Sat. afternoon minicamp notes

  • The last guy off the practice field was Jordan Gross, who stayed late to work on the footwork he'll need playing left tackle instead of right tackle. As for his contract negotiations, Gross said he and the Panthers weren't way far apart, but it was obviously enough to keep a deal from getting done. He wanted more than the team offered. He said that wouldn't affect him when he's got his playing cleats on. But asked how he avoided taking it personally, he said kicker John Kasay advised him that football players have to wear different hats -- one for the field, one for business. Plus, Gross said he considered it an honor that the Panthers put the franchise tag on him. That way, he knows the team wants him.
  • Wide receiver Jason Carter put on a show late in the practice. He caught a short pass and zig-zagged his way through the secondary, then made a dramatic one-handed grab in the end zone on the final play of the practice. After the one-hander, offensive tackle Jeremy Bridges ran over and gave Carter a high-flying chest bump. Carter's a prospect, no doubt about it. It'll be hard to make the Panthers' roster, but the young man can play.
  • Just like Friday, quarterback Jake Delhomme threw some in the morning, but rested in the afternoon.
  • Julius Peppers has worked exclusively at right defensive end in the four practices of the minicamp, with Tyler Brayton at left end.

I know Gross will work his butt off to make sure he plays as well as possible. After all he is a true pro. My question is; if Otah played LT in college, why can't he play LT now? Or at least give him the opportunity to earn the spot. I know you want to put Otah in a position to excel, and not ruin his confindence. But why make two players learn new positions, when they don't neccesarily need to?!! As always GO CATS!

Also, just wondering how Pep is going to do over on the right side? Somethimes change is good. And after last year, maybe the change will do Pep good. Let's hope anyway, cuz we need a productive Pep. As always GO CATS!

Hub -- Otah is MUCH better off at RT with the Panthers who can be a right-handed power running team up his back, playing to his strength at a run blocker. On pass plays, both play action and the experience of having Otah drive them will have DEs slowing up, plus you can chip the DE with the back you fake to -- just makes tons of sense, especially when you consider you are not asking a rookie to protect Jake's blind side at LT.

I've mentioned this a few times before: The Panthers do Gross a huge disservice by moving him. He hasn't played the same position two years in a row EVER since becoming a Panther. He's better on the left, we know that, he knows that, I'd prefer to leave him there. The fact that we've moved Gross so much also means the team hasn't had the same o-line two years in a row. How can we expect great things from a line that is in constant upheaval?

Posted by: janitordan | May 3, 2008 2:42:06 PM

The last time Jordan Gross and Travelle Wharton were teamed up on the left side, Nick Goings almost ran for 1000 yards. I think it will work out just fine.

Billy & JAT, good points.

Like most, I am extremely optimistic about the upcoming season. We have a bigger, hopefully more physical team. We know about the OL and Stewart, but also Moose and Hackett give us more size and presence. We still have play-makers/big play guys in Smitty and D Will.

LT - Gross [6'4" 300lbs]
LG - Wharton [6'4" 312lbs]
C - Kalil [6'2" 295lbs]
RG - Vincent [6'5" 325lbs]
RT - Otah [6'6" 324lbs]

As far as issues about pass pro consider what JAT said above. Having big tough guys hitting defenses in the mouth will wear them down physically, plus slow them up in play-action mentally. Not to mention rest our own D.

I expect our special teams to be much improved as well. We have great depth at LB and CB, 2 key positions in ST. We also added ST standouts in FS Holt [who can block kicks well], and K Lloyd who will give us many more touch-backs.

We are looking good in all 3 phases of the game. My 2 questions are pass rush and Delhomme's health. I can give positive and negative reasons for each, but we will just have to wait and see.

Go Panthers!

WP -- I don't know about you, but Kalil looks to me to be the most unproven of that group, at times last year at G he was just physically overwhelmed. I hope that comfort levelat C and the act of snapping the ball gets him out of the blocks quicker, not to mention that he has a ton of responsibility for line calls.

Everyone says he has all the tools, let's hope he can put it all together.

Hey I would like to know how Dwayne Jarrett is doing in minicamp so could you guys include some information on him in your next post please? Oh and no I am not intrested in the DUI charges just want to know if he look's to have finally learned the playbook and is he getting any playing time at all when the 1st team is practicing?
Thanks!

