Smith out with concussion
-- Receiver Steve Smith missed Monday morning's practice with a concussion he suffered in Saturday's exhibition against Indianapolis. Smith took a helmet-to-helmet shot from a Colts defender on a 19-yard reception from Matt Moore, Smith's only reception of the game. Coach John Fox said Smith, who is suspended for the Panthers' first two regular-season games, was day-to-day with the injury.
-- Linebacker Jon Beason and defensive tackle Damione Lewis, who missed Saturday's game with injuries, returned to practice Monday. Cornerback Ken Lucas, who had an operation on the broken nose he suffered when he was punched by Smith 10 days ago, also went through a light workout on the sidelines. -- David Scott

Hmm...would have been nice if Matty hadn't left him totally out to dry with both of his "bionic arm=powered" throws.

what is it about this team and qb's who throw high balls, I thought Jake was bad, I guess it has started to rub off onto Matt Moore

Procton,
Did you not watch the game Saturady night? In the 2 times that Moore did throw to Smitty, each was in extremely tight coverage and he put the ball in places were just Smitty could catch it. Both throws were over the middle as well what do you expect. He didn't leave him out to dry either, it was just a solid hit by the defender (which it didn't even look lke that bad of a hit). I am not Moore's biigest supporter but to try and nit pick on that throw...it was not because of his arm strength.

Michael Procton not nitpick?
Are you serious? He's like the most awesomest message board guru of all time. You should just read and learn.
/sarcasm off

Michael,
I agree! Last year, I read where Smitty told Matt not to worry about it. Just put the ball up there and he'd go get it. Smitty knows this could happen but he also knows when the ball gets put up there like that, whether it be by Jake, Matt or whoever, he's the one that has the best chance to come down with it. That's how Smitty plays and that's what he expects of his QB(s). He'd rather have that then have the ball go elsewhere.

You're right, MB...it wasn't because of his arm strength. His fans will tell you that he's got oodles of it. It was because of his total lack of downfield throwing accuracy. To say that those throws down the middle of the field (particularly the one Smith DIDN'T catch) didn't leave him out to dry is ridiculous. Smith had to go up at least 40 inches off the ground and leave himself unprotected to try and make the catch, because that's what he--as an elite receiver and a player--does.

Sorry for the duplicate post. It timed out and said that it didn't take so I re-posted.

the one smith dropped was thrown in about the only spot it could have been, smith should have caught it.

Procton,
You obviously did not watch the game....Moore's first pass to Smiity should have been caught. 89 takes that throw down everytime in the regular season, Smith will even tell you that he should have had it.
Is it just me or did you not totally side step the fact that the DB was all over Smith like a wet blanket????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
HE PUT THE BALL WHERE SMITH COULD JUST CATCH IT!!!
Arm stregth was not a factor on either of the throws to Smith!!!

Michael Procton?????
I've heard of a Chuck Chandler and a Stan Olson and a David Scott. But a Micheal Procton?????

procton is just a bum with nothing to do all day.The fact that he thinks he could play any down in the nfl is just rediculous.i'd love to see him try and make the runs d williams makes.he would be carried off the field in a body bag.

I don't know if you guys remember this or not, but I don't think Jake ever threw a pass to Moose that wasn't high. Maybe it was because Moose liked it up high away from the shorter dbs or maybe it was b/c Jake has terrible accuracy, only they know. I also remember Jake constantly under-throwing Smitty on deep balls. Maybe that is b/c Jake has terrible arm strength, or maybe it is b/c that have great chemistry together and Smitty can react to the under-throw more quickly than the db and thus has a better chance of catching it. Either way the under-throw and the high pass are two of Jake's better throws, maybe Moore is learning from him.
Simply put, it wasn't a great pass by Moore but considering the tight coverage, he put the ball where only Smitty could catch it and gave him a chance to go up and make a play, which he did. As always, Procton's posts are completely worthless and a waste of everyone's time.

Looks like ole Fox has not changed his game-plan: play for the field goal, win with defense, ball-control. If they win this way, great, but it would be nice to see a little pizzazz along the way.

That's either "karma" or people gunning for him now that he is a bit of a public enemy. Either way, I'm smiling. :)

And DI, I'd hate to admit it, but I agree.
Posted by: SYRPIS | Aug 11, 2008 2:12:53 PM
does it really matter HOW the team wins?
Posted by: matt | Aug 11, 2008 2:27:50 PM
Amen, matt...I'll take 19 weeks of 2-0 victories if it comes to it.

wasnt it john lennon who said "instant karma's gonna get you......steve smith"

On a more important note, what about the depth at RB!? Does it seem that the development of the highly coveted 1st round draft pick is as urgent anymore? Frankly though, with the holes that OL was opening up Steve Beurlein had time to jump out of the commentator's booth and run for the TD!

Just to clarify, I was making a referrence to how well Tofield and that Birmingham guy did. I know they were not going up the opposing first team D, but they stilled showed some moxy. Once again, Goings is going to have to prove durability and conditioning is where it's supposed to be to make the final roster. He is versatile a capable, but can he stay healthy? After all, we already have Stewart listed as a question mark in that department.
And yes, Williams did look brilliant, but an all fairness so did the offensive line (including Gross).
Posted by: SYRPIS | Aug 11, 2008 2:47:36 PM
Yes, it pained me to admit Gross did well, but I still believe he's a schmuck for this standstill in contract negotiations.
Posted by: SYRPIS | Aug 11, 2008 2:49:42 PM
Yes, everyone looked good, but I think the Philly game will be a clearly more relevant sample (although still obviously not definitive.) I like Gross, and yes, he looked fairly good (though we did most of our running to the right), but he was matched up against, umm, Ben Ishola? That guy's never even made a 53-man roster, much less started a game or anything.
Posted by: Michael Procton | Aug 11, 2008 2:51:47 PM
I can't believe I'm saying this either, but thanks for pointing that out MP. But like you said, let's see what happens against Philly and so on.

Procton, have you ever even sniffed a football field before. You seem to be a expert on everything.
