News Alert: Smith suspended for first two games

Panthers star receiver Steve Smith has been suspended for the team's first two regular-season games without pay for punching cornerback Ken Lucas in Friday morning's training camp practice in Spartanburg, breaking Lucas' nose.

"What he did was wrong," Fox said of Smith. "We take it very serious. He's being punished severely. ... It's an act that's inexcusable and it can't happen."

The Panthers open the season at San Diego on Sept. 7, then play at home against Chicago on Sept. 14.

Fox, speaking after the team's Fan Fest scrimmage Saturday at Bank of America Stadium, said Smith will be able to practice and play in the preseason, then will prohibited to be around the team for two weeks starting Sept. 2, the Monday before the first game.

"The suspension includes regular season games," said Fox. "Those are the ones they get paid in. That's the way we'll operate and that's the way the landscape is."

The suspension was half of the maximum four games the Panthers were permitted to suspend Smith under the NFL collective bargaining agreement.

The suspension is expected to cost Smith $205,882, the pro-rated portion of his $1.75 million annual salary covering two games.

Smith and Lucas were debating a practice play on the sidelines when Smith punched Lucas while Lucas was on one knee. Numerous teammates and coaches converged on the scene to try to break up the melee. Eventually, linebacker Jon Beason pulled Smith away from Lucas.

Lucas was later taken to a tent and an ice pack was placed on the left side of his face and left eye. Smith walked over, accompanied by Muhsin Muhammad, to apologize, but the damage was done.

"He knows he made a mistake," said Fox. "Yet, he has to pay for it."

Asked if he thought Lucas and Smith could get over the incident and work together as teammates, Fox said: "Time will tell. I believe so."

Smith didn't attend Saturday's scrimmage, but quarterback Jake Delhomme said Lucas made an appearance in the locker room.

Delhomme said Lucas was "overwhelmed."

"Everybody came up to tell him hello," said Delhomme.

Delhomme said he left Lucas a phone message "from the heart" Friday night.

"A lesser player would not have come today," said Delhomme.

Delhomme said Smith sent him a "remorseful" text message Friday night.

A representative for Smith said before Fox's announcement that Smith had "no comment at this time." Lucas wasn't available for comment and his agent hasn't returned phone calls or e-mails.

Fox said he doesn't know when Lucas will be able able to return to practice.

"He's in good spirits, mentally and physically," Fox said of Lucas. "It could have been worse, not that a broken nose is not bad enough. But we'll treat it as we go."

Muhsin Muhammad and D.J. Hackett are expected to be the starting receivers in Smith's absence. They worked with the first-team offense during the scrimmage.

This is the second time Smith has been suspended for hurting a teammate in a fight. In 2002, he injured the face of fellow receiver Anthony Bright during an argument in a team meeting room and sat out one game. Bright filed a civil suit, which was settled out of court.

Smith also attacked a teammate in the preseason of that same season.

Smith subsequently underwent anger management counseling and, in recent years, had appeared to have his temper more under control.

When asked if Smith now faces a zero-tolerance policy regarding attacking teammates, Fox said:

"It's an internal matter. I'm not trying to be secretive. These are the kind of matters we'll keep in-house. We're doing it the right way.

"We're going to help him. He's still ours. Yet, he is going to have conditions. He knows what those are and we're going to move forward."

Since Smith is one of the NFL's top receivers, the suspension hurts the Panthers talent level starting out a season when Fox and the team are likely under pressure from management to have a successful year.

"It's a t ough league and a tough situaition," said Fox. "You lose guys to injuries. The other guys have got to step up. It's an opportunity for them, and we've got to move forward."

It's right on the money to say that "throwing punches is not a part of football."

While I knew there would be displinary action taken against Steve, it really sucks that with the amount of media, and fans that witnessed the event, we have yet to TRULY hear the true story about what happened.

Hell, in all the photos I've seen Lucas was on top of Smith. Personally I think they are throwing Smith under the bus on this one just because of the incident in 2002.

I've seen many fights, on the field, off the field, in the bar, wherever in my day to know that if someone sucker punches you like they say Smith did, and it breaks your nose, you aren't going to be in a position to get up and tackle the guy who did it.

I'm still waiting on the full eyewitness report.

Between a rock and a hard place is not where anyone wants to be, but that is where this franchise is beacause of this madness. Let's see, I just got a fat contract that pays me in the top 5, I'm the spokesperson for my team and a household name. My team is poised for great success this year and I can afford just about anything I want. Hmmmmmmmmmm.... maybe I'll punch Ken Lucas in the face for saying something I didn't like. Yeah! That's the ticket! ...what a jerk!

regular season or pre-season???

