Observations, notes from Thursday
-- The Panthers spent a lot of time Thursday on last-second field goal drills. The offensive unit would rush off the field, with the field-goal unit sprinting on in its place. Kicker John Kasay would take a snap, then spike the ball to kill the clock. Then he’d kick what was presumably a game-winning field goal.
-- Backup quarterback Brett Basanez found himself on a punt coverage team and was blocked out of bounds by Curtis Deloatch and Joe Fields. Basanez didn’t back down and ran up to a referee, took the yellow flag out of his pocket and threw it to the ground. Basanez was just kidding of course, especially after defensive tackle Damione Lewis said of being able to hit a quarterback who for some reason was running around on a punt return: “You’ve got to take advantage of that opportunity!”
-- There was confusion during one drill on getting the right number of players onto the field. “Usually when one (player) comes off, one’s got to go on,” said Fox. “You figure that out.”
-- One of training camp’s most consistent sites is rookie safety Charles Godfrey standing with secondary coach Mike Gillhamer while drills are going on. Godfrey is soaking up every bit of knowledge he can.
-- Former assistant coach Don Breaux, who was with the Panthers from 1995-2002 before going to the Washington Redskins, watched practice. Breaux retired after last season.
-- Several players missed practice Thursday, including linebacker Jon Beason (ankle), safety Chris Harris (upper leg), tight end Dante Rosario (hamstring) and cornerback Chris Gamble (hamstring).
-- The Panthers practice at 10:45 a.m. Friday, their only practice of the day. They'll head to Charlotte afterward for Saturday's preseason opener against Indianapolis. They'll take Sunday off before returning to Spartanburg for three final days of training camp. After an exhibition game next Thursday in Philadelphia, the rest of preseason practice will be spent in Charlotte. -– David Scott

so, um, have you been able to confirm that Lloyd is not practicing field goals, as you reported before?

Silly Procton, then kid has no credibility so do not believe him when he tells you about Otah not being good, check out this great prediction:
Michael Procton on March 21st, 2008 8:53 am I’m from North Carolina, so I’ve followed Davidson pretty closely this year. No CHANCE they get by Georgetown. They have nothing in the post at all to stop Hibbert.

Jesus...I'm the one with too much time on my hands? I'm not anonymously googling other posters' fake names to find dirt on them.
Oh, and I'll maintain that Davidson did NOT, in fact, shut Hibbert down. John Thompson and the refs did. JTIII forgot (as usual) that your offense should run through your best player, and the zeebs were so confused about Hibbert being a foot taller than anybody in a red jersey, they didn't have a clue how to officiate the damn game.

I'm out of the loop a bit, but have they announced who will be starting at MLB saturday night? I think it should be and want it to be Conner, but I do have a feeling Fox will put Seward in there with the first team unit

Probably a safe assumption, matt. Seward's been seeing all the first team work with Beason down when he hasn't been sitting himself. No need to throw Connor to the wolves quite yet, either. This way, too, he'll be able to stay in longer, whereas there'd be the temptation to pull him sooner with the rest of the starters if he came in first.

I doubt we'll see much of it in game situations, but it's good to see Baz and the coaches are using creative ways to increase the versatility included with every one of the 45 (?) game day roster spots.
Also good to see Godfrey hasn't anointed himself secondary messiah as some fans have.
