wasn't even granted an invite. I really hope there is something out there I'm not getting. Because I was screaming last year for Kawika Mitchill and Ken Hamlin, and they too were not invited to Charlotte. Hurney, in my opinion, is out of his league. Maybe if he signs Hackett, things will be better. But even so, why whould you cut Hartwig when it costs you more money to do so. Don't get it, why not keep him as insurance in case RK goes down. Essentially, they paid money to get rid of him, makes no sense to me regardless of what you think of Hartwig.

Posted by: UCC | Mar 14, 2008 9:46:24 PM

cheerman23, I hate when people bitch about people who want the Panthers to show interest in people who fill team needs, regardless as to whether we sign them or not.

Posted by: UCC | Mar 14, 2008 9:50:56 PM

Lions release Kevin Jones. Panthers should pick him up.
