Harris injury not serious

Strong safety Chris Harris said he suffered a groin injury in Monday night's practice, but that it's not serious. He doesn't expect to practice today or play in Saturday's exhibition opener against Indianapolis.

However, he said he expects to be back "sooner rather than later."

-- Wide receiver D.J. Hackett will get thrust into the offense more quickly now that Steve Smith is out the first two regular-season games. As long as there are no injuries, he'll start alongside Muhsin Muhammad.

Hackett said the biggest difference in playing for the Panthers and his previous team in Seattle are the pass routes. He said Carolina has a more down-the-field attack, while the Seahawks use more of a short passing game in their West Coast offense. -- Charles Chandler

signing Hackett, I think, is going to prove to be a wise move, especially in the first two weeks. Yes, we are at a disadvantage with Smith being out, but I'm not too concenred about it. Its not like we have Colbert and Drew Carter to fill the gap, we've got two proven wideouts with Moose and Hackett and this could be a chance for a Carter, jarrett, or Robinson (if he's healthy) to really shine.

Carter could take a spot away from the DL. This roster only has 8 D-Lineman.

Posted by: Steven | Aug 5, 2008 1:39:05 PM

I doubt we'd carry Colclough as a 5th CB/4th KR over Hayden or Gibson, particularly given Walker's questionable health status for the opener, or even James Anderson for that matter. I could also see Mackenzy Bernardeau fighting very hard for a spot now that they've shifted him to working some at center. Also, with as ordinary as Toefield has looked and as good as Stewart's looked in short-yardage situations, they might keep Fleming as a true FB backup who's also better on ST, while also saving about $200K.

And yes, Hayden or Gibson could certainly get a spot over Scott if he doesn't get back on the field and start showing something. The added reps and the lower cost would be attractive factors.

No Hilee Taylor on the roster? BOOOOOOOO

Posted by: Henry | Aug 5, 2008 2:39:36 PM

I'm a fan of UNC and Taylor, but I think Taylor, Travis has a better chance of making this roster than Hilee

Posted by: matt | Aug 5, 2008 2:48:07 PM

Yeah, basically I am just a bonafide UNC nuthugger so I want Hilee Taylor on the squad. Who knows, maybe one day he can become a speed rushing specialist. But Matt, you are right.

Posted by: Henry | Aug 5, 2008 2:52:50 PM

But Matt is right about Hilee's chances. Slim.

Posted by: Henry | Aug 5, 2008 2:57:02 PM

jb, that is exactly my point. Although, I certainly do hope Hileee Taylor makes the team

Posted by: matt | Aug 5, 2008 3:07:03 PM

Gotta love those 230-pound DEs who run 4.9s. Sure to make a HUGE impact. Granted, he's gotten slapped around by any OL he's gone up against in camp, but he's SO fast!

Posted by: Michael Procton | Aug 5, 2008 3:16:22 PM

I thought it was pretty well understood that Taylor's average 40 time was closer to 4.6

Posted by: matt | Aug 5, 2008 3:18:10 PM

Procton gets caught up in the numbers too much. Actually no, Procton gets caught up in numbers that are completely incorrect and fabricated...thats what I meant to say.

Hilee Taylor is 245-250 pounds. Granted his forty is a 4.8 but he is not a WR and hes not Julius Peppers either. Were not asking for a franchise player here, just a roster spot.

And yes, I am a proud UNC nuthugger.

Posted by: Henry | Aug 5, 2008 3:27:58 PM

You had to have known that comment was coming from Procton. Last week Taylor was 240, now he is down to 230, give it another couple of weeks and he will be at 200 flat. Where as most of these smaller 240 pound DEs coming out of college bulk up, this guy loses weight according to MP. He also ran that 4.9 injured and ran 4.6 at his pro day I believe. But yes, I don't see him making the active roster though I like the idea of using a situational pass rushing DE at times.

Posted by: Mason | Aug 5, 2008 3:28:56 PM

Doesn't matter to me. He could be a 235 (or even a 238)-pound DE who runs a 4.85 from UGA or USC or Florida or some other school that actually has good football players (although I guess he wouldn't be there then), and he still wouldn't be any good. I mean, when you're that small, you sure as $h!t BETTER hope you "can be a speed rusher," because you're certainly not strong enough to push anybody around.

I think Carter becomes the 3rd string qb. Basanez goes to the practice squad. Atleast that way hes available to play wr too.

Posted by: chknwing | Aug 5, 2008 4:54:28 PM

If the Panthers keep three QBs on the roster they should wait and see if a veteran QB is waived by another team. Don't get me wrong I like Moore but if we are going to keep three QBs I'd rather have someone with experience over Basanez. We are sill just one hit away on Jake to being right where we were last year.

Procton,Taylor most likely is practice squad bound and a year in weight room who knows. If you had spent 1/2 the time in class at UNC instead of the blogs then Who knows where you might have been.

Hay Chandler you might want to read this to get some pointers and learn how to write a story.

I think it's been pretty well established that Taylor ran a 4.5 and change at his pro day although as mentioned his only chance is to make the practice squad, a glance at that 53 man roster and who is missing shows how tight it is on those last few spots.

He'd need to significantly outplay one of Johnson, Mclover or Braxton to have a shot and there isn't much evidence that is happening.

Posted by: john | Aug 5, 2008 5:53:44 PM

Adam Seward will make this team. Gibson probably will.

Michael Procton can lick my ball sac.

I think it would be better if the Panthers only kept 2 QB's since they are going to carrier 3 kickers. That way, it opens a spot for someone else like Carter to make this team. Put Basanez on the pratice squad and if something happens to Jake, then activate him. The odds of 2 QB's getting hurt in the same game are slim to none.

Posted by: LyleStyle | Aug 6, 2008 10:30:52 AM

I think the roster is accurate in some places..but I highly doubt we will go into the season with only 7 offensive lineman, I think they might carry at least 1 more in the event of an injury.

Posted by: JV | Aug 6, 2008 11:34:07 AM

I'm pretty sure Basanez' practice squad eligibility has been exhausted. You can't have been on full-pay status for more than 15 weeks, and he was on IR (which grants full pay) for all 16 last year, plus he was on the roster for four weeks his rookie season.

There are 8 linemen on that roster, JV. Bridges, Fonoti, Hang are the backups.
