Stan and Coach Fox

There was a great moment in the press conference earlier today when we were discussing the price of the 2009 first-round pick the Panthers  had to give up to move from the 43rd selection in the second round to Philadelphia's first-rounder at No. 19.

GM Marty Hurney said it's not something the team would normally do, but showed how much the Panthers valued the player they took at 19, Pitt OT Jeffrey Otah.

Our man Stan Olson suggested to Fox that it'd be a better deal if next year's pick turns out to be No. 32 overall. That's the last pick in the first round and annually goes to the Super Bowl champion.

Fox smiled and replied, "That would be right up my alley."

I like the move myself, especially if they are high on the guy. Remember Panther fans, its do or die for Fox and Hurney so they may not be here next year anyway. They are selling out, doing everything possible to win this year.

Way to go Stan, I mean jock sniffer!

This makes lot of sense as next year first round picks will be harder to sign as there is a potential lock out possible after 2010.

lock out???

So we just traded our 2nd, 4th, and next year's NUMBER ONE for a right tackle? I'm numb.

I dont think thety would have given either their 2nd or 4th if they didnt have 2 3rds. Relax wussup, lets worry about this yr.

I agree with Cster, 2 3rds still gives us the possibility to draft some talent. We still have plenty of picks left to stock the cupboard. As alway, GO CATS!

trading next year's Nr.1 pick is actually a very smart move, and really costs the Panthers nothing. Think about it like this. If Otah had one more year of college eligibility and was not available until next year's draft, he would almost certainly be a top 5 pick next year. The Panthers did not give away next year's Nr.1 pick - they just gave away a Nr.2 and Nr.4 to get next year's Nr.1 one year early ! Smart move Panthers. !!!

Mex, our pick will be better than #19 next year anyway, and a second-rounder alone is far too much to give up to get that early. Particularly given that Otah isn't an upgrade anywhere on the line. He won't play as well as Gross did last year at RT, and Gross won't play as well as Wharton did last year at LT.
