Value, value, value

What did the Panthers need with an LB, you say?

Well, remember Ryan Kalil last year. They didn't need a center then either.

Taking Penn State's Dan Conner at pick No. 74 clearly is an example of the Panthers having a player so high on their board that they couldn't pass him up for a need-based pick.

Conner was the highest rated player in the Observer's Top 100 coming into Day 2. He ranked 40th overall, so the Panthers got great value.

He figures to provide depth and perhaps make James Anderson and/or Adam Seward expendable.

I want you to repeat that after week 1 when the Chargers run through our DL and tell us that his value helped us

Posted by: Vernon | Apr 27, 2008 10:43:40 AM

Hay Chandler lets see how much value he has when teams are averaging 6 yards a carry on us because we only have 4 DT. 2 of the 4 are practice squad players!

Exellent point Vern, but I dont see a 3rd rounder say, Pat Simms, will help us early own, especially against LT.

I think Carolina should convert to a 3-4 defense. They now have the talent at LB to do so. This would also aleviate some of the probloems with the DLine.

with all the LB's we have the panthers should look at switching defensive schemes from the 4-3 to the 3-4

terrible pick for need, awesome for value, we have drafted for value the past drafts with fox/hurney and see how that worked out

Posted by: Matt | Apr 27, 2008 10:49:20 AM

It wasn't a value pick. We are implementing a new 2-5 defense this year.

Mel is saying that Connor will be a liability in pass coverage. Are the Panthers looking at moving him or maybe Davis to play opposite Pep on the line?

Posted by: fizzwap | Apr 27, 2008 10:50:00 AM

I would wait until Kalil plays before saying that he was the right value last year. Plus, if Anderson is cut then you've wasted a 3rd round pick to make up for another 3rd round bust.

Godfrey was a good pick - future safety. But Connor? We need a DT. Dre Moore was sitting waiting to be grabbed. Overall the draft has been great, but where are our DT's?

Posted by: Jake | Apr 27, 2008 10:50:15 AM

There were at least 3 decent DT's left at the top of the list. WHY DIDNT WE TAKE ONE! We dont pick again til round 5, theres no way we'll find starting caliber DLine that far down...

Posted by: JT | Apr 27, 2008 10:51:49 AM

Relax. There are plenty of DT's left on the board that can be impact players, and I'm sure some of them will be left when the Panthers select again in the 5th. Defenses are built from the middle out, and these last 2 picks give the panthers their MLB and FS of the future with EXCELLENT value. They'll get a DT in the 5th. The Connor pick also gives the Panthers the option of moving Beason back out to OLB if they choose to move Davis back to SS, or let him go once his contract expires. They are drafting extremely smart this year.

Matt, in the past, Hurney has drafted for need, not value. James Anderson, Rashad Butler, Eric Shelton, Evan Mathis, Atiyyah Ellison - all need over value picks. Yeah.

Posted by: g | Apr 27, 2008 10:53:39 AM

Didn't they learn their lesson with "value" last year? The biggest need on the team last year was Safety. Never drafted one. This year biggest need is DT, and have yet to draft one. These guys continue to make poor decisions. These will likely cost them their jobs.....

Value is important, but how can you only have 2 DTs worth anything on the roster and not take a DT in Round 3 with 2 picks. It's not like there aren't DTs with Round 3 grades available.

Kemo is big enough to be an anchor DT for a 3-4, and we now apparently have the LBs.

Posted by: John | Apr 27, 2008 10:55:46 AM

Ummm, what? If you think Beason is being moved anywhere you are smoking something. He is the MAN in the middle. With Fox and Hurney betting the teams future on this year, getting picks of value is pointless. They need players to play now. A guy like Dre Moore could have been in the DT rotation.

Posted by: Jake | Apr 27, 2008 10:56:03 AM

Are you people nuts? The Panthers are having a fantastic draft. With those last two picks all of the ESPN guys are saying that our rating should be A++. Maybe we took a couple of players over needs, but the value we have had at every pick is nothing short of amazing. We took Conner with #11 in the third, and people were thinking he was going to go in the middle of round 2. Take your head out of the sand Panther Fans, Hurney and Fox are doing great!

Posted by: CardiacCat | Apr 27, 2008 10:59:08 AM

"excellent value", Why on earth would you want to move Jon Beason back out to OLB!!? Makes zero sense, ZERO. He's a leader on defense, and should stay where he's at. He IS our future MLB.

Posted by: TheMike | Apr 27, 2008 10:59:28 AM

oh yeah, and dwayne jarrett.

Posted by: g | Apr 27, 2008 11:00:25 AM

I love everything so far except for the Connor pick. D-line needs help!

Posted by: Jake | Apr 27, 2008 11:00:47 AM

Overall, we have had a very good draft. To continue to have a good draft, we need trade back into the 3-4 round and pick up the DT we need. Preferably, Marcus Harrison or Dre Moore. With the addition of Connor, we have some linebackers that are expendable. Seward, Anderson, even Diggs. If we trade our 5th, Seward, and maybe Salley, we could get into the late 3rd early 4th. Aside from the expense of the Otah trade, we have brought in very good players that can be major contributors to our team next year.

He certainly is the man in the middle. But he also is the man on the outside. I'm not saying that they SHOULD move him, I'm saying that they COULD move him now. He is definitely a better OLB than Davis, right? Since Beason can dominate at both spots, wouldn't it be nice to have the best 3 LB's on the field? But the idea of switching to a 3-4 is intriguing. They definitely have the size with Kemo to do it...but it doesn't seem likely. We'll see what they do, but I still think they get a quality DT in the 5th. They don't need a starter right now, just a serviceable guy to put in the rotation who could eventually become a starter. They'll be fine.

Posted by: excellent value | Apr 27, 2008 11:02:36 AM

Beason was a beast in the middle for crying out loud. He was fourth in the league in total tackles and he didnt play full time till week 5. don't move him anywhere. Plus movis davis to safety would be counter productive bc he plays SS and thats where Chris Harris plays we still need DTs or even a DE. & we cant change to a 3-4 bc peppers isn't as good as a stand up linebacker bc he loses his quickness advantage over lineman

Posted by: Vernon | Apr 27, 2008 11:03:00 AM

If u go by everything the people on ESPN say u are more than CRAZY

Posted by: Vernon | Apr 27, 2008 11:04:02 AM

Conner was the best player available. Lets not forget the Panthers were planning on losing Seward anyway. It doesn't look like that's changed. He's definitely an upgrade. Seward proved he was a liability when Morgan was out.
