Minicamp afternoon notes

Odds 'n ends from the afternoon practice:

QB Jake Delhomme took a rest and didn't participate after throwing 34 passes in individual drills this morning.

OLB Na'il Diggs sat out all day with a mild ankle injury. DT Stephen Williams missed the practices with a strained pectoral muscle, suffered when he was lifting weights.

Rookie RB Jonathan Stewart and holdover DeAngelo Williams are getting acquainted quickly. They were laughing as they walked off the practice field together.

Sure looks like the plan is to play Julius Peppers at right defensive end. He worked there again this afternoon. Tyler Brayton, a free agent signee from Oakland, is lining up with the starters at left end, Peppers' position the past six seasons.

You get the sense that Muhsin Muhammad, not D.J. Hackett, should be the favorite to start at the wide receiver spot opposite Steve Smith. Delhomme was among the people raving about the impact of Muhammad's return after three seasons in Chicago.

Coach John Fox likes the look of the team after numerous offseason changes. He said this morning that the newcomers added "energy" to the team.

Guard Toniu Fonoti looks to be lean and in very good shape. He's said to weigh about 330 pounds, far less than when his career flamed out in San Diego and Atlanta a few years ago. He's still only 26, so there's plenty of time for him to revive his career.

It's VERY odd seeing Charles Godfrey, the Panthers' third-round pick, wearing Mike Minter's former jersey no. 30. Godfrey may just get tired of people telling him he has big shoes to fill.

Yes...I'm afraid I'm gonna need to see some visual proof to back up this report.

Seriously though...thanks for the update.

Is Minter's # up for consideration to be retired? Isn't he the franchise leader in tackles? Not to mention everything that he he has done off the field as well?

Minter's number should NOT be retired by the Panthers. You can't just go around retiring the numbers of players who played for the team their entire career but were just average players on the field. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy. I have his jersey, autograph, the whole deal, but he was an average player and retiring jerseys is for GREAT players, not decent players who are above average people.

#51 is the only number that should never be worn again for the Panthers, as of right now.

I agree with Al.Only GREAT players should have their jerseys retired.

What number did David Carr wear? They should definitely retire that one. In fact, they should bury it with a chicken foot and the eye of a newt.

hahaha yea david carr wht a card...but yea i think #30 should NOT be retired.

I don't think numbers should be retired in football. Not enough numbers to go around. Give 'em statues in front of the stadium.

I'm a big Moose fan > I hope he brings that attitude again to the young kids. While everyone talks run - I still believe if we go to the SuperBowl it will be because of our passing game.

Posted by: David Carr | May 3, 2008 4:22:57 AM

30 should be retired... that's all there is to it.

You don't retire the number of a good player. You retire the number of a hall of famer,

Posted by: Chris | May 3, 2008 10:19:01 AM

You retire the number of players that make a huge impact on your franchise. Minter made a huge impact on the Panthers. He was vital in the success of the team on the field. He was and is also a stand up guy who has made a huge impact in the community. Sam Mills was not an outstanding player, but he did make an impact on the team.

I think you retire the numbers of the greatest players in your franchise's history. That takes far more into account than on-field performance (although Minter and Rucker's ranks on our franchise leaders lists show they had plenty of that.) Minter and Rucker have always been known as much for their leadership on and off the field as their actual performance on it. Further, their dedication to this community is unsurpassed. For the players (and the MEN) they've been since they became Panthers, they deserve to have their numbers retired, or statues and Ring of Honor selections at the very least.

Ring of Honor selections I think are in order, but the Panthers are too young to retire the numbers of Minter or Rucker. They have been two extraordinary players off the field, but only good players on it. If we retire their jerseys don't you think we'd be obligated to retire Delhomme's, Smith's, and Pepper's? We have to be weary about whose jersey we retire because there are plenty of years to come.

Posted by: Gabe HDP | May 3, 2008 8:06:36 PM

Delhomme's and Smith's, certainly, if they continue their level of play until retirement without leaving. Peppers has not shown enough to me in the leadership or community involvement areas to merit it.

Posted by: Michael Procton | May 4, 2008 10:14:30 AM

Peppers went to Carolina. I failed out of Carolina. Therefore, I hate Peppers and all things Carolina.

Number 30 should not b retired..end of story..I think charles godfrey is going 2 b a good player at free safety..........Procton.."I hate everything carolina"...why r u up here then..????? Get a life my dude..ur a lame.....I happy 2 c muse back wit da panthers..we now have weapons 2 throw 2 besides smitty....peppers is da best player that we have..point blank...if he wants 2 b..simple is dat....
