Holt bound for Hall of Fame, Panthers too?
I wrote in today's Charlotte Observer about St. Louis wide receiver Torry Holt's interest in playing with his brother Terrence on the Panthers when his Rams' contract expires in two years, but space difficulties (dang that triple-overtime hockey!) squeezed some of the story's background out of the piece.
What also bears mentioning is that Holt turns 31 Thursday, meaning that he would be 33 when he would become available to Carolina. At that point, the Panthers would have to decide if he would still be effective enough to help them, and if he was a priority need at that point.
That said, keep in mind that Holt is a future Hall of Fame wideout. He's played nine years with St. Louis since starring at N.C. State, and has compiled at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of the past
eight seasons. He has 71 career TD catches.
That means, given Holt's obvious interest in finishing his career with Carolina, the Panthers would have to give such a scenario strong consideration.
Hackett back
Today's OTA workout behind Bank of America Stadium was largely uneventful, although it was marked by the return to practice of wide receiver D.J. Hackett, who had missed the past two workouts with a
sore knee.

I'm more concerned about Hackett coming back than Holt coming here in a few years. The interesting thing is that Moose's contract would be up by then as well. Either way there are too many elements between now and then to even merit serious conversation on the subject. If it were this season, then we could talk. Still, it would be nice to see Holt line up accross from Smitty, assuming Holt is still productive and Smitty hasn't declined by then (I do not think he will, but 2 years is a long time).

As a State fan this is something that I always wanted to see, unfortunately it seems it would come after Holt has passed his prime. I would still love to see the brothers' Holt retire here.

If you consider that Holt's former-teammate Ricky Proehl played 16 total seasons in the NFL (a rarity for a WR) and he was drafted in 1990...and, meanwhile, Torry Holt was only drafted in 1999...there would appear to be a fairly good chance of continuing productivity for Holt, even after another 2 years before his contract is done in St. Louis.
Personally, I think he'd be a great addition for the Panthers. Holt doesn't seem to have lost anything over the years. And even if he does by that point, I think he's still such a clutch receiver that he'd get open and help the Panthers' receiving corps as a slot receiver anyway. And, if he's actually open to coming here...it's certainly worth considering when the time comes.

Terrance should worry about making the team before he talks about a reunion with his brother two years down the road.

As for Hackett, I'm worried about that guy. It seems like he's always got some little nick or injury bug waiting to take him out. He still feels like a gamble to me. I just hope he makes it through an entire season and contributes. And, in light of his return to practice, I guess that's a positive thing. Just can't quite shake the thought that something else will put him on the sideline in training camp or the regular season.

Over or under 11 games played for Hackett this season?

Barring any serious injury Torry Holt will still be top receiver by the time his contract is up, I really think it would be a great move to land him. The only worry would be that our #1 and #2 receivers would be over 30 at the time and with diminished skills, but I'd still take two talented, experienced vets at 1 and 2 instead of a couple 20 somethings fresh out of college

The optimist in me says Hackett will make it past 11 games. But any odds-maker would probably concede that you chose a good breakpoint. A lot of it will depend on how much risk he's exposed to in training camp and the preseason.

Under 11 games for D.J. Hackett and the only thing that Torry Holt could lose in 2 years from now is a step or 2 in his speed.
Even in 2 years he would be able to come to Carolina and contribute much they way Proehl did,Jerry Rice (no,Im not saying Holt is on Rice's elite level) did,Muhammed did,Cris Carter (long career with VikQueens)etc, etc.
He will have lost some speed but thats about it and should still be a awsome pass catcher. Now will his brother still be around here?Thats the true question and possibly if he can live with being a career backup to see this dream out of playing with big bro.
Until then, its all just wait and see or speculation.

Listen to a podcast of much maligned Micheal Procton talk about the Panthers and more, only on the Free Radical Show.

thats not good when the knees start swelling up. the panthers better keep hackett fresh and use him sparingly so they can get him thru the year.i was hoping he would start but it looks like moose will be the 2nd wr.how did hackett pass a physical with such bad knees?

Why is everyone so concerned about Holt being 33 yrs old when he becomes a panther in 2 yrs. The guy is a beast who has long gevity skills like Joey Galloway. The guy will still be productive, and an elite receiver. Oh, and just in case no one else thought about it, at that time Steve Smith will only be one, year younger at the time (32)!! Meditate on that!!!

Chuck, it was thought about, "The only worry would be that our #1 and #2 receivers would be over 30 at the time and with diminished skills"
Posted by: matt | Jun 4, 2008 5:11:11 PM
Matt are you kidding me. The top 5 receivers in the league right now are over 30. Randy Moss (31) Terrell Owens (33) Marvin Harrison (35) Joey Galloway (38)Steve Smith (30) Terrence Holt (31) etc..... Every productive receiver in the league today, with the exception of a few, are 30 and above. What else is there to think about?? With deminished skills these guys are still elite!!!

I think it would be great for the Holt brothers to finish up together, playing for the Panthers, but the age is definitely a concern. However, his abilities do speak for themselves.

OLD news. This was covered a month ago. We don't expect a great mind to discuss concepts, but we do expect an average mind to discuss events. What do we get from the reporters? Small minded gossip.

"Today's OTA was uneventful"
translation:
Stan kept his fat ass in bed all day and waited until someone else reported on it to know about Hackett returning, but has no clue what else happened out there
Worthless...

Terrance should first worry about making this team, then he can worry about playing with his brother two years down the road.

Chuck, you obviously did not read my entire post. I said...
"The only worry would be that our #1 and #2 receivers would be over 30 at the time and with diminished skills, but I'd still take two talented, experienced vets at 1 and 2 instead of a couple 20 somethings fresh out of college."
That said, guys like Reggie Wayne, Larry Fitzgerald, Brandon Marshall, Wes Welker, and Andre are all (I believe) under 30
Posted by: matt | Jun 4, 2008 10:43:26 PM
We should trade Jordan Gross for Holt right now. The Rams would take that trade in a heart beat and we are gonna lose Gross anyway after this season.

Matt,
Point taken!! I agree 100% Just wanted to make sure that we are on the same page.
Posted by: Chuck | Jun 5, 2008 2:09:00 PM
Chuck, Steve Smith is 29, but your point is valid.
Posted by: TheMike | Jun 5, 2008 10:00:29 PM
The Mike,
He will be 30 at the start of the season.

"The top 5 receivers in the league RIGHT NOW are over 30.Steve Smith (30)"
Maybe "right now" means something different to you than me, but I wouldn't take it to mean the start of the season, that being, uhh, NOT right now.
