Sad News
Former Panthers center Curtis Whitley has died. His family learned today that he had been found dead in Texas, where he was living. Two family members said they were still awaiting details on his cause of death.
Whitley, a Smithfield native and former Clemson player, played for the Panthers in 1995 and '96. He started 24 games before getting suspended for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The Panthers later released him and he resurfaced with the Oakland Raiders in 1997.
Whitley's 39th birthday was Saturday.

My heart goes out to his family and friends. It's hard to believe someone so young leaves us so early in their life. I have fond memories of his time with the team.GBU.

Sounds like a sweet and sincere sentiment, Patrick. It's a shame it's in code.

Sorry to see a Clemson boy die. Plus he was a Panther. Double bad.

Sorry. I feel horrible for writing that. Just find minimizing God offensive. Sorry.

wow...good job syrpis. I'm sure your mother is proud!!God Bless The entire Whitley family and God Bless SYRPIS for he knows not what he does.

SYRPIS, this makes me think that you don't think about what you say. That is a tragedy in a small way to your team. I don't care if you don't know him. Have some respect. Love to the family of Curtis. Do you think about what you write when you talk about the Panthers...... I thought so before but now I know

No big deal Syrpis, because I can tolerate you more than the Proctologist, but for some reason (even though you dont appear to know) I think GBU = God Bless You. However I could be wrong , but unlike the proctologist I will admit I think I can be wrong.
None-the-less it sucks to see a former Tiger and Panther pass away espically in a isht hole like Texas.
May the next generation of Tigers fill his place as a Panther.

My comment was heart felt....Receive it or don't. It was meant for friends and family of Curtis, because I have also lost people in my life and God's blessing is needed for the pain and loss they feel.(that I too feel.)

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Whitley family.

Good idea, Patrick...the first place they went was probably "Inside the Panthers" on charlotte.com.

Wow, Procton, your joke was utterly without class. You post a lot on here, any interest in raising the level of discourse?

Wow....??? Wow! Just for the record, I thought he was saying God be with you. But that just proves my point. Moreover, is it respectful to say "Happy Holidays" to a Christian... or GBU for that matter!? BCE, Happy Holiday, GBU... it's all the same mentality to me. If you want to pay your respects, then you should do it properly by saying what you mean. Furthermore, keep it traditional if you can so that there is no misunderstanding.
That being said, I immediately regreted posting that message because it did seam disrespectful to the family of the one who has passed. That was not my intention at all. My sincerest apologies.

I am best friends with some of Curtis' family here in NC and they are reading these blogs because there are lots of people sending them sincere thoughts of sympathy. Just remember that before you post.

Haley, it is truly sad that at such a solemn time as this, many people just do not get it! Take heart in the fact that the vast majority do wish you and your entire family Gods speed. May your entire family recieve all the love and support, you so richly deserve, in your time of sorrow and need. Goodbye Chris, and thank you.
Sincerely,
Michael Sherwood