Just viewed the slide show for mini-camp, there are 2 pics of Ryne, none for Jarrett. Chandlers blog mentions Carter, but no Jarrett. Would be nice to hear if Jarrett has stepped up yet. Personally, I would prefer Ryne stepping up, he reminds me a whole lot of Smitty. By the way, one of the pics I saw had Ryne juking Harris. Signs of things to come? Or just wishful thinking? As always GO CATS!

woot go panthers

Nice to see a smart conversation about football for a change.

Posted by: Jim | May 3, 2008 6:27:09 PM

Anybody else notice that the 2 biggest guys on the roster- Fonoti and Kemoeatu- are both Hawaiians? Man, they HAVE to have a nickname!

Posted by: CoastalCat | May 3, 2008 8:10:34 PM

I looked at the pics on Yahoo and they showed something very welcome. Has anyone seen Peppers arms? They look twice as big as last years. They said he lost some weight last year well it looks like he gained it back, all muscle.

Posted by: capfolly | May 3, 2008 9:45:20 PM

Jordan Gross can eat a dick. He's not worth nearly as much as he thinks he is. He'll be a bust on the left side this year and the Panthers will finally be rid of him.

Posted by: Harney Ptaley | May 4, 2008 6:02:18 AM

I worry about Peppers. If the coaches will just let him go after the QB every play maybe he will come back - but I'm afraid his heart isn't into the game anymore.

Posted by: kelso | May 4, 2008 6:13:06 AM

Negative people suck.

Posted by: Roger | May 4, 2008 9:58:00 AM

We have great depth at CB? Really? After our top three, we're ridiculously weak. Ricardo Colclough or Dante Wesley seeing a lot of time in base or nickel packages would be a problem.

ESW, Jarrett has supposedly been catching everything thrown his way. He's looked good.

kelso, if coaches let Peppers go after the QB every play, he'll continue to do just what he's done in the past. He'll try one move, and then give up if it doesn't work. I'll paraphrase and say insanity is watching the same thing and expecting different results. If millions of dollars, a spot on his hometown team, and the love and adoration of thousands of fans aren't enough to get Peppers' heart "into the game", then I don't know what ever could be.

Mr. Procton

What team goes more than 3 deep at CB?

Posted by: Catturd | May 4, 2008 10:13:52 AM

Id like to add that Geoff Hangartner is a pretty solid Center if needed. Ive always liked Hangartner and think he is a viable option for this offensive line at any spot except Tackle, wish I could say the same for Evan Mathis.

Posted by: Ghost of Sparta | May 4, 2008 11:05:31 AM

Will

Khalil, that was at G. Now he's back to his natural position at C. Plus he was a rookie. If you seen the last game, he was responsible for a few holes being opened for D.Will, especially the last TD play

I guarantee he will open holes

Posted by: Makaveli | May 4, 2008 5:37:15 PM

catturd, I go three deep in bung hole.

Posted by: Michael the Proctologist | May 4, 2008 9:41:58 PM

I wouldn't brag about only 3 if I were you

Posted by: catturd | May 5, 2008 3:12:00 AM

Theres about 25 teams that would love to have 3 starting calibre corners, plus godfrey is a corner and colclough , wesley and deloatch have been around.

Posted by: ray | May 5, 2008 8:04:07 AM

It was a good move 2 move gross 2 LT 2 protect dels blindside...I think our O line is comin 2gether...as far as movin peppers 2 rde I think it doesn't matter...I don't think u have 2 move him because he has 1 bad yr...besides in some situations lasr yr pep lined up on da right side it didn't make a difference..da problem is da otha DE we haven't had a compliment on da otherside scince 03" when rucker was in his prime...brayton is not da answer...charles johnson.??? What was da point in drafting him..??? We didn't address dat position..in a draft dat was deep with DE's hope it doesn't comeback on us...

Someone on tv made a good point that pressures are more important than sacks, and with walker and ian scott ,who can push the pocket into the q.b s face,i think we will get a lot more pressure and sacks.
I thought justin tuck should have been super bowl m.v.p cause he consistently collapsed the pocket and strahan and umiyora just cleaned up.
