Rucker's farewell: As classy as it gets

It was an honor to be at Mike Rucker's farewell press conference today. He spoke from his heart and, in doing so, revealed his heart. There was a strength to his voice as he displayed a passion for God, his wife and family, Jerry Richardson and the Panthers organization, his coaches and trainers, the game he is leaving behind, and -- as he said, "last but not least" -- his teammates.
"There's nothing like going to battle with your comrades," Rucker told at least 25 current and former players gathered in the team meeting room, including quarterback Jake Delhomme. "That's one of the biggest things I'll miss. I love you dudes. I'd do it all over again. I want you to know I gave it all I had. I laid it on the line for you."
Earlier, in speaking from the podium to coach John Fox, Rucker said, "The tank is empty ... it's empty."
Rucker said it was difficult to bid farewell to football after nine NFL seasons, but he said he's also joyful. In remembering a telephone conversation earlier today with his brother Martin, a Missouri tight end expected to be a mid-round pick in this weekend's draft, he talked of how exciting it is when you're reading a good book to turn the page to the next chapter.
That's what today was about -- turning the page in Rucker's life from football to life after football. Owner Jerry Richardson advised him to retire now, rather than possibly spending a year or two with another team in another city. It's rare these days for a player to spend his entire career in one place, and Rucker agreed with Richardson that was the way he wanted to go out. He plans to remain in the Charlotte area and continue pursuing the business and community activities he's already begun.
Rucker eloquently thanked almost everyone there. First he thanked God, then his wife, then Jerry Richardson, then GM Marty Hurney, then coach John Fox ... on and on down to the equipment guys and even the media. To each one he named, he made personal remarks.
It was clear he meant every word.
"You mean a lot," he kept saying as he directly addressed people during his speech. "You mean a lot."
It's a virtual certainty that the people there would say the same thing to Rucker. He left the organization better than it was when he arrived nine years ago.
When his speech was over, everyone -- reporters included -- stood and applauded.
A few moments later, defensive coordinator sat Mike Trgovac sat in the back of the room and said Rucker and his good buddy Mike Minter, the former Panthers' safety who retired last year, are precisely the type of players and people the Panthers hope they can get in the NFL draft this weekend.
The Panthers will be mightily blessed if that happens.

Good luck with whatever you do from here on out. You will greatly be missed. You always have been a real class act on top of being a great player on the field.

Finally Rucker and Minter can focus some energy on those idiots they have running the ruckus house and clean the place up.

Mike, I wish you and your family God's speed in every aspect of your life. I count it a priveledge to know you and know that what you spoke today was from the heart. I am as you know a avid fan and appreciate skills and effort but more than that I appreciate how you have been a model citizen on and off the field. We will sorely miss you and that great big smile and the only non-vulgar trash talker. Good luck in your new careers and write the second chapter the same as the first with class. My thoughts when I think of you is sumed up in Proverbs 22:1 and I pray you will continue to honor and treasure your name. John Hurley

Exactly, PSLO...it's not surprising to hear how emotional he got when talking about Fox...this is one of the things that drives me most crazy about everybody calling for Fox's head. To a man, nearly every guy who's played for him calls him one of (if not THE) best coaches they've ever had. We'll miss you Ruck...way to keep it classy.

Thanks from the bottom of our hearts Ruck! You are truly a class act and we were blessed to have you as a Panther player. May God continue to bless you in all your future endeavors. You will certainly be missed!

Thank you Mike Rucker. When I took my kids to the games I always knew I could count on you to show them how the game should be played - on and off the field.

Best of luck Mike. You have always been a class act, and i know you always will be. Great on the field, and humble with great dignity off. We need scores more people like you. I hope you always call Charlotte home, and continue counseling the young people here. Thanks for your on the field play as well.

Proverbs 22
1 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

Now if only more players would model their lives like that.

Good luck, Mike, and thanks for the memories.
Between Minter and Rucker leaving in the last two years, we will definitely need to find courageous leadership from somewhere.
Minter and Rucker are the definition of leadership.

The mantra for the 2008 defense should be: Make the Mikes Proud. MMP. Hoo whaa! Okay, kind of lame. I get caught up in the moment. That's why I don't get invited to parties.

Hey, it was obviously different circumstances, but it worked when they played for Sam Mills and Mark Fields.
Posted by: Eric | Apr 22, 2008 4:27:28 PM
But no, you still can't come to my party.
Posted by: Eric | Apr 22, 2008 4:28:12 PM
That's okay. The Captain of the Top Cats just invited me over for a game of Naked Twister with the crew. Who'd of thunk it?

Good Luck Mike.We will all miss you on the field but we are looking foward to working with you as you embark on the second stage of your career off the field. And I'm sure you will be as productive and prosperous as you were with the panthers. Al B

Perhaps it is time to unveil two more statues outside of BoA Stadium.

As a fan I tip my hat to a man with the class and integrity to remain loyal to his team in a time when cash is king. Few teams can claim men of this caliber and character. I appreciate his gesture and applaud a great career. Best wishes in all your endeavors big Mike.
