Panthers release Hartwig

The Carolina Panthers released center/guard Justin Hartwig today, the team announced.

That clears the way for Ryan Kalil, a second-round pick last season, to take over as the starting center.

Hartwig was a prominent free agency signing for the Panthers in 2006. However, he missed most of that season with injuries.

More details to come later.

smart move financially i suppose, if they believe that kalil is going to work out okay as a starter..they have a lot of interior lineman. hopefully they can grab a good LT in the draft and not have to trade up...i just hope they dont reach and draft the 4th best T available.

Wow, I'm surprised at the timing. But change is really needed on the Oline. What are the cap implications? And I'm hoping the idea is to draft a LT in round 1.

Wonder if they're getting ready to sign someone? Bryant Johnson, perhaps?

Leaves more holes on the o-line. Hartwig was hurt in 2006 but played last year, and played well enough to keep Kalil on the sidelines for most of the year. The Panthers are putting a lot on "if" this year, if Kalil plays well, if Jarrett plays well, etc.

Thats another need for a their few draft picks.

I'm surprised they cut the guy this early but I guess Kalil proved he could do the job last year to them after Hartwig got hurt. It's no great loss but I thought they would've at least let the guy compete for a spot. Jarrett is an idiot by the way...that kid has now idea of how to be a pro. I hope Moose and Smith are able to get some knowledge through his thick skull because obviously...this kid isn't getting it. I think they have to sign another receiver now given Jarrett's continued on field and now off field issues.

Simple economics...To many OG's means get rid of the expensive one. Kind of like when B of A send jobs to India. They can't speak the language, but if they can do what you can do cheaper it will ensure translator on here a job...

I have to assume that they at least tried to trade him, but they couldn't get something, ANYTHING, from a lineman-starved team? Say, the Chiefs? The same Chiefs who have a disgruntled, albeit slightly slow, safety on their roster? Or the Steelers? Or the Rams? He must be some damaged goods at this point.

Does anyone know the cap ramifications on this one?

Posted by: SYRPIS | Mar 11, 2008 5:57:35 PM

I read this cuts $2.1 million in cap space.

So far we have let go or not re-signed: starting OG, C, 2nd & 3rd WR, RB, DE, DT, MLB, back up QB, and never had a starting FS to begin with.

This offseason we have signed a starting OLB, 3rd RB, 3rd WR, and 3 or 4 average back ups.

For some reason these numbers don't add up. The draft better get here fast!

hola translator. Me llamo Jose. Mis pantalones estan en fuego! Llamar la policia por favor! Donde esta David Carr? Es un quarterbacko mucho bueno! Adios!

They had to cut him. He is an underacheiver. My only memory of Hartwig was watching him get completely manhandled by Albert Haynesworth!!! Sign Bryant Johnson and cut Jarret!!!2 YEAR WR problem???????FIXED...
