Peppers trade bait? No way!

In the electronic age in which we live, rumors with no basis in truth can start, spread and force reporters to essentially chase after air.Panthers_cowboys_01

For the past several days, Stan and I have received e-mails asking if the Panthers were trying to trade Julius Peppers. There was a rumor claiming Stan started the whole thing during a radio interview on a Minnesota radio talk-show. Stan said he hadn’t even done an interview with a Minnesota station.

One e-mail, apparently gleaned from message boards around the country, suggested that Peppers was going to be sent to the Minnesota Vikings in a deal that would bring the Panthers running back Chester Taylor and a first-round pick.

There was enough fuss that I figured I’d check it out. So, yesterday, I contacted Panthers general manager Marty Hurney and Peppers’ agent, Carl Carey. Hurney assured me the Panthers were not trying to trade Peppers and Carey was just as insistent that Peppers would be a Panther this season.

I decided it was a non-story.

Then, today, the issue resurfaced in a broader sense, so I figured I’d tell you what we knew.

Bottom line: Peppers is going nowhere. Hurney said it again today – emphatically.

As for something that is a real story, neither Hurney nor Carey are saying anything about their negotiations to extend Peppers’ contract. Stay tuned on that one.

Good update. Thanks.

The Panthers are obviously idiots to turn down a first round pick and Chester Taylor for Peppers.

Posted by: Rich | Mar 7, 2008 5:03:37 PM

Anyone can be traded. If it's a Hershel Walker type of deal I'm all for it!!! Tat helped make the cowboys a dynesty....

Posted by: Local | Mar 7, 2008 5:18:48 PM

I don't think there ever was a deal, someone was on the net causing problems. Somebody was on a message board with like a dozen user names and posting different stories about hearing Peppers going to MN and then he would answer himself that he heard it also.

However I would listen to offers for Peppers if the price was right. One more year like last year and you won't get jack. Plus with Gross and Gamble being due new contracts; figure somebody will have to go.

Lets trade him for a slew of first round picks for years and years to come, hes got alot of value right now.

Posted by: Derek | Mar 7, 2008 5:24:25 PM

The rumor must have been started by a Panthers fan - would have been a good deal for the Panthers!

Posted by: Wayne | Mar 7, 2008 5:25:52 PM

Pep aint goin nowhere. I get sick of people tryin to bag him for 1 BAD SEASON. Every other season was solid. he is the face of our franchise(next to Smitty and Beason).

Posted by: Chase | Mar 7, 2008 5:34:57 PM

I can't beleive the CRAP I'm reading. The guy has ONE bad year and your ready to get rid of him!!!!The same guy that everyone has always said " a freak of nature, unbeleivable athletic skills" Not to mention he is a HOMETOWN BOY.. and for what Chester Taylor and Ryan Clady? No Way that is a good deal for the panthers. Sign Mike Anderson and draft Ray Rice or even Mendenhall for that matter. It would be a hell of a lot easier to replace Chester Taylor than it would a Julius Peppers. Anyone that would make a ludicrous trade like that is a FOOL!!!

Posted by: wowo | Mar 7, 2008 5:36:41 PM

NO WAY JOSE!!! PEPPERS TO BE PANTHERS FOR LIFE!!!! He may have bad season in sacks last year but hes doing great. And I looking forward to an awesome 2008 season but I hope Panthers would bring good and potential running back to Carolina. Lets wait and see!!

Posted by: Brad Hardin | Mar 7, 2008 5:36:42 PM

I'd say Taylor would be a bad move anyway. We don't need another Foster. We need someone to pound the D-line and run over the secondaries. Taylor is not it, so even if this were true, I wouldn't be happy with it.

Posted by: Bbbbb | Mar 7, 2008 6:04:37 PM

It's not the one bad year people want to see go, it's the obvious lack of commitment to team success. That guy was doing more game watching on the field then the Panther fans were doing in the stand!!!

Posted by: SYRPIS | Mar 7, 2008 6:09:00 PM

Actually Taylor is exactly the kind of back that could pound the line and run over safeties. Still, I don't see any way the Vikes offer than much for Peppers, and no way the Panthers want to trade Peppers anyway. Non story.

And if they did THAT, They would be FINISHED!,Pep and Smith,IS CAROLINA!

