Panthers play the numbers game

When Charles Chandler blogged that new Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart, who was wearing No.29 in minicamp, was given the No.28 he favored by backup safety Quinton Teal, it got me to thinking.  We had already heard that veteran wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad, who had been wearing 87 his whole career, was given it for free by third-year tight end Jeff King, who then switched to 47.

Now, in this all-business day and age it has become something of a tradition for athletes to sell their numbers to teammates who want them for one reason or another. And Muhammad and Stewart, who each make considerably more than the guys who gave them the numbers, could have afforded to pay.

But there's more going on here than that; the fact that the two players freely gave the numbers has to be a boost for team chemistry; after all, they are just numbers, and if key players are going to be more happy in them, why not keep everyone in a positive frame of mind?

I applaud Teal and King; although I probably would have held out for at least a Rolex.

By the way, some other new numbers you may not be familiar with include offensive tackle Jeff Otah (79), defensive tackle Darwin Walker (93, Mike Rucker's old number), DT Ian Scott (94), linebacker Landon Johnson (54), wide receiver D.J. Hackett (18), defensive end Tyler Brayton (96), cornerback Charles Godfrey (30, Mike Minter's old number), linebacker Dan Connor (44) and guards Keydrick Vincent (68), Toniu Fonoti (77, Kris Jenkins' old number) and Milford Brown (61).

#18 is Drew Carter's old number

Posted by: Ralph | May 8, 2008 8:04:44 AM

It will be really nice to see #18 run really fast and actually catch the ball this season.....

Posted by: Evan | May 8, 2008 8:15:46 AM

same thing for a #30

Posted by: matt | May 8, 2008 8:24:30 AM

agreed

Posted by: wes | May 8, 2008 9:53:56 AM

Uh oh. Another LB named Dan with 44...

Posted by: jperry | May 8, 2008 10:10:56 AM

I'm pretty sure Morgan was #55, not #44.

Posted by: Judd | May 8, 2008 10:20:30 AM

and jperry, who was the other LB named Dan w// #44

Posted by: matt | May 8, 2008 10:41:14 AM

You are correct, Morgan was #55

Posted by: johnd992 | May 8, 2008 10:41:49 AM

Dan Morgan wore 44 @ Miami

Posted by: E-rupt | May 8, 2008 12:17:21 PM

Dan Morgan is #52 now, with the Saints. Those guys aren't quite as team-oriented as the Cats, apparently.

I also found that Carter, Carr, and Jenkins have their old Panthers #'s; but Keary Colbert is now #13 (Raiders); and Fumbling Foster is #29 (Niners).

Posted by: Fat Male Panther Fan | May 8, 2008 1:03:07 PM

I meant Broncos for Colbert...

All for anything that can improve team chemistry. Not really sure how superstitions relate to that general area? I know happy players play better, but, I have boxes of old Jerseys' and very few have the same number. But that's just me. For King and Teal, it was no big deal. For Moose and Stew, is was. Go figure.

As always, Go CATS!

I hear you, "Rolex!" I'll be watchin' you. ;) BTW, thanks for responding to my email.

Now I get it. The reason the Panthers signed Fonoti was so they didn't have to waste the custom made #77 XXXXXXXXXL jersey from Mr. Jenkins.

Who wants to watch me dance, dance, dance in the Niners backfield this season? Hopscotch! Dancing! I love to dance around and lose yards.
I'm afraid I won't get as many chances to fumble as last year. But don't worry, I'll find a way to mysteriously fumble the ball off my leg despite no one hitting me.
And how does 1.9 yards per carry sound? I was really overachieving with that pathetic average I had last year.

Joe, I'm deleting them because they're spam. If you put them in every post, that's all I can consider them. I delete only spam and offensive content or language. I even look the other way on faulty logic. Start a topic in the forum and have at it, I don't care. Bump it to the top every 15 minutes. But don't clutter the blogs with the petition. Thanks.

Fans 4 Logo

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/fans4thelogo/index.html

get the word out folks.

We have emailed every sports writer at the Observer. As of right now we have not recieved any feedback.

Until we do and we fans who believe in this have a way to get our voice heard we will continue to blog.

Darrin Gantt at the Herald put up a link and even cracked some jokes at us. Either way he helped us get the word out. We have not bothered him since.

Its that simple.

The fans want to be heard. Thats all.

This is not Spam, and if anything its sensorship and violation of freedom of speech....

word out about what?

Posted by: Christian | May 8, 2008 9:35:15 PM

"Chemistry is a class you take in High School"- Jim Leyland

Bottom line, just go out there, play hard, and give us 11 win guys...Go Cats!!!

Must be a slow news day, huh? This is a joke of an article. Are you a journalist or a 4th grader?

Posted by: Reader | May 9, 2008 6:37:38 AM

I think I'm going to start a petition to band Joe from every message board on the internet. He does this (and ruins good natured Panther banter) at other sites as well. We all get it, your passionate, you don't think your voice is being heard. I think your idea is good, but do this the right way dude. Be considerate, and don't pirate every thread. You'll ultimately hurt yourself, and your cause, more than you'll help.

will putting the panthers logo on the field create homefield advantage? i doubt it... b/c the advantage is created by the fans, not athetics.

anyways, i know that a few years ago the rule was changed to allow WRs to wear numbers 11-19 b/c 80-89 were starting to become rare. when did the rule change for TE's? The only other TE i know that wears a non-80 number is chris cooley of the redskins. does anyone know when the rule was changed?

Posted by: chris norman | May 9, 2008 8:11:28 AM

Mike Persinger,

Why don't you guys just start a blog with a link to the petition and a very short write up about how if you want the logo on midfield sign the petition. Then you can lock the thread and allow no comments like you have done in the past and then hopefully this guy will stop pirating all threads and more importantly we get the word out the right way about this petition. I love the idea so in my opinion this is a way you guys could help us fans out without a lot of effort.

Chris, others have (correctly) noted that Dallas Clark wears a number in the 40s, and there are a few other minor players who fit in the same category (Sean McHugh-DET, Delanie Walker-SF.) I'm pretty sure the way it goes is you're supposed to fill up your 80s first (the Panthers don't have an 86, though), then any of your WRs or TEs can use the 10s (WRs get most of these) or the 40s (these mostly go to TE/H-back/FB types, but also can go to DBs or linebackers.) The league has gotten a lot less restrictive on this rule, though, in recent years. Reggie Bush's attempt to use his college #5 (single digits are for QBs and K/Ps) was one of the only recent examples where the NFL actually balked. I got bashed for saying it, but I agree that TEs wearing non-80s numbers makes it look very college-esque.

It's not an article, "Reader," it's a blog post. Simple as that.

This is not Spam, and if anything its sensorship and violation of freedom of speech....

Joe, first of all, you can't even spell 'censorship', much less define it. Second, it isn't violation of freedom of speech because that only applies to the government and public places. This blog belongs to the Observer and they can decide what they want to have posted here.

I think just about everyone is behind your petition, but dang, dude, don't be a freaking pest or you hurt your cause.

LOL, that's the smartest "idiot" I think I've ever heard! :-)
