Moore tries to get past 'Civil War'

0506mattmoore    Down south, we're used to football rivalries like Clemson-South Carolina, Florida-Georgia, Alabama-Auburn.
But almost 3,000 miles away in the Pacific northwest, there's something Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Moore notes is officially (well, sort of) called "The Civil War" -- Oregon vs. Oregon State.
"Huge," said Moore. "Literally, the state is divided. There's no pro team up there. Little kids grow up wanting to be a Duck or a Beaver."
Moore (right) played for the Beavers, Oregon State. He was on the winning side his senior year, but just barely (30-28) because of a three-touchdown performance by Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart.
"He almost ruined the Civil War game for me," said Moore.
Now, they're teammates. Moore started the final three games for the Panthers last season as an undrafted rookie and team officials chose Stewart with the 13th pick in last month's draft.
"I think he's phenomenal," Moore said of Stewart. "He runs hard and he seems like a smart guy."
0506stewartmug_2     Moore said he's glad to have two Ducks, Stewart (left) and seventh-round offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, join him in Carolina.
"I love it," said Moore. "Getting to play against them, you know that they're good players.
"All that college stuff is over now. We might talk a little trash here and there, but it's good fun."
We'll have more from Moore in an article in the Observer and online Tuesday.

I'm glad that they appear to be grooming Moore as the successor to Jake instead of signing a vet or drafting a qb

Moore is our next guy. He has that "it" quality thts hard to find in QB's.

We actually have 2 good candidates in Basanez and Moore. Only problem is B has been hurt some, so we really haven't been able to see what he is capable of. But at least we know Moore has a lot of potential after his flashes late last year.

While I understand everyone wants to see the logo on the 50, why continue to post links to a site that forces you to a page to "make a donation"? What gives?

Posted by: SPAM Hater | May 5, 2008 11:40:08 AM

We need the outline of both Carolinas at midfield, much like UNC has at midcourt in the Dean Dome. Would be awesome, and show that it is the CAROLINA Panthers, not just NC.

Posted by: Jay | May 5, 2008 11:41:33 AM

damn man, forget about the logo

Posted by: matt | May 5, 2008 11:46:56 AM

I'm all for the Panther logo at midfield. That is years overdue!

Posted by: J Thomas | May 5, 2008 11:59:07 AM

I don't care if they have the NFL logo, Panthers logo or a map of the two Carolinas on the field.
Just please, please, please don't ever let it get to the point where some danged advertiser gets his company logo on the field.

And, remember UNC Coach Roy Williams being furious over players slipping on an NCAA decal stuck on the hardwood floor at the regionals?
Not only was it a health hazard, but it raised public awareness about putting logos where they don't belong.
But the issue will come again at some point. Advertising dollars are just so hard for owners to ignore.

Posted by: Air Borden | May 5, 2008 12:06:46 PM

Can't we just leave S.C. out of it and pretend it doesn't exist?

Posted by: jeff | May 5, 2008 1:51:19 PM

Sure, go ahead and leave out SC. Then Jerry will move the team to Columbia, because that's where he wanted it in the first place. Dumbass.

Posted by: Robert | May 5, 2008 1:53:42 PM

Actually, they should be called the CHARLOTTE Panthers.

Posted by: Pat Mccrory | May 5, 2008 2:14:33 PM

Moore is that dude... I like kid

Posted by: OWWWWWWWW | May 5, 2008 3:45:35 PM

I always hear JR talk about how he has the NFL logo at the 50 out of respect to the league for giving him a team or whatever. I doubt he'll put the panthers logo or the outline of the carolinas or anything else for that matter.

Posted by: BronxMike | May 5, 2008 6:22:13 PM

Too bad Fox didn't start Moore until the season was lost last year. I would have liked to have seen how he played for more than a few games.

Posted by: matt | May 5, 2008 7:12:45 PM

it SHOULD have been the Charlotte Panthers all along...the Carolina crap was total baloney from the beginning...the vast majority of the fans are from Metro Charlotte. Carolina Panthers is up there with the Flag boys, the crappy wife-approved pep song, the "no banners or signs" rule, the "shirts on" rule..and a bunch of other "lame-o" bad decisions made the Richardsons...

Posted by: bigMike | May 5, 2008 7:19:23 PM

Well, Matt, the team only scored 13 points in the only two real games he played. Unless he had been playing against Arizona instead of Vinny, that's a loss every week before he got his first start.

