Early observations vs. Redskins

Early thoughts from the Panthers-Redskins exhibition:

-- Fortunately for the Panthers Steve Smith's fall on his right shoulder trying to catch a long pass from Jake Delhomme wasn't nearly as bad as it looked initially.

-- Good move by coach John Fox getting rookie RB Jonathan Stewart in the game with the first-team offensive line on the Panthers' second possession. Stewart's 12-yard carry on first down showed his burst and explosion.

-- Nice run by DeAngelo Williams around right end for 13 yards.

-- It's a big night for second-year WR Dwayne Jarrett. With Muhsin Muhammad, D.J. Hackett and Ryne Robinson out of uniform, Jarrett figures to get plenty of playing time and needs to show well.

-- The back-to-back sacks of Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell by Damione Lewis and Charles Johnson on inside penetration offers hope for a Panthers defense that had a paltry 23 sacks last season.

Last season, last season, last season...
...Get over it already, will ya! BTW, next time I insult this team and coaching staff, remind me to punch myself in the mouth, will ya? They do poorly (only in the second half) in a game where half of their starters are injured, and I start to get worried. Shame on me!

the def line looked tough . there was nowhere to run and they got that important inside push on pass plays.the def was actually aggressive.

They mentioned that they focused on that this week, asking the DTs to get an inside push to free up the DEs. To which, I have to ask the obvious question:

"If the defensive coordinator can make that such a focus, why the hell didn't they do it last year?"

As the New York Giants can attest, an aggressive pass rush from the entire front four can be an absolute game-changer and a dominating way to dictate play to your opponent...even if you're behind. So turn them loose more often instead of asking guys to play it safe in a flex technique at the line of scrimmage.

Just my two-cents,

Neil, they didn't do it last year because: a. they didn't have the personnel geared towards it (Jenkins just isn't an explosive pass-rusher anymore, and we didn't have a guy with bulk enough to move in from DE on passing downs...neither McClover nor Johnson could have done it.); and b. we needed to stop the run because we were trailing more often than not. We were very successful at this aim, ranking 4th in the NFL in YPA allowed.
