Stewart's Rookie Welcome
Just hours after signing his new contract with the Panthers, rookie running back Jonathan Stewart got a double-barreled welcome to the NFL from veteran linebacker Thomas Davis.
Stewart took a handoff during the team's opening training camp practice and was instantly met by Davis. Though full tackling isn't yet allowed, Davis hit Stewart hard and knocked him to the ground. The "pop" could be heard from plenty far away.
Later in the practice, Davis put a big hit on Stewart again when Stewart caught a screen pass.
The practice was Stewart's first with the team since Carolina selected him with the 13th selection of the first round of the NFL draft. He didn't take part in the team's post-draft minicamp because he was recovering from pre-draft toe surgery. Because of academic requirements at Oregon, he didn't attend the team's June practice sessions.
Stewart and Otah came to contract terms less than 24 hours before practice started. Otah's deal was agreed to around 7 p.m. Friday, and general manager Marty Hurney said Stewart's deal was completed around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
In other notes from the first practice:
-- Steve Smith blew by the secondary and caught a long touchdown pass from Matt Moore. Smith tried to throw the ball into the cheering crowd, but hit the fence surrounding the practice field and needed a second toss.
-- At first glance, fullback Troy Fleming looks a lot like Smith, only bigger.
-- Former Chargers standout Toniu Fonoti worked with the first team at right guard, a bit of a surprise. He's bounced around the NFL the past couple of years battling weight problems, but looks to be in excellent shape. If he can return to the form he had when he was one of LaDanian Tomlinson's lead blockers, the Panthers will have scored big.
-- The Panthers look much deeper, better and bigger at running back this season. Their current depth chart, based on practice carries: DeAngelo Williams, Stewart, Nick Goings, and former Jaguars backup LaBrandon Toefield.
-- Though Stewart and Williams are almost the same height (around 5-10), Stewart is much broader and has a much thicker build. They could make an intriguing combination.
-- Quarterback Jake Delhomme had a take-charge moment when he ordered the offense linemen to get down into their stances when they were standing after a busted play. That's one of the things team officials love about Delhomme; he's clearly a leader and take-charge guy. Any of the newcomers who haven't learned that Delhomme means business will figure it out quickly.
-- Julius Peppers is sporting a thicker beard than previous seasons.
-- There was no one on the injury report -- a true training camp rarity.
-- Another pleasant surprise was the weather. It was overcast and rained for part of the practice. Considering how hot and humid Spartanburg can get in these dogs days of summer, Fox said that was an answer to his players' prayers. He joked that the only thing that would have pleased them more would've been if it was lightning, which would have excused them from outdoor work entirely.
-- Owner Jerry Richardson attended the first practice, something he rarely does. He cruised around the practice fields on a golf cart with Charlotte public relations executive Steve Luquire.
-- Na'il Diggs spent much of the morning practice with the first-team defense. He's competing with rookie Dan Conner, free agent signee Landon Johnson (a former starter in Cincinnati) for the starting job.
Stay tuned for updates right here at charlotte.com.

How about that lick Stewart put on Diggs, though?
Speaking of Diggs, I hope he's in with the firsts because of familiarity, not because they actually intend on starting him. I'd take L. Johnson or probably even Dan Connor over him in a hearbeat.

Keep the updates coming. Can't be there, so I rely on these to keep on top of things. Good job Hurney on getting it done in time.

Sheer stats and physical specs don't tell the story. Fox is going to play the best player. As is the case right now with Fonoti getting first-team reps right now. Diggs is just a guy who is fundamentally sound and is always in the right at the right time, and I can't recall the last time I heard his name called for a missed assignment. There are players, Johnson and Connor, who are bigger, faster, stronger but Diggs is a savvy veteran who knows his role, and that is priceless.

Mountaineer Dynasty.....couldn't agree with you more, but I defer to the coaches over you and me. Everybody on that linebacking core is very good and I'm glad to say very healthy. It's gonna be a good year, if we can just stay healthy.

DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart and the whole Panthers team are going off this year and we are looking to have a breakout seasson.

mountaineerdynAsty,
Get your facts straight. I was at practice today, and I had a sideline view of all the linebackers. Diggs is by far the Panther's biggest linebacker, and he is much bigger than Connor and Johnson. Just thought I let you know.

Yes, mountie, but when was the last time you heard his name called for making a big play? In 31 games for us, he has 0 picks, 1 FF, and 1 FR. Johnson has 1, 3, and 2, and he makes way more tackles to go with 'em.

(in the last two years for Johnson.)

Excuse me, Tim. I wasn't meaning to speak in absolutes, but Diggs is a player who has been written off for being too old or not able to hold off the new additions of Johnson and Connor before a game has even been played. I believe Darrin Gant of the Rock Hill Herald made a similar observation months back asserting that it would appear that Johnson should start, but Diggs is always a smart player and plays within himself and that is why he might end up being the starter. I simply was saying that just because certain players are bigger, faster, or stronger doesn't mean they are the better football player, I meant it as a generalization. And Procton, I can't recall him making a big play either, and in my mind I agree with you that I would take Johnson or Connor over him on paper. But there has been a reason Diggs has taken all the first team reps since organized workouts began in the spring. He is mr. consistency and it seems the coaches love that, just an observation is all.

A good observation too mountaineer, and I would have to say that I agree with you about taking Johnson first on paper. The good thing is, I can't see a glaring weakness in the linebacking corps and there seems to be several strengths. Right now it looks like one of the best in the league, so everyone in that group is going to get their reps in and they don't have to worry about being weaker when the starters are being spelled for a few plays. That's good stuff all around, and like the rest of you I can't wait to see what they can do.

I agree, James. And not only are there no glaring weaknesses in the linebacking corps this year, but there's big-time strength in the depth of the unit. All those guys who wind up playing behind the starters, pretty much ARE starters. So if we do see injuries or disappointing play from one of first-team LBs, there's 2 or 3 guys right behind him that can fill in. That's a luxury!

Thank you so much for the updates, Ive been so excited for so long about these position battles and hearing about how the team is or isnt gelling. Keep them coming, us saps at work are practicaly drooling for them.

Diggs should be our starter, no questions asked. However, I would like to bring up the question on why he hasn't made that many plays these last few years. He has produced tackles, and he generated 3.5 sacks last year, but that's almost half as many sacks as he has produced in his whole career with the NFL. He hasn't generated an interception in over four years, and this year he turns the big 30, which spells the downward spiral of his career. If he doesn't turn up his game, Johnson might just steal his spot.
However, I look forward for Dan Connor to be a starter in a few years. He was the steal of the NFL Draft, listed in the top 25 NFL draft players of many experts. He was taken in the 74th pick, and I believe that he shall be a starter in a few years. This linebacker core we have is awesome. John Fox should seriously think about switching to a 3-4 defense for this year.

Rev, part of the reason Diggs may end up starting is to cover the front office's ass for extending him. I thought it was a dumb move at the time, and it's only made worse with the signing of Johnson and the drafting of Connor.
Our problem with a 3-4 is that we don't have the linemen to do it. Kemo can't play NT (that's why he left Baltimore), and who would play DE? Damione Lewis?

I was front and center at the morning and evening sessions and Johnson took the most reps with the first team defense, not Diggs
Posted by: J Thomas | Jul 26, 2008 10:44:00 PM
Procton, that is complete hearsay. First of all, Diggs is a smart football player and plays within himself, just ask any of the Panthers' beat writers. Do we have have an overload of LB's? Of course, but last time I checked LB is a very physically strenuous position where players get injured frequently, just ask Dan Morgan about his concussions. So, stockpiling talent at the position is only a positive. The coaches tails are on the line this year, supposedly, so the best players are going to play. And Fox even made a comment on that yesterday in regards to Fonoti. So that is a complete cop-out to make that assumption, not to mention completely unfounded.
