Hackett's had a 'setback'
Notes, observations from Friday morning's practice:
-- Coach John Fox wouldn't say how serious receiver D.J. Hackett's foot injury is, except that it was a "setback" and that Hackett was "day to day." Hackett hasn't practiced, in fact hasn't even been with the team on the field, the past three days. "He was having a real good camp," said Fox. "But this is something we can work through."
-- Fox wouldn't say if any of the players who have had minor injuries this week -- including linebacker Jon Beason, cornerback Chris Gamble, safety Chris Harris and tight end Dante Rosario -- would play Saturday against the Colts. They're all game-time decisions.
-- In addition to Rosario, two other tight ends -- rookies Gary Barnidge and Chris Conklin (of Wingate) -- are also hurt, so it appears that starter Jeff King and free agent Chad Upshaw will get a whole lot of playing time Saturday.
-- Much of Friday's practice was given over to logistics for Saturday's exhibition, such as lining up properly for stretching and where on the field pre-game drills would take place. Assistant coach Ken Flajole told the linebackers where they should be before the game, then said: "I'll probably say something very inspirational to you guys at that time." -- David Scott

Not good news...all indications have been that this is a minor injury, and he's doing nothing to shed the label he picked up in Seattle that he wasn't willing to play through pain.

That "deep" receiving corps is drying up in a hurry!

Not good news...all indications have been that this is a minor story, and he's doing nothing to shed the label he picked up that he was willing to obsessively refresh Panther blogs in order to post crap opinions.

This happens every year. The Panthers are deep at a position and then the injury bug hits the squad. This year, it seams to be hitting several squads. Again, for those who say that having injuries is not an excuse,... seriously??

seems :)

It's not great that we are piling on the injuries early but if Jake, Smith, D-Will and Peppers are good there is not reason to worry too much at this point. Hopefully the Panthers won't put too many starters in danger this preseason.

Be thankful that all we're dealing with are twisted ankles. It could be much worse than it is. There are 3 more weeks of preseason to go.

How bad is Conklin's injury?
Posted by: TP | Aug 8, 2008 2:48:07 PM
Well better for them to get hurt now, than during the regular season when it counts. Most of these guys would probably be good to go if this was a game that actually mattered. I was hoping to see D.J. in action this Saturday though... Hopefully we'll get to see Jonathan Stewart carry the rock! GO CATS!!

Funny, because Mike Holmgren shares the same "crap opinion" about Hackett's dedication and work ethic. He's also been on him in the past about playing through pain, but I can't find that quote.:
"Holmgren wasn’t overly impressed with Hackett’s practice habits."
http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFL/NFC/NFC+West/Seattle/WWHI/default.htm?channel=2007
"Hackett has drawn some criticism for an inconsistent camp, and Mike Holmgren has gone from saying the job was his to saying it will be "interesting" to see who wins the job."

D.J. can't Hackett.
Posted by: dogear | Aug 8, 2008 3:08:45 PM
The irritating thing is, though, that he can...he's a great receiver with fantastic hands, good size, and a good ability to get open when he's healthy...the kind of guy most teams would LOVE to have as their #3. I'm not down on him about last year in particular; high ankle sprains are tough to recover from. This injury, though, just isn't as sever as that, and if he's not trying to do everything he can to be out on the field before the first preseason game's happened on a new team, that's cause for some concern.

Again, Procton, you are an idiot. It's the PRESEASON and TRAINING CAMP! You do not have players practice or play through MINOR injuries. Moron. Yeah, Hackett's all done because he missed a couple training camp days and a meaningless preseasoner against Jim Sorgi. Peyton Manning's not playing because he's hurt. I heard he's going on IR because the coaches need to open up a roster spot for Procton's meaningful PRESEASON

Funny, after all the crap you spew about Matt Moore....who was Moore's first win against? Oh, yeah. Mike Holmgren's Seahawks.
Posted by: Wes | Aug 8, 2008 3:59:44 PM
Hmm...last I checked, Manning had knee surgery, and he's been a member of his current team for, oh yeah 11 years; Hackett has a toe boo-boo and has been a member of his current team for less than five months. And yes, the defense beat the Seahawks. What's your point?

It's a shame that our FO can't even do a Google search on players to develop a 100% certain evaluation of said player without ever meeting, watching game film, or interviewing others in the NFL about said player.
Good god Michael, you better email Foxy about this right away! I'm pretty sure they picked D.J. by throwing darts at pictures of FA recievers.

You guys getting all worked up over this need to calm the F down. It's pre-season and any injury, minor to major is treated the same...with care and slow recovery. This ensures it gets taken care of now and is not "re-occuring". Hackett will be fine when the coin is flipped when it counts.

I think 'much of Friday's practice was given over to logistics of' how they're going to find enough uninjured players to play 4 quarters of the game!
Posted by: Wayne D | Aug 8, 2008 5:18:12 PM
as long as he ready for the first game, im cool
Posted by: jake the snake | Aug 8, 2008 5:28:47 PM
No, they picked him because he was cheap...BECAUSE of his injury history.
Posted by: Michael Procton | Aug 8, 2008 6:09:30 PM
Oh really Procton. Well I think he injured his foot and is day to day, and could care less about your analysis girl.
Posted by: Javery | Aug 8, 2008 7:07:39 PM
Sypris, great job spell checking yourself tool.
Posted by: Javery | Aug 8, 2008 7:11:19 PM
Procton, how long did it take you to find that garbage.
Posted by: jeff | Aug 8, 2008 9:50:57 PM
Can you imagine GM's sitting on the internet all day trying to get a read on "nfl scouts.com" or "rotoworld" or whatever the F Procton looks up to get his garbage information. He's such an idiot, I actually saw on the Rock Heard paper he posts constantly as well. Refresh Refresh Refresh Refresh - post stupid opinion Refresh, refresh, refresh, post another stupid blog, refresh, nothing? refresh, Post something that makes no sensee refresh, go to bed, wake up, refresh, post and repeat. Understand Hackett has had some injury issues....but let's just relax right now. It's the FIRST GAME OF THE PRESEASON - and the guy is day to day, where's the fire????

Hackett's injury has nothing to do with "playing through pain" or his "work ethic" it has to do with being injured.
His latest problem is not a "high ankle" sprain.
It had been reported earlier in the week it was his "toe" which would lead one to think it was turf toe.
However this latest problem seems to be something related to his foot.
It is amazing to me that with all these sports reporters down in Spartanburg they couldn't ask or find out what is wrong with Hackett.
From what I "heard" this latest injury is related to his plantar facia.
If it is a partial tear it is a beast and is very painful. It can take months to heal.
The other scenario is a full tear or an actual severing of the tendon.
This is painful but heals more quickly and the foot is fully functional after three or four week healing process.
If it is a total tear he could be back by the first game.
Go Panthers!
