Carter on IR; other cuts in

The Panthers suffered their first prominent season-ending injury of the preseason when tests showed that promising wide receiver Jason Carter suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the fourth quarter against Washington Saturday.

He was placed on injured reserve and counts as one of the five roster cuts the team was required to make by Tuesday.

The other four were quarterback Lester Ricard and three players with local college ties -- cornerback Curtis DeLoatch of N.C. A&T, defensive end Casper Brinkley of South Carolina and tight end Chris Conklin of Wingate.

The release of Ricard could mean the Panthers will give a look at third-team QB Brett Basanez in the exhibition finale Thursday at Pittsburgh to determine whether they want to keep him on the 53-man regular-season roster.

The Panthers' roster now is at 75. Final cuts come Saturday.

Dang, I was hoping Conklin would make it to Thursday and get a shot at some playing time. Oh well, maybe he'll get a practice squad spot or catch on with another team.

How can you cut Brinkley so early? He had 2 sacks in preseason.

Wow...pretty surprising that Carter's injury was a season-ender. We may have to use Stewart on KR out of necessity. No big surprises among the cuts, though. Deloatch is probably above Toney, but we need SOMEBODY to bring kicks back on Thursday. A little disappointing that Hackett wasn't back today.

Who is Brinkley legitimately better than on the DL depth chart? There are 5 DEs ahead of him, all of them drafted. Maybe he'll catch on for somebody else, but 3rd and 4th quarter preseason production doesn't mean much in the long run.

Thats to bad about Carter. In all the practices I went to Jason was working hard and catching everything thrown his way. Hopefully he will make a full recovery and get another shot in 09. God speed and the best of luck during your recovery JC!

Do you guys think Labrandon Toefield should be cut?

I pesonally think they should go with Decori Birminghm instead. Its a toss up.

Too bad about Carter, I think he was in line to get a lot of PT. Hackett needs to grow a pair and get back on the practice field.

Yeah, Carter's injury was a season ender. And every day your coworkers call in sick, they're actually in bed with a hot water bottle. Particularly during the State Fair.

I have no doubt Carter suffered a bad injury Saturday, but this looks a whole lot more like putting Carter in the back pocket for next year, giving him one more set of minicamp, offseason workouts, and training camp to adjust to the NFL. My guess is, if that's Steve Smith, there's a better than average shot he goes on the PUP list instead of IR.

Auuggh! Not Jason Carter! C'mon! I was really hoping he'd catch on with us this year. Crap!

Well, I guess this means Jarrett's got a roster spot for sure now. Can we get Ryne Robinson back soon, please?

Darn, based on the headline I was hoping the Observer was just late on reporting the Drew Carter injury...now the only legitimate healthy WRs we have are Smith and Jarrett. The other 3 will be back soon, but still, its amazing how many have gone down.

Based on the Conklin cut they must like Chad Upshaw enough...As a USC guy I was pulling for Brinkley but he's not really an NFL talent. His brother Jasper should catch on with an NFL team next year if he can stay healthy.

As for Toefield/Birmingham, we should cut both of them. If we're going to keep 2 kickers then we need to save roster space somewhere. Stewart, Williams and Goings make a pretty solid RB corps, hopefully we could keep Birmingham on the practice squad though.

what parents would name there sons Casper and Jasper anyways? that being said i hope he lands on the practice squad

Ah man. I was hoping to get another look at Ricard. He seemed like a good strong arm kid with potential. I sure hope he lands on the practice squal.

Decori has shown way mor then Toefield has. I think if it's a choice grab him and see how well he does as KR.

The saints will have to cut either Moore or Green or both. We'll have to wait till the next round of cuts to get another WR. Whoever it is, hope he's a quick learner. Thompson has some upside. Guess we're left with Moose, Jarret and Thompson for game one. If Hackett can't practice this week, then we should reach an injury settlement so we will at least have a warm body to fill out the 53.

BCD, I just can't believe that...with as dire as our personnel situation is at both WR and KR, I can't imagine they'd be willing to put him up for the year in favor of guys like Dominique Thompson or Chris Hannon. Fortunately, though, there's still a chance Ryne could be back by the season opener. And as for cutting Birmingham or Toefield, I don't see any reason to get rid of them both and get rid of Fleming. He sucks.

Finally, Jeff, Ricard doesn't have any more practice squad eligibility left. He spent all 17 weeks on Jacksonville's last year.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Aug 25, 2008 8:05:16 PM

Lance Moore is bad. There's a reason the Saints don't want him. A guy with a total lack of explosiveness (9.6 YPC) ain't what you want returning kicks. Skyler Green has never done a thing in Cincy. Why would you want either?

And no, we won't reach an injury settlement with Hackett. The cap hit alone ($750K) wouldn't be worth it, and there's no way he'd come back if we put him through that.

I think we should go after Koren Robinson as long as he can stay out of trouble he is avaiable and can be a productive reciver and a good kick returner.

Michael-

I'm pretty sure Richard would still be eligible from one more year. A player may be on the practice squad for two seasons (at least according to my copy of the '07 Rulebook), keeping in mind that three weeks on the practice squad would count as a season.

Definitely cut Toefield and keep Birmingham. No speed, no power. Sorry LT.

WOW thats really surprised with Jason Carter's out for season!! that sucks man... i wonder who else will be on roster for WR. I am little surprised on Chris Conklin... come on he played pretty much and practiced a lot over summer but Gary Barnidge (if i got his last name right), he havent really do much over lately. Maybe Practice Squad would do!!

I am really sorry to see Jason Carter injured he played much better than Jarret and was probably going to see some real playing time. He will be back next year better than ever. Best of luck Jason see you when you come to visit.

There's no way Thompson will be our 3rd WR going into Week 1...either Hackett, Ryne Robinson or both will suddenly "feel better" and we'll see them on the practice field shortly after the Steelers game. Most injured players just don't want to chance anything in pre-season if they can help it...even Jonathan Stewart was reluctant to play until the doctor told him he couldn't injure the toe any further. At least one of these guys will tough it out and give us another able body at receiver til Smitty comes back.
