Smith: Jake (not Favre) is 'Our Guy'

SPARTANBURG -- As the Panthers checked into training camp Friday morning at Wofford, the subject of Brett Favre quickly came up.

Favre is the recently retired Green Bay Packers quarterback who wants back in the NFL. The Panthers were briefly rumored to be a team he might be interested in playing for, but team officials have continually squashed that idea.

Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme, who spent much of the summer in Louisiana, said he hasn’t paid much attention to the Favre saga.

“You do hear about it, you’d have to be living under a rock not to,” Delhomme said Friday. “I’m just glad all that’s not going on in our camp. So far we’re distraction free. That’s a big positive.”

Delhomme’s favorite target, Steve Smith, wouldn’t have been interested in Favre anyway.

“Jake’s our guy,” Smith said. “Jake’s my guy. Anybody else, I’m not interested.”

Smith was asked why the Panthers might have been mentioned as a potential destination for Favre.

“That’s (the media’s job),” he said. “Or maybe (the media) just thinks we’d be interested because we can’t have too many weapons. We just got another offensive lineman (Charles Spencer, acquired on Wednesday).”

   OBSERVATIONS

The Panthers arrived steadily throughout the relatively cool morning. Heading into Wofford’s Walter K. Greene dormitory, they were greeted by a sign on the main door that read: Team meeting, 4:00.

n Among the first players on hand were running back DeAngelo Williams and cornerback Richard Marshall, who cruised up on motor scooters.

n Smith is doing a video diary of training camp for the NFL Network, and he walked up the sidewalk into a group of television cameras with his camcorder rolling right back at them.

n Smith also had a few ball boys help him move his stuff into the dorm. Meanwhile, about 20 yards away, linebacker Adam Seward schlepped his own belongings, including a television set with a cord dangling perilously close to Seward’s feet as he walked.

n Linebacker Thomas Davis got out of his car and hoisted his baby son – 8-month-old Thomas Jr. – and gave him a goodbye kiss.

n Not there: First-round draft picks Jonathan Stewart and Jeff Otah, who remain unsigned. General manager Marty Hurney continues to negotiate with their agents today.

n When Smith was asked about Favre, he said he was more worried about the stock he has with two Charlotte banks “plummeting.” One of those banks happens to be a major team sponsor and a team spokesman quickly moved in to stress to reporters that Smith was just joking.

Work hard and STAY HEALTHY...Go Panthers

Posted by: mackleT. | Jul 25, 2008 12:36:03 PM

What I said was Everyone WAKE up the D-LINE sucks because the offense is 3 and out and they play 3/4ths of the game. Another thing JAKE sucks and always will be backup worthy. IDIOTS. How about this stop complaining about PSL ticket prices for the pre-season and donate them to children who never go to the games like I did. Is it gonna set you back that much, that you have to rip people off during the season. Jake SUCKS and our tickets are worthless with him anyway. Hackett is a much better receiver than Moose but in the land of lets like that guy because of one play or one year, Moose will play. STOP COMPLAINING and JAKE SUCKS

Yeah, Steve Smith must be a big idiot the way he talks about this Delhomme guy. He's the biggest bum who has ever been one of the 20 highest-rated QBs in history. He's the worst QB to ever throw 323-3 in the Super Bowl. He's EASILY the worst best QB the Panthers have ever had. [Personal attack omitted]

Thanks MP did you research that all on your own, good boy, fact still remains JAKE SUCKS and everyone will wish wish wish Brett was he. Hey, steve smith, just out of curiosity, why do you root for a team that you apparently have nothing but disdain for? Just curious.

I agree. Why do people who clearly hate this team, bother to write about them through this media???

Posted by: Steven | Jul 25, 2008 1:17:28 PM

I find it comical that people hate Jake and/or the Panthers, yet they still take the time to post unintelligent comments

Posted by: Ktown8 | Jul 25, 2008 1:23:41 PM

Hopefully Jake and Smitty still have that ESP working between them. Let's get it goin' boys!!!!