It's mainly the Tampa,New Orleans and Falcants trolls that post on the board that want to see Peppers gone off the Panthers team.Gruden said it himself last year, its insane to not value or want Julius Pepppers on your team and he Makes every team the Panthers face Gameplan against him regardless of what the "Fans" think.

Peppers needs to act like he cares a little. If next season is like the past season his rear end will be run out of town. He is costing himself a lot of money with his apathy.

I've heard about this rumour for some time. Panthers are just trying to delay the process. The Panthers trade is going to happen, and I think it's a great deal!

Posted by: Thomas Favors | Mar 7, 2008 9:16:46 PM

peppers will not leave. He is the best defensive player we have and my favorite NFL player, Period. If he goes i will persoanally drive to Bank of America Stadium and burn myself on the 50 yard line like those buddist monks did in Vietnam.

For those who think Pep is getting traded....you're nutz!!!! If every great player got traded after one down year then there would be a lot of happy GM's out there ready to pounce on guys like that to get their team over the hump. Pep will be here for 08 and Pep will get a long term deal...PERIOD!!! For those who don't like it, get over it!! Oh yeah, for all the naysayers, don't jump on his nutsack next season when he has 15 sacks!!!

Posted by: Jerard Waymer | Mar 8, 2008 4:45:49 AM

It is not about Peppers having one bad year....

It is simply about the following:

1. He has had one bad year
2. He is a highlight real player
3. He cannot bull rush anyone like a real DE should be able to do
4. He is good in coverage and pursuit but that is great for a LB not a DE
5. His cap number is 17-18 million - too much for anyone. You could pay 5 quality DEs for that
6. His attitude is pathetic - no leadership traits
7. He cares all about the money or he would have restructured
8. Carolina fans are in love with him because he came from Chapel Hill - get over it...he is not even one of the best 5 DEs in the league - Not even close to Uyiminura

The positive Carolina fans have is that Marty and John (and old man game playing Richardson in the background playing scrabble) making all the decision still so this move would probably never happen. We will wait until the trade value goes a little lower.

I love it....trade Jenkins (who stepped up as your defensive leader and voice) to free up 3 million but keep Peppers (who totally ignored the calling because he is weak) who is taking up 17 million.....

No one here can say Peppers has played that much better than Kris Jenkins....just goes to show you how screwed up Hurney and crew are.

Posted by: Dave | Mar 8, 2008 9:15:58 AM

Dave...Dave...Dave. WHere have you been for the last 4 or 5 years. Peppers has had 1 "off-season" since he has been here. Any other year and would chew up any other DE end in the league. You also speak of Umenyora from the Giants. GIVE ME A BREAK! That guy had 1 awesome game against the Eagles 5th string tackle. THats where he got the majority of his sacks, not to mention he had Strahan on the other side of him (you think that wold help any DL just a bit?). Peppers help was by committee on the otherside the whole year. I would take Peppers in a contract year over anybody, regardless of position. THis guy is gonna come out swinging I gaurantee.

And by the way a high 3rd and 5th rounder for a guy who doesn't want to be here is pretty darn good. Thanks for playing Dave.

rhackney: that post is the biggest homer nonsense I have ever read. Dave, you are all over it my friend. If Pep wasn't a hometown guy, people's eyes would have been open long ago. Someone please tell me ONE great season Peppers has ever had in his pro career. He has had portions of seasons where he has shined but then he falls right back into mediocrity. He has NEVER shown the potential I have read about for years now. I really can't put it any better than
Dave but it is funny to read all of the Peppers' homer fans on this site who just make rediculous excuses for a guy who just isn't that good and has ZERO leadership ability. Trade his ass.

Posted by: Josh | Mar 8, 2008 12:25:48 PM

Pardon my language:
'trade his butt'
My apologies.

Posted by: Josh | Mar 8, 2008 12:29:08 PM

Peppers is a great DE. People say he is the panthers organization, if he was, wouldnt he have stepped up and been a leader this season? Wouldnt he have actually done something productive this season even thought it was over and not just given up and gotton placed on IR? I mean come on, what kind of a "Panther" does that crap? Its ridiculous, he is something very special, and we can get alot for him, so lets do it.

Posted by: Derek | Mar 8, 2008 12:38:42 PM