Why are so many people in denial about Steve Smith punching Ken Lucas in the face (breaking his nose) while he is on one knee and his helmet off. Are people waiting to hear what Lucas said? Is there something Lucas could to have said to justify Smith. Whatever it was--if it was a taunt or a response to Smith's jawing--Smith has to be big enough to walk away and realize that Lucas is on HIS own team. The Panthers organization obviously investigated and found Smith worthy of disciplinary action. He got off light considering it's his second violent incident with a teammate.

Thank you Dave. I couldn't have said it better myself. Where's that hack putz Pat You-stink-as* when you need him. He needs to get a hold of this story and tear it up. It's probably why the team had Lucas and Smith dissappear. Pataloskiuski might still be in town.

This sucks as I have tickets to the Chargers game.

Well, I guess we'll have to see how good some of our new receivers are. At least now we seem to be at a point where we have enough depth to make us still capable of posing a threat in the passing game, although Smitty would be much better to have on the field. It sucks that Smitty will not be there, but he's being punished accordingly. I for one will not hate the guy because he lost control of his temper. Especially since he's being punished for it. The last time this happened was six years ago. SIX! It means that there are still issues he has to work on, but it doesn't mean the guy is a thug as some have called him.

He does need help, and he is being punished, so nothing more should be said about it from the ultra-judgmental perfect people out there.

While it would be helpful to know what Lucas ssaid, I think this is a fair decision. Had they been face-to-face it would be differnet, but so far it appears that that wasn't the case (although I agree with the commenter regarding the appearance of Lucas being on top of Smith...odd). This decision needed to be made and I doubt that Lucas will walk away clean - he will probably be fined, but it won't be a public matter. In terms of the team "Punishing itself", this is no different than if Steve would have gotten hurt and was unavailable for the first two games. There is enough depth at receiver and the running game should be strong enough to overcome the loss.

Note to Jason Carter - here is your ticket to the 53-man roster. Keep working it.

Gosh, this takes the wind right out of my sails. I mean, I was really thinking big things about this team this season. We can't start out 0-2. MOOSE AND HACKETT HAVE GOT TO STEP UP! Maybe I am being over zealous but maybe this is the chance that Jason Carter kid needs to get in the game and show up something for real and not just in camp! That might be something good to come out of this.

Posted by: Henry | Aug 2, 2008 1:59:04 PM

KCPanther, we are definitely thinking the same about Carter! This could be a blessing, sorta, maybe, kinda....or maybe I am just searching for some good to come out of this hell we seem to be in.

I work at a tv station and i talked to the sports guy who was there. he told me the two were jawing about how much money the other is making. something about how smith said, "now that you are getting paid like i do you should earn it like i do" dunno what lucas said back that made smitty pop him.

Posted by: matt s | Aug 2, 2008 2:14:16 PM

Ha, ha. Suck it!

Posted by: Shawne Merriman | Aug 2, 2008 3:04:13 PM

It must have been something along the lines of smitty being Richardson's boy and having to eat fried chicken on TV for a living. That woulda done the trick. Still think Smith is an egotistical punk, no matter what was said.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Aug 2, 2008 3:20:47 PM

it sucks adout smitty i no it was wrong but this is football not soccer u train players to be mean nasty but not cross the line thats hard!!!!!!!! on to something good Jason Carter looked good at fan fest and has seem to be haveing good camp

first to games looking harder and harder got to come out of that 1-1

I can't believe the fans are chanting my name at the home opener. fox put the first nail in his own coffin.

Anybody want to buy my tickets for the Panthers/Chargers game? I paid $400 for two seats on the 5th row behind the Panthers. I wanted to see Steve Smith play. Now I have to watch a game without our best player! We will definitely lose our first two players. Smith should have been suspended for preseason play. This is football and emotions get high sometimes.

The Chargers usually get off to a slow start. I think the Panthers can still win that game. The front office had to prove that Smith doesn't have Carte Blanche to do whatever he wants.

Posted by: Token | Aug 2, 2008 4:11:38 PM

Hey, Vegas...sounds like you're not a Panthers fan, but a Steve Smith groupie. Smitty is out of line, and the TEAM is really pissed off at both he and Lucas for the whole deal. Smith went waaaaaaaaaaay over the line again, and he forced management's hand. They really have no choice but to suspend him.

