Smith should be down to his last chance with Panthers

Zero is the number of times Steve Smith should be able to get away with punching a teammate and still remain a member of the Carolina Panthers.

Enough's enough and John Fox, Marty Hurney and Jerry Richardson need to make it clear to Smith (they probably already have) that he can't wear a Panthers uniform anymore if what happened Friday in full view of the media and a crowd of fans that included children ever happens again.

The intent here is not to pounce on Smith when he's down. The point is that an NFL team, especially one that's run as orderly as Carolina, simply cannot tolerate any player, no matter how good he is, to be a physical threat to his teammates and the overall reputation of the organization.

Smith's vicious attack on cornerback Ken Lucas is the epitomy of "conduct detrimental to the team," the term the league's collective bargaining agreement uses to describe a misstep so grievous that a team can evoke up to a four-game suspension.

Only one day after the incident, just look at the fallout: Smith has been suspended for the Panthers' games against San Diego and Chicago, both good teams, and Lucas has a broken nose and an uncertain return-to-practice date.

The fact that this occurred on the watch of a coach and general manager whose jobs are likely on the line this season makes what happened even more hard to fathom.

To their credit, however, Fox and Hurney didn't let their desire to have their best offensive player on the field as much as possible deter them from doing the right thing.

The two-game suspension is warranted and Fox should be highly commended for the no-nonsense manner in which he presented the news to the media. This wasn't a coach trying to skirt an issue. This wasn't a man in denial. This was Fox acting like a leader of men, calling out a player everyone knows he needs desperately -- and doing so emphatically.

   Good for Fox.

Is there now a zero-tolerance policy for Smith? I asked Fox and he wouldn't say for sure, but he did acknowledge that Smith had been given certain conditions for the future.

I like Smith. I think he's changed over the past six years since he was last known to punch a teammate (Anthony Bright). I believe he means well. I believe him when he says he loves Jesus and wants to be a good husband, father and citizen. I don't question his intent when he holds a summer camp for children and says he loves working with kids.

Smith grew up the tough way in the streets of L.A. -- short, smaller than most males his age, and without a dad involved in his life.

He survived in part because there was a fire and a fight inside of him that refused to accept the notion that he was no-good-for-nothing.

That same fire and fight is what makes him such an excellent NFL player, so determined to succeed.

But the wounds of his past and the internal anger that gets triggered when the touchy areas of his mind or heart get touched the wrong way are still in need of healing.

Steve Smith believes in a God who will forgive him over and over and over again. That's a good thing.

But he lives in a world and works in a business -- and for an owner -- that cannot give him an endless number of chances to make good. Too much is at stake for everyone involved.

Wow! That was a brilliant piece Mr. Charles Chandler. I think you just made a convert out of me. Just a moment ago I was disgusted with Steve Smith, sick of the NFL and didn't care about watching another Panther game. Now I'm actually willing to forgive the guy!

Yea yea yea

Thats what analysts said about different players on different teams with FAR WORSE problems in frequent times

What has it been. A 6 long year difference

Lets move on please. Media keeps the cloud around

well, if he's kicked off the Panthers, I think he has a career in the UFC!!

Posted by: ken | Aug 2, 2008 6:14:40 PM

OMG
the media needs to get over themselves.

Smith is the best thing the Panthers have going for them, this is sports and he is great at his job THE END.

you don't like it then i suggest you go cover something else that doesn't work that way.

I'm even more tired of hearing excuses made for Smith than I am of reading about Favre.
both have become pathetic caricatures.
somebody sit Smith down and get him to recite, "sticks and stones...

Thank you, father Charles.

Actually I agree completely. Who wants a team full of pussies? I mean, not the... you know what I mean.

Steve Smith scares me. I ain't comin to Carolina.

Posted by: Bret Favre | Aug 2, 2008 6:54:22 PM

hadnt ken lucas gotten some nose jobs done before this whole incident?

Posted by: matt | Aug 2, 2008 6:58:15 PM

I'm burning my 89 jersey. I always loved Ken more. Now it's solidified. Steve is good, agreed. But I've heard that Hitler was a genius. Do we want a Nazi on the Panthers? I THINK N O T

Charles,
I agree with SYRPSIS. You nailed it with that piece.

Cut him Now you heatherns!!!!

Of course Smith is out of chances here, thats no big secret.

Although, I'd much rather have a guy like Smith punching guys out than a superstar ending up in the police blotter a few times a year.