Posted by: Michael Procton | May 5, 2008 7:20:16 PM

Thats what he is saying, that there wasn't enough time to get a full reading on Moore, he did good in some games and not very good against one of the best in the league in Dallas, so its hard to get a great evaluation based on the fact we had no running game and the fact we played a very good Dallas team and a Bucs team resting most starters, and a very overrated playoff team in Seattle. I can certainly understand Fox's reluctancy not to start Moore earlier in the season, but the curiosity is still here for the fans to know how Moore would have done given a few extra chances.

Posted by: matt | May 5, 2008 7:32:50 PM

Another note I can add to this...Hanging out at minicamp Friday I saw Dante Rosario, another ex-Duck walking out with Matt Moore after practice. Figuring Dante must really enjoy having teammates join him in Carolina,
I asked Dante what he thought about having all these ducks around. He said, "We are going to have a reunion!". Matt Moore laughed and shouted "And that's not a good thing!" Everyone around me recognized the apparent reference to his Beaver pedigree and laughed. He seems to really get along with his fellow west coast adversaries and seems to have a good time with it. Good character guy and he has some real talent, although I think Jake has the better arm now after the surgery... two cents from a fan.

Posted by: Matthew | May 5, 2008 9:15:32 PM

Everyone, Moore will not be the 2nd string QB, Brett Basanez, has a stronger arm, and he is more mobile. And he has a better grasp of the offense.. Matt Moore 5 yrs from now, might be the 2nd string... Matt Moore got a break, since Basanez got hurt also last year.

Posted by: Catsnmbr1fan | May 5, 2008 9:28:25 PM

Big Mike,,every year there is one person that bashes the Richardson's for the "shirts on" rule.. Please before you start, know a little about what you are saying.. That is a City of Charlotte Law..!! so STOP the BS.. you can't have your shirt off at ANY event in the City of Charlotte..Wait until we get BaseBall UpTown, Same Law, will apply.. !!!!

Posted by: Catsnmbr1fan | May 5, 2008 9:36:01 PM

Jay, the Carolina Panthers "Panther" picture on their Helmets is the NC and SC symbol, if you turn the Panther emblem over it represents both NC and SC..that is the way it was designed..

Posted by: Catsnmbr1fan | May 5, 2008 9:40:26 PM

It's simply ridiculous for someone to say that the team should be called the Charlotte Panthers, or to try and imply that most of the fans are actually in the Charlotte area. There are Panther fans all across both Carolinas. I know tons of Panther fans here in Columbia, SC. Jerry Richardson himself is from SC, so don't try and tell me that he didn't intend the team to represent both states.

Now, I will say that the majority of the fair weather, leave at half-time fans, are probably from the Charlotte area. They show up at the stadium on Sundays to make their little social appearance, and head out in the 3rd quarter after they're done sipping wine.

Posted by: SCpantherfan | May 5, 2008 10:22:24 PM

I get a chubby when I start bashing Matt Moore. Its my favorite thing to do, I love bashing Panthers. They all suck except for Jake, David Carr, Deshaun Foster, and Dan Morgan.

Matt Moore is just so cute, and he causes conflict inside me, with my inner woman. I try to cover it up by talking shit about him every chance I get, but I'm really attracted to him.

Posted by: Michael the Procton | May 6, 2008 4:05:14 AM

Procton you are disgusting, and weird.

Procton has a 'Civil War' every morning when he wakes up...with his 'inner woman' as he says. Just unleash it Procton, its ok dude.

Is that why you wear the lipstick everyone talks about? That picture of you in the singing group is great, not sure why you started spreading that around but ok.

Posted by: Steve | May 6, 2008 4:12:06 AM

I would hope that Matt Moore would have been drafted somewhere in rounds 4-7. At least before QB's Tyler Thigpen, Jeff Rowe, and possibly Jordan Palmer. He most deffinately would have been drafted before Mr. Irrelevant, Ramzee Robinson.

Posted by: rhackney | May 6, 2008 8:43:59 AM

Why is everyone so stuck on this irrelevant issue of the emblem that is displayed at midfield? That has absolutely nothing to do with the way the game is played. It's paint...not some magical answer to why the Panthers are consistently BAD at home. If you want BofA stadium to represent a HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE for the Panthers then cheer for them while they're there.

Keep the NFL logo, and continue to contribute to the greater good of what is a great athletic league. On the flip-side of JR's non-promotional idea for midfield, what if he delves into "ultra-super self promotion mode" and puts a Panther eatin some delicious Bojangles chicken at the 50? Why not? A friendly reminder that you can grab a 2 piece meal and some dirty rice just a few easy steps from your seat...