I was at FanFest this morning...there's a lot of people that had better learn to love D.J. Hackett and Dwayne Jarrett in a damn hurry and stop whining about Smith.

The silver lininig in all of this is that as a team, Carolina has a TON of depth at WR. While there may not a another Smith waiting in the wings, and his loss is a blow, let's all hope that Jarret and Hackett step up.

What really sucked this morning was seeing Stewart in shorts. While it's agreat idea to protect him, I REALLY wanted to see him play for a minute.

Some observations, if you'll allow me:

The scrimmage started by pitting first D against second O, and if not for a pass interference call against Marshall, the second O has negative net yards with three sacks in 11 plays.

The second session was first O against second D, and it was a mismatch all the way around. The offense ran and passed at will, with Delhomme having plenty of time to throw. Jason Carter made a nice grab on a seam route into the back of the endzone for a TD.

Jake's arm is WAY stronger than any other QB's, and his release looks a lot quicker, too. It's obvious that he's stronger than ever.

Richard Marhsall can PLAY...he makes up ground in a hurry. The interference call was unnecessary...the ball from Moore was way overthrown.

Peppers looks great, and came clean for a sack on like the third play of the scrimmage. The place went "nuts".

Moose still knows how to get open and use his body. Good to see 87 back out there!

Lloyd has an abolute howitzer for a leg...he drilled a 55 yarder in warm ups that hit way up in the netting. He promptly missed two from inside 35 yards. It reminds me of a guy mishitting a driver. When he hits it, WOW! And when he misses, UGH.

D'Angelo is fast as hell...and he disappears into the line only to squirt out the other side. This whole Thunder and Lightning thing with him and Stewart could actually materialize.

Posted by: Scott | Aug 2, 2008 4:20:05 PM

Scott. I seriously thank you for that!

And I Like Token's point. I think that the other teams always put so much emphasis on Steve Macanroe (#89) and Jake is always so impelled to through it to him, that a change up might do well.

Bad things man...
Cheap shot? Oh yeah.
Did on-field action provoke it? Probably.
Punishment fit the crime? Not my call.
Is it gonna hurt the team? Some.
Will they both live to play? Yes.
Any of our business? NO WAY.

I don't think a one-sided suspension sounds like the right approach because this is an internal team matter, and I know there are two sides to the story. But the episode and the punishment should have stayed internal as well. 30 years ago in HIGH SCHOOL the players involved would have been running laps until they puked. Now it's national news and lawsuits. BS.

At the same time, if I punched out a co-worker IN THE OFFICE, I'd be gone and have a tough time finding another job. And I'm sure there would be lawsuits.

My point is these guys are not playing in an office, so office rules do not apply. They are on a battlefield every Sunday for our enjoyment. There is no way an internal skirmish between two warriors should cost us 12.5% of the season without a key player. If it was opposing teams, maybe. But this was internal family business. If not for the fact that the first two games go 50-50 even if Smith was there, I would say the Panthers owe season ticket holders a partial refund. Instead, we're lucky it probably won't make a difference in those two games and we'll get to see some younger receivers perform alongside a seasoned returning vet.

This whole incident has been blown way, way, out of proportion. Two highly competitive trash talking athletes let the heat of the day and heat of the moment get the best of them. Just because Smith did the most damage in the fight does not make him solely responsible. Furthermore, a TWO REGULAR SEASON GAME SUSPENSION?????? What a way to start a season, 0-2 and with your best offensive player isolated from the team. Smith is an emotional guy and this suspension could damage his mental focus for the season and even his desire to play in Carolina. What a great situation we’ll have if Smith is demanding a trade once he is reinstated? Then we’ll have a “Chad Johnson-like” circus on our hands. In certain situations it’s good to take the high road, but this isn’t one of them. A suspension for the entire preseason and a large fine would have been acceptable and harsh enough to punish Smith for his mistake. We might have just lost our franchise player folks…………

I honestly don't know what to think of this--think I am still in shock.

I had a brother like this--bad temper--started in childhood. He never one time hit his wife but would put holes in the wall now and then. Well one day they had a baby and one day the temper and he was given fair warning do something about it or she was leaving and taking the baby and he would never see them again. He went for help and it changed him completely..you could not believe he was the same person. There was a calm and a strength he possessed that you could feel existed within him. The temper was gone completely. Now its years and 4 grown sons later and he has the finest grown sons any parent could hope for.

Maybe Smitty is selfish and cares only about himself and therefore doesn't click in his head that he cannot respond to anyone this way.
