« Moose: Suspensions possible, but team must stay together | Main | News Alert: Smith suspended for first two games »

Early report from Fan Fest

In Steve Smith's absence, Muhsin Muhammad and D.J. Hackett are the first-team receivers today. They actually make a nice combination, though Smith is clearly the team's top offensive fireplug.

Muhsin has caught two first-down passes and both times gave his trade mark first-down signal. He caught a 26-yard pass from quarterback Jake Delhomme that had the fans cheering "Moooooooose!"

(x) First-round pick Jonathan Stewart, a rookie running back, isn't practicing. Looks l ike the Panthers are being extra careful with him. Smart move.

(x) There are whispers that coach John Fox may have an announcement after the scrimmage regarding disciplinary action related to Friday's Steve Smith-Ken Lucas fight. The general consensus in the press box is the team needs to make a strong statement and suspend Smith for at least a game or two.

(x) Another suggestion: Yes, Smith has made a lot of progress, but the Panthers should make it clear that they will not tolerate Smith punching any more teammates. It's time for a "zero tolerance" policy."

(x) On third-and-8 from the 13-yard line, in a live team scrimmage, Delhomme threw a touchdown pass to Jason Carter.

(x) Richard Marshall was flagged for pass interference on a long pass from Matt Moore to Carter. But Marshall came right back with a crunching tackle of rookie tight end Chris Conklin of Wingate.

We do not care what you think in the pressbox...You are a REPORTER-the definition of that word is to REPORT, not to offer up your leftist opinions...we need Steve Smith ON THE FIELD!! Let them fine him a million dollars if they must but NO SUSPENSION!!

bull123,

From someone who's probably more conservative than you, get a grip. Is it "leftist" to suggest a suspension is in order? Would you be saying the same thing if, say, Jason Carter (or Anthony Bright) were the guilty party? I doubt it. I love Smitty and want him to catch about 3 TDs in the Super Bowl this year, but you can't have someone punching teammates (not in the heat of actual onfield practice) and breaking their nose.