Very good article

My experience around football shows that occasional fights do happen between teammates. The hitting and hurting plus the "showing up" of a teammate takes its toll. The 2-game suspension is probably deserved by Smith since this is his second serious attack.

So if the next time he gets into a fight is 2014 he should be automatically gone?

Seriously Charles, that's really what you think?

Mr. Chandler,
This might have been the best Panthers blog that I have read. I love Steve and we may never know exactly what happened, but even without all of the facts he was in the wrong. It has been 6 years though since the last fighting incident so I hope this will no tarnish his legacy. Even if it doesn't, another incident like this won't be tolerated by the Panthers.

Mr. Chandler,
This might have been the best Panthers blog that I have read. I love Steve and we may never know exactly what happened, but even without all of the facts (like what Lucas did to provoke him if anything), he was in the wrong.

It has been 6 years though since the last fighting incident so I hope this will not tarnish his legacy. Either way, another incident like this won't be tolerated by the Panthers.

"Mr. Rhichardson, of course I'll take Mr. Steve Smith here. He will set every one straight on the Cowboys". I realize your fans want understand that little scrap on the sideline is boys being boys, Yeah half of our boys beat up their wives and girlfriends hell I once had a coach carry a gun on a plane, and a receiver who made it into the Hall of Fame with a COCAINE problem. Yeah no problem Jerry look forward to the REFS screwing my team over again real soon.

Yes John, i think thats what he means. 2014, or any year, he should be gone. His short syndrome doesnt give him the the right to break someone's nose. Great example Steve, i wonder what his own children think?? Retaliation is okay if you are offended by what someone says?? Forgiveness is in line, but there are punishments that come along with forgiveness.

Anybody know what type of trade value Smith is worth? Maybe Get a 1st, 2nd, and two 3rd rounders for him next year. I bet Dallas would take him. Please don't get me wrong Smith and Peppers are my favorite Players on the team but it seems there is too many haters on here.

(Smith grew up the tough way in the streets of L.A. -- short, smaller than most males his age, and without a dad involved in his life.)

Boo hoo.....Another misguided youth forced to live in this society without guidance. Why are you playing the "I blame my parents stance"? Why do you have to throw the "Jesus" role into it? So what? What does this have to with his faith? Fox and Hurney did what they had to do. No more reason to throw him under the bus with this worthless excuse for a blog.

Coaches shouldn't allow taunting and trashtalking during practice and these feelings wouldn't run so deep. Smith is a game changer. I want the best players on the field during games. Fine him to the max, but let the ticket buyer get as much for his money as possible.

This whole incident has been blown way, way, out of proportion. Two highly competitive trash talking athletes let the heat of the day and heat of the moment get the best of them. Just because Smith did the most damage in the fight does not make him solely responsible. Furthermore, a TWO REGULAR SEASON GAME SUSPENSION?????? What a way to start a season, 0-2 and with your best offensive player isolated from the team. Smith is an emotional guy and this suspension could damage his mental focus for the season and even his desire to play in Carolina. What a great situation we’ll have if Smith is demanding a trade once he is reinstated? Then we’ll have a “Chad Johnson-like” circus on our hands. In certain situations it’s good to take the high road, but this isn’t one of them. A suspension for the entire preseason and a large fine would have been acceptable and harsh enough to punish Smith for his mistake. We might have just lost our franchise player folks…………

Dallas doesn't want Steve Smith. He stole on Lucas. He was on the side line whining as usual. He has anger issues that he should be able to work on, so I don't want to hear about his poor background in LA. That mofo is rich now and he can afford a therapist. And you wonder why Muhammad is back.

Posted by: Dallas fan | Aug 2, 2008 9:58:15 PM

Great piece of journalism...but a better piece would be discovering and telling the story of how Lucas and Smith have 'been at it' sparring with each other since Lucas got here, according to staff (who have been here since '95). It is no secret to them, in talking with them, that this has been going on for a while. One staff member even told me that 'Lucas go what he deserved' for his verbal attack on Smith. While I think that is a stupid thing to say, it does provide some insight into therelationship these two have had. Also, if this volatile relationship has been going on for a while, and to the point where the security staff and equipment personnel knew about theon-going fued, why didn't te coaching staff. If they did know about it, why haven't they done something until now to defuse/end it?

(You can thank me later for the article idea after you have done some homework and typed/printed it up.)