Posted by: Panter: The Logo | May 6, 2008 1:20:44 PM

Procton who cares if they scored 13 points. It does not matter if you score 6 or 56 come Monday it is a win. You would not know anything about winning or work ethic. The Rook was 2-1 as a starter.

Posted by: Jeff | May 6, 2008 1:59:11 PM

Jeff, you wouldn't understand, but nor would I expect you to. I'm so far over your head its not even funny, its pathetic actually. Its like I'm in another stratosphere and you are a little ant.

Given a chance David Carr could have been a good, no, a great, quarterback here. I hate Matt Moore for taking that away from him. It pisses me off so bad and I'm never going to stop telling everyone how bad Moore sucks, no matter how good he ends up being. Rookie or not, I expect more and although he may live up to the coaches standards, he doesn't mine. David Carr is the 2nd best option behind Jake this team has ever seen, and it was sad the day we gave up on him.

Posted by: Michael Procton | May 6, 2008 4:01:22 PM

So under your analyis if Peyton Manning has a poor game and they win 10-7 he should not get credit for the win as the starting QB. you do not get it do you. Carr had his chances and he blew it how many chances did he need

Posted by: Jeff | May 6, 2008 5:49:14 PM

Procton 2-1 was Moore's record deal with it. What did you learn at UNC before you flunked out?

Posted by: sam | May 6, 2008 5:51:45 PM

Jeff, Peyton Manning does not get credit for ANY win. Wins in all sports (except baseball and softball) are TEAM stats. The PANTHERS were 2-1 in Moore's starts, but ANY QB could have won the games he did against a Seattle team that was totally shut down by the defense and a Tampa Bay team that was resting most of the players on their two-deep.

Posted by: Michael Procton | May 6, 2008 5:55:53 PM

Anybody but David Carr could get the win. So when did you learn about teamwork?, also Seattle was a playoff team remember that? So I guess individual stats do not matter than why do we have the pro bowl and incentive based contracts. That maybe over your head though

Posted by: John | May 6, 2008 6:39:08 PM

Procton you are right the team gets the win but a QB has a starting winning % and Moore was 2-1 and 1 win was against Seattle a playoff team. I guess under your analysis we should never give Tom Brady credit for his SB MVP'S

Posted by: Ted | May 6, 2008 6:44:18 PM

I didn't at any point suggest stats didn't matter, simply that wins are credited to the team in football, not any player. But, ok, fine, I'll humor you. Let's make it about stats. Moore had a QB rating of below 70; the league average is 83.5. His 3:5 TD:INT ratio is subpar (particularly considering that it's 1:4 outside of the pseudo-preseason game against TB.) He did not lead the team to more than one TD drive against a team playing its starters. I guess you SHOULD hang your hat on Matt Moore's "wins", since his stats suck.

Oh, and Ted...when was the last time Matt Moore was MVP of anything? The UCLA scout team when he couldn't beat out Drew freaking Olson?

Posted by: Michael Procton | May 6, 2008 8:21:09 PM

Sometimes stats aren't everything. I really don't care how we win as long as we win. At one point, someone looked at David Carr's stats and said I bet this guy will be good at Quarterback. That led him to be the No. 1 Draft pick. Also, at some point people looked at Tom Brady's stats and said he's ok I guess we will spend a 6th round pick on him and see what happens. He did not come in on Day One and take the job from Drew Bledsoe. The Patriots were patient enough and waited for things to play out. I think it worked in his favor. You can make stats to tell any kind of story you want. But there is no stat for Heart, Determination, and will to win. Moore may or may not be the future, but there is no reason to doubt him based off three games as a rookie QB in which he one 2 out of the 3.

Posted by: cheerman23 | May 7, 2008 12:41:07 AM

Noone said Moore is the future maybe in 2 years. He was 2-1 1 win against a playoff team and unlike Carr he will play inthe league this year. Also can you remember Brad Johnson former SB MVP who was also2nd sting in college. COMPRENDE OR DO THEY NOT HAVE THAT CLASS AT GTI

Posted by: Ted | May 7, 2008 4:09:47 AM

Procton Moore may or may not be the QB of the future that was what everyone was stating. As far as Olson many players are highly regarded out of college and do not make it Ronald Curry top QB for example Get over it Carr was not the man

Posted by: James | May 7, 2008 4:29:43 AM

Procton: David Carr was terrible. If Jake's arm holds up we are golden. If not then Moore is a great choice for his back-up. Adios Mr. Carr.

Posted by: Tim | May 7, 2008 5:43:04 AM

procton is really david carr.

