Panthers pick up Tar Heel

The Panthers made the first of their three seventh-round picks their first North Carolina player since Julius Peppers, choosing outside linebacker Hilee Taylor.

Taylor, who is just under 6-foot-3 and 236 pounds, would likely have to play linebacker with the Panthers, and is the appropriate size to do that. He is not particularly fast, with 4.76-second 40-yard speed, but did have 10.5 sacks as a senior.

this was an awful pick, as was the TE. all others were good picks

Thank goodness! A small, slow DE. "He has no inside moves or burst off the snap." Maybe they're going by the Bob Johnson school of business success: Tar Heels=tickets sold.

The other guys haven't fit our needs, but at least they were good players.

Check out his highlights

He has potential.

Wow, the ABCer Procton doesn't like this pick. Shocking.

That's the point of highlights...they only show the good plays. Taylor can't compete at the NFL level.

WHy not get a interior lineman or DB that would actually have a chance of making our team??

Posted by: Robby747 | Apr 27, 2008 5:39:39 PM

Peyton Hillis was STILL available....and they select a linebacker that probably won't make the team.

Fox/Hurn is scared to death of drafting a FB that might be better than Brad Hoover.

C'mon man, they can't all be 1st rounders. All the picks are all the positions that everybody was screaming for all offseason. They're doing the best they can at picking need/value instead of one or the other. How about a little props for these guys, or at least wait and see what happens. Should they have traded their next 5 years of 1st rounder to make all the complainers happy. Everybody is calling for their a**es and yet the 1st game hasn't been played. I think that they are doing one hell of a job with the picks they have. Read the best available at the picks they have and they are in the ball park with all of them. A++ ratings from espn and the likes, what do you folks want? It seems no matter what they do, a "professional analyst" out there in forum land could have done better. Then why are you sitting there typing a complaint letter instead of working in the nfl. Just kinda get tired of all the negativity. Tony Romo was an undrafted free agent, how come they didn't get him. Cause they're not freakin fortune tellers. How many people agreed that Shelton was a great 2nd round pick when it happened, thousands, we were all wrong, but they get the credit, not us. It's easy as hell being a couch GM or Coach. Get off your couch and coach just a little leage team if you think it's that easy. Whew, how was that? lol

We do still have 2 more 7th rounders...and is anyone really surprised? This is a typical 2nd day for us.

Posted by: ryan p | Apr 27, 2008 5:50:04 PM

Well he does show potential that video shows some serious pass rushing.

Posted by: paul | Apr 27, 2008 5:54:16 PM

To the person who didn't like the TE: You're an idiot. Mel Kiper loves him.

Posted by: asas | Apr 27, 2008 5:56:28 PM

Even at his size, i think he could be a situational DE on passing downs.

Procton, you remind me of Mel Kiper, no talent and book smart. Please you and your girlfriend Sypris shut the hell up! You two make these blogs suck!

The Te from Louisville was a Great pick,he is the type of Recieving threat that Jeff Davidson (Offensive Cord.) wants from the Te position.

When he is moving the chains and scoring T.D'S in the redzone you will be buying his jersey and Kissing his ...

Mel Kiper seems to like all of our picks today, which is nice to hear. But if I hear one more analyst talk about how bad we need a QB, I'm seriously going to march down there and punch him in the face!

So who made you God, dick face?

Posted by: CCU | Apr 27, 2008 6:15:55 PM

Well, after further looking into the TE we took, it may not be that bad of a pick, just not the player we need. As for Taylor, if he puts on 30-40 pounds he'll be a decent back up DE. Schwartz looks to be insurance at RG (damn that's a big line, Smallest guy being Kalil). I just keep hoping the last pick is Dykes...

Posted by: Morandir | Apr 27, 2008 6:23:39 PM

the Bengals just got a steal in Mario Urrutia....he had a bad year last year - but that guy is a tough wide receiver.

The cats will pick someone we have never heard of with their last pick.

Posted by: CJ | Apr 27, 2008 6:29:02 PM

It was worse than I thought....not only have I not heard of the Panthers last pick....I have never heard of his college. Yikes!!!!

Posted by: CJ | Apr 27, 2008 6:39:21 PM

So you want an already slow player to put 40 pounds on a frame that can't support it? THAT'S a recipe for success.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Apr 27, 2008 7:26:13 PM

Not saying Taylor is the next Beason but isnt Taylor # simliar to Beason #? Beason is 6`1" at 236 and ran a 4.74 at last year combine if I recall correctly.Taylor is small for a DE but SLOW?

Posted by: mike39520 | Apr 27, 2008 7:37:32 PM

Not particularly fast? 4.76 40 yard dash? I don't know where all that came from but Hilee Taylor ran the 40 yard dash in 4.50 seconds on his pro day, and that is extremely fast and a true speed rusher. Check that video on youtube and tell me he looks like a 4.76. If he works on his game he can be similiar to John Abraham.