Posted by: TP | Jul 25, 2008 1:27:09 PM

Although your right to speak about our teams quarterback is acceptable here, you bring that crap to a game and you'll be wearing the bleachers for braces before you leave

Posted by: AvidCAt | Jul 25, 2008 1:35:21 PM

Why are all these people hating on the panthers? If you are going to post something bashing the panthers, at least be man enough to write your name by it (steve smith and john fox). Furthermore, learn how to put a sentence together. Jake had an 111.8 QB rating, 8 touchdowns to 1 pick and a 2-1 record before he got hurt last year. How can you say that he sucks when he was the top QB in the NFL after 3 games. I don't know if you remember last year, but David Carr is an example of a quarterback that sucks, not Jake. He is trying to become the first quarterback to come back from Tommy John surgery, but he deserves the chance considering he took us to a Super Bowl.

Use to read the blogs and articles much more than I do now because I'm pretty much fed up with all the negative crap from you posters. If you are such football brains you would think that you would be on the staff of a NFL team. Hard to believe that you are pre-school age but must be true because that's the way you sound.

dont worry fans. i got all the boys hooked up with a seasons supply og HGH.

Posted by: dr.short | Jul 25, 2008 2:49:21 PM

ill remember that when im your new qb smitty.

Posted by: brett favre | Jul 25, 2008 2:52:40 PM

I have been a panthers fan since the beginning. I am personally worried about this year. For one, I think Jake Delhomme has one more chance to prove himself. I feel he had a fluke year in 03 and I don't see him coming back from injury at the level he managed to come up with last year first 3 games. I feel we made a big mistake giving up our first round draft for the 09 season. If the panthers do not make the playoffs and go deep, we can kiss John Fox, Hurney and Delhomme goodbye. We lose out on a first rounder next year thanks to Fox and we possibly lose JP and Smitty. We have two future HOF playing in our organization that do not have super bowl rings and they will be pressing to get one.Our owner does not know how to spend the money to bring in the great players to help out with this matter. If we do not make a mark this year we will lose some great players because they won't the chance of winning the Super Bowl. Mark my word, if we lose Smitty we are right back to one of the worst teams in the NFC. I think we should bring Farve to Carolina and put pressure on Delhomme in the pre-season. Lets see who Smitty would like throwing him the ball, Delhomme or Farve. A great backup or a top 5 qb in NFL history. That was the dumbest comment I have ever heard come from Smitty's mouth. Anyways, I hope we make it to the Super Bowl. Go Panthers!!!!

Posted by: gp | Jul 25, 2008 2:52:56 PM

Why would we want Farve over Jake? Doesn't Farve usually lead the league in interceptions thrown? Isn't that why most of you guys dont like Jake, because you think he throws to many interceptions? Oh but wait! It's ok to throw interceptions if you've played in the NFL for 16 years.

Lay off my man Jake. If you need a reminder of how great Jake is, check out this video.

idiot fans...you want stats??? here are some, Jake Delhomme has 14 4th quarter comebacks since 2003-most in the NFL...with no runnning game he took this team to the NFC Championship game....he hung 320 and 3 td's in the superbowl...he has over 90 td passes in 4 healthy seasons....how about winning 4 road playoff games??? at NY, Chicago, St. louis, Philly.....how is grossman doing??? or how about the QB situation in KC??? talk trash about QB's on teams like that...people don't like Jake because he is good and the general public doesnt realize it

Its FAVRE dumbass.

Posted by: brett favre | Jul 25, 2008 2:56:46 PM

charlottes just a hick town and always will be as evidenced by you ignorant hicktown bloggers. you dont deserve the NFL.

Posted by: brett favre | Jul 25, 2008 3:00:25 PM

First of all, I do not dislike Delhomme. He had a great 03 season and we got shafted by a field goal. All I am saying is that Delhomme is coming back from Tommy surgery. Not one qb has ever come back from that kind of surgery and produced the same. In fact it became a career ending injury. I give Jake the all the credit in the world but look at the facts. Jake is getting old, just had surgery, we have a mess up on the positioning with the OL, and last John Fox has more fire under his @@@ that he has made some possible decisions we might pay for in the long road. Smitty and JP are getting up there in age and they are both highly talented athletes that want rings. Good luck putting all your eggs in one basket with Jake coming back from surgery. Bring in Farve just in case before some other team jumps on him. The statistics show that Delhomme's career is very near to through because of the type of injury he sustained. Note: I was not one of the fans that was excited about Carr or Testaverde last season. We should of let Matt Moore played more.

I have a feeling that the ignorant posters that come here have never even been to Charlotte.