Posted by: watchdoggin | May 7, 2008 5:54:00 AM

I never realized how crazy you are until i just read your rant about hating moore and how much you loved carr. you really are insane!
i just thought you were a passionate panther fan but you dont care about the team at all.
you are a very troubled person. you really need to get out of moms basement and seek professional help, you sick twisted wreck. GO Moore!

Posted by: ray | May 7, 2008 8:33:24 AM

Ray, that wasn't me. And I'm not in a basement. Until the Observer fixes this TERRIBLE posting system, however, things like that will continue to happen. And yes, I do care about the team. That's why I have reasonable, logical things to say, whereas all you can do is call people "insane." Strong...really shows how much you like the team.

Posted by: Michael Procton | May 7, 2008 10:29:03 AM

i apologize.

Posted by: ray | May 7, 2008 12:09:06 PM

I thought Moore had a 86.5 rating as a starter.

Posted by: rayray | May 7, 2008 1:08:25 PM

And I'm sure he had a 124.6 on third downs with less than three yards to go against teams from south of the mason-dixon line. Don't look at splits, particularly given that one of those starts was a glorified preseason game.

Posted by: Michael Procton | May 7, 2008 2:50:19 PM

And I am sure your boy David Carr would have done a better job. What is your problem? with Moore. Nobody has said he is ready to be a starter but he is ready to come in and contribute. If Jake goes down extended time it is bye bye playoffs. He is much more ready than David Carr ever was

Posted by: James | May 7, 2008 3:00:54 PM

You're wrong, James. I've seen DOZENS of people advocating that Moore start right now over Delhomme. Yes...we're out of the playoffs if Jake goes down. So what's tha point of all our adoration for a backup who CAN'T take us to the playoffs? Reminds me a lot of how people wanted Chris Weinke on the field over Delhomme, too.

Posted by: Michael Procton | May 7, 2008 4:20:17 PM

I would so let David Carr check my oil with his magic gloves. I love that guy.

Posted by: Michael Procton | May 8, 2008 4:19:04 AM

Whoa, Procton, although I see your point about "splits", it also seems you like to parse stats more than most. Is there any aspect of Moore's performance you can find as good? Decent? A good find as an undrafted rook? I'm with you, Delhomme is the man, but cool it on Moore.

Posted by: rayray | May 8, 2008 2:48:31 PM

Moore showed decent poise and ok accuracy on short passes. Neither of those things suggests that he should be our starter right now. He needs to work on his deep ball accuracy, mobility, decision-making, and overall field awareness to be anywhere close to that.

Posted by: Michael Procton | May 8, 2008 7:35:59 PM

Im happy da teammates r getting along..keep doin ur thing panthers...u guys argue 2 much...obviously proton doesn't believe..in da david car situation ..he jus says those things 2 get attention..and yall feed into it everytime...I gotta give it up 2 u procton...lol

Posted by: bennyfrankz | May 8, 2008 11:12:33 PM

Procton, absolutely. All those aspects of Moore's game need to be worked on, as would any rookie's or 2nd year player, especially QB. If Jake is not his old self or better this coming season we're in for another mediocre outing. Has some of the fan's early anointing of Moore caused your backlash against him? Wouldn't we rather have a young QB on the roster that has least shown poise and accuracy?

Posted by: rayray | May 9, 2008 6:52:50 AM

Hold up now! Remember that Matt Moore took us 2-1 as a starter. He's a pretty good quarterback that has a lot of talent. Such a pity he wasn't drafted, but good luck for us indeed!

I say give him time to develop! The best quarterbacks in this game are the QB's whom are allowed to sit on the sidelines for two or three years and develop their technique and get used to the business that is the NFL.

Let Jake have his game for now. Who knows? There might be one last Superbowl run left in him. We're a playoff team irreguardless of whether Jake goes down or not with Matt Moore in the backround.

Posted by: Shawn | May 9, 2008 6:55:17 AM

Ray, I'm much higher on Bret Basanez as an overall QB prospect. He was one of the most productive college QBs in history, and has better physical tools as far as I'm concerned. I'm frustrated, yes, that the team's success--rather than Moore's actual play--has led to his anointment as QB-in-waiting. I'm also frustrated that people totally discount his terrible play in the games he didn't start. The fact that a game is lost is no excuse to just chuck it up.

Posted by: Michael Procton | May 9, 2008 8:29:55 AM

....just as my man Jake did at times ("just chuck it up"). However there's no way we can throw Moore's name in as the "next" yet; I'm also sick of hearing about the next guy, Weinke, Carr, whoever, who is supposed to supplant Delhomme. As for Baz, we'll see. I hope he is someone who can stay in the mix, as obviously I want ALL of the QBs to have good pre-camps and training camps.
