Delhomme: Smith won't be less of a player
Quarterback Jake Delhomme doesn't think Steve Smith will lose any on-the-field competitiveness as he works on keeping his anger more under control.
Smith is expected to receive counseling in the aftermath of punching teammate Ken Lucas in practice last Friday.
But Delhomme said today he doesn't expect Smith to soften so much that it alters his game.
"When Steve came out of his mom, he had that edge," said Delhomme. "I truly believe that. Guys feed off of Steve when Steve plays -- offensive, defensively, everybody feeds off of Steve.
"I know when the lights come on, he’s still going to be the same Steve. To me, that’s innate. You have it or you don’t have it. I truly believe somebody can’t work to get that way. You want it or you don’t want it. It’s plain and simple. … And Steve knows the type of effect he has on the football team."
Delhomme said he's very pleased with how the Panthers have responded to the incident. Coach John Fox suspended Smith for the first two regular-season games. Smith apologized and Lucas said he forgave him.
"It’s been fantastic," said Delhomme. "That was a rough deal. Everybody knows that.
"I really and truly believe we’ve got the right guys in the right areas on this team to get everything out in the open. Guys talked, and Steve knew he did wrong. But I think the biggest thing of all of it (was) . for Ken Lucas to get up here (and say he’d forgiven Smith) and other guys feeling how he felt.
"Things are going smooth. Those times can make or break a team. ... Guys are still working, still battling. That’s a great sign. It really and truly is."

I'm still not the one rehashing this, but I'm glad to see the guy is getting counseling. I hope that will help.

Dont quote me on this, but Inside the NFL on HBO ran a profile story on Steve Smith last year, and if my memory serves me correct, Smith said he's received anger counseling ever since the Anthony Bright suckerpunch, does anyone else remember seeing that piece?

Yeah Matt it was on Inside the NFL and it was a segment with Chris Carter interviewing him. You can check out this link to get the full dialogue of what he said. And he did say that he still went to them as of that day and that he did it on his own without the team having to ask.

Thanks JV, so Chandler, when did Smitty stop receiving counseling?

I agree with Jake that Smitty has an innate felling of his own ability. His emotional make-up is what fuels his competitive edge, as well as firing up his teammates. I am still expecting big things from the Pnathers, and Smitty, this year. There is somehting special going on here, and I cannot wait to see how this season plays out.
GO CATS! and JAKE!

Again Charles Chandler refuses to let this die. He is on some kind of mission to vilify Steve Smith. Charles the team has moved on, why don't you???

Am I the only one that hears a real level of excitement and positive vibes in Jake's responses, or I am missing something?

Fowler has always been a cowgurls fan. This is going to be a great season. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

"Charles the team has moved on, why don't you?"
Because this is a big deal. Steve Smith has sucker-punched a teammate on two separate occaission with the Panthers and I understand he also did it at junior college. This is a trend, and if her weren't a top 5 receiver in the NFL, he would ahve been cut a long time ago.
Ken Lucas was kneeling, hardly the position a man assumes when he is expecting violence. This isn't a "training camp" fight. This is an assault, and some folks aren't willing to simply "move on" when a repeat felon is in camp.

You're right, DBM. Anthony Bright had every right to try and deliberately make Smith look bad for no productive purpose whatsoever. Lucas had every right to shove Smith and begin the physicality. Smith is the only guilty party. He is also a domestic abuser and fights dogs. Please get yourself a seat as a judge.
