Panthers release a receiver, sign another

The Panthers cut one receiver Monday and signed another. The team waived Josh Davis, who played at York (S.C.) Comprehensive High and had been bothered by a calf injury to start training camp.

The Panthers signed receiver William Buchanon, a free agent who spent time last season on the Oakland Raiders' practice squad. Buchanon, incidentally, is the son of former Packers and Chargers defensive back Willie Buchanon, a three-time Pro Bowler.

Among the players sitting out Monday evening's practice were receivers Steve Smith and D.J. Hackett, and running backs Nick Goings and Jonathan Stewart. Goings, who sprained his ankle Sunday, was out of a protective boot that he wore later Sunday.

Monday evening's practice was lighter than the morning's, with players in shorts rather than their uniform pants. It was the defense's turn to make big plays: Cornerback Ken Lucas picked off a Matt Moore pass and returned it for a touchdown and after LaBrandon Toefield was stripped of the ball a few plays later, Nate Salley scooped it up and took it into the end zone.
Remember, don't make too much of players taking a practice off. Rookie Jonathan Stewart and receiver D.J. Hackett, although healthy now, have been hurt and they're still not in football shape. Steve Smith, who has looked sharp and focused early in camp, took Monday night off, basically, because he could. -- David Scott

Things aren't looking good for Toefield. If you're fumbling the ball during drills without full contact/tackling, what should the coaching staff expect of you on gameday?

Does anyone know what kind of college production this Buchanon kid put up and where?

The Panthers are his 5th team in less than 12 months-Raiders, Giants, Chiefs, Raiders (again) & now the Panthers. Perhaps, even worse, he played wideout for Southern Cal.

LOL.... "basically, because he could??" I hope that doesn't get contagious, taking time/plays off that is. It's one thing to be spectacular and it's a whole other thing to act like it.

Panthers.com--- "You have to admire wide receiver Steve Smith's determination, but sometimes it makes your heart stop when he throws caution to the wind and goes after a high pass in a crowd. That's exactly what happened Monday. The mid-air collision with safety Nate Salley was followed by groans from more than one observer. Fortunately, after collecting himself and making sure everything was O.K., Smith went right back into the rotation and never let up."

About this Nate Salley guy, it seems like he likes to push the limits of what's allowed in practice at the expense of his teammates to make an impression (which he does) and then gets injured himself (as if it were some type of karma) before he can even play during the regular season. Two qestions... is it really worth it to keep this guy on the roster and what does the intial depth chart look like at both safety positions?

"goes after a high pass in a crowd. That's exactly what happened Monday"

I've never been to a practice, but that description sounds like Steve went somewhere/tried something that he shouldn't have because it is only the beginning of training camp and we don't need him to get hurt. It doesn't make Salley seem dirty to me.

SYRPIS... take it easy. It's Steve Smith, not Julius Peppers.

How has Nate Salley looked during training camp?

Posted by: matt | Jul 29, 2008 7:29:31 AM

Steve Smith is the God of Panther Football. he is the grand commander of the Panthers offense. If he wants a day off, give him the day off. Don't make me send my goons after you.

Buchanon was a career backup at both WR and CB for Southern Cal. I actually think he might make more sense for this team as a CB if he wants to make the team.

I've been to the Panthers training camp and watching Salley was just like I described it. I'm not calling the guy "dirty." I'm just saying he seems to be more of a liability than an asset. I could be wrong. But to be honest, I was asking the opinion of the experts.

To be more specific, Fox says one thing you don't do is slam guys into the ground. Salley does. However, Fox said there is a fine line there and Salley wasn't mentioned on the list of controversial plays. So I just wanted to clarify what happened.

Did any of you genisus see the pictures that were posted yesterday. JAKE was fumbling the football, Looks like something we need to get used to. JAKE SUCKS. Go look at the pictures before you reply. HE SUCKS. WE want a quarterback

Posted by: hey genius | Jul 29, 2008 10:41:55 AM

So should we also get used to Jake making interceptions while playing safety? Go look at the pictures before you reply.

Yes Michael We SHould BUt how could i expect you to know the difference between playing around and playing safety and trying hard at quarterback. JACK SUCKS. But once again your intelligence is amazing. Y will you genius not realize that JAKE and DOug williams are the same

jakes always been a fumbler, and with gross at left tackle its going to be a bigger issue this year.

Posted by: ray | Jul 29, 2008 11:30:24 AM

I'm completely in favor of giving players practices off.

certain guys that you know will make the team shouldn't wear themselves down if they're in good shape come Sept 7th, who cares? Also, to take a page out of the LTomlinson book, why not just sit guys like Smith and Peppers for the entire preseason. No need to risk injury.

Posted by: john | Jul 29, 2008 11:32:45 AM

what so suprising here, we've all seen Jake fumble over the years, whey are you talking like this is some revelation?

Posted by: matt | Jul 29, 2008 11:38:33 AM

As the Farve situation heat's up the reason no one has made a commitment is because he wants to be a panther and becasue the panthers have class they are testing JAKE this week and next to see how the arm holds out. Rather JAKE know now so we can change our route than learn it 1st week of the season. BUt for pepper and smith why take the risk.

PS. JAKE SUCKS

that gave me no info david. Stewart and Hackett are in football shape!

Posted by: garet | Jul 29, 2008 12:12:13 PM

Yes, why take the risk of going into the season with the 16th-rated QB in NFL HISTORY as your starter? (Your boy Dougie Williams is 139th, by the way.)

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 29, 2008 12:17:11 PM

Getting back to the topic of this blog entry, it doesn't seem like either of the two WRs mentioned have much of a chance of landing a roster spot. Everyone still says Jason Carter has been lighting it up in OTAs and training camp. Of course, where have we heard that about a WR named Carter before?

Even so, I'm a little curious. What are the odds that Jason manages to outplay Jarrett for a role on the team? Will he make the practice squad? See any playing time? I'm really interested in watching how those two perform in the preseason games. Even if Carolina can't find a place for him (because of Smith, Muhammad, Hackett, Robinson, and Jarrett), I would think someone would claim him off waivers.

Procton, you have mentioned this about 100 times already but have yet to answer my question. Do you believe Jake is the 16th best QB since they installed the QB rating system?

Posted by: Mason | Jul 29, 2008 12:27:28 PM

The qb rating system is a very good indicator of the success of a qb but like any ranking list, it has its flaws

Posted by: matt | Jul 29, 2008 12:33:17 PM

I think the Doug Williams comparison to Jake is awful. So Jake sucks? Who should our starter be?

Fact is this team will go as far as Jake can take them this year. If he goes down we're done.

Posted by: rayray | Jul 29, 2008 12:40:34 PM

HEY MICHAEL DOES JAKE HAVE A SUPER BOWL RING NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DOUG WILLIAMS DOES

JAKE SUCKS (BRING ON BRETT)
