Stewart with the 1's

Rookie running back Jonathan Stewart is likely to get some rushing attempts behind the Panthers' first-team offensive line in Saturday night's home exhibition against Washington, according to coach John Fox.

Stewart had four carries for three yards in the third quarter of last Thursday's exhibition at Philadelphia, but he ran only behind the second-team line.

It'll be interesting to see how he does with the starters, who are expected to play into the third quarter.

-- The Panthers signed former Georgia wide receiver Sean Bailey to fill the roster spot created by DT Ian Scott's departure via injury settlement. Bailey, an undrafted free agent, caught 39 passes at Georgia last season for 615 yards and five touchdowns.

Hopefully both Williams and Stewart will split the carries in Saturday night's game. It will be interesting to see how well Stewart performs with the first team. Maybe the offense will be able to sustain some drives and get some quality work in before the end of the third. I know the weather was bad in Philly, but the offense did look pretty bad. Any update on the injuries to the WRs??

Hey there Charles, thanks for the input. After hearing a lot of good things about Stew during OTAs and TC, I too am ready to see what he can do with the ones. Washington was a playoff team last year, so it should be a good indicator to what we can expect from him.

I am not too concerned with the Panthers being cautious with him, there really is no reason to rush him into action. Especially as it is still just preseason. That said, we have all heard that his toe is fine, so it is time for him to step up and show what his skill set really looks like.

With the regular season basically two weeks away, Stew still has time to prove what he can do. But, time is running out on our (The fans) patience. We want to know if Stew is the real deal, or another skip in the road that is the Panthers draft record.

Still am excited for the potential that Stew and DWill possess. I know what DWill can do, I am just antsy to find out what Stew has.

GO CATS! and JAKE!

FINALLY! J-Stew getting some reps with the 1's sounds GREAT to me, y'all. While we're all sitting here fretting about Hackett and Robinson and Jarrett, I think we're forgetting how HUGE a big bruiser could be for the offense, and how much pressure that could take off of Jake, Smitty, Moose, et al.

To be honest, if he's not a big splash, I'm one of the group that thinks the Offense is still mediocre, which means we're an 8-8 team with a new coach next year, which would be a shame.

Feed the stud...that's Carolina's mantra. I'm hoping the Stewart is indeed a stud...I just hate that I'm not going to be able to see the game. Thank GAWD for NFL FieldPass and the NFL network replays, though!

Raise a Scotch to me if you're fortunate enough to see the game live.

I just want to say what do you think about a trade to get Boldin from the Cardinal he will be a great fit, and what about getting Sinorce Moss to be are Return Man, and play wide out sometimes he will not make the Gaint crowded Receiving cord we should think about it.

I just watched the Jarrett interview on P.com. Despite all the typical rhetoric, he sounds like good guy. I regret saying some of the things I did about him.

On a related note, it's a real shame Robinson suffered that injury. Seeing what he did last year, he was my sleeper at WR coming into this season. Now I'm not sure he's going to get a legitimate chance to break into the lineup at all.

Note: I hope I don't regret saying I regret my previous comments about the guy. Especially seeing how bad we need someone at WR to have a breakout season (Moose included). I still think Boldin would be a great addition. Like I asked before; does anyone know if Anquan has character issues??

Posted by: SYRPIS | Aug 20, 2008 6:46:05 PM

That sounds awsome about j stew, since there is hardly anyone to pass to then everybody will expect the run. So whatever j stew does dont let it get to you if its not what you wish for. After all if all you have to do is run then everyone would do the same. GO PANTHERS skin the reds!!!!!!!!

I am ready to see Beef Stew go with the first team o-line. DeAngelo and Beef Stew are gonna make a vicious 1-2 punch outta the backfield. Play Action is gonna be very effective as well.
Jonathan "Beef" Stewart is gonna be nasty!

Sean Bailey from Ga.??? Is he related to Boss or Champ? If so this should be good to see.

Posted by: Ghost of Sparta | Aug 20, 2008 9:05:56 PM

SYRP, you're crazy if you don't think there's a Panthers PR rep coaching every one of those interviews for the website. And of course Boldin has character issues. He's causing a huge locker room disruption because he doesn't want to honor a contract he signed himself.

Daggit MP, you've made another good point!! Grrrrh.. It's hard hating on you when you do that.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Aug 20, 2008 10:04:01 PM

Last 3 slots will probably be Basanez, J. Carter and Salley

Posted by: Nate | Aug 21, 2008 12:46:28 AM

What about Fonoti? The native analysts were big on him in camp.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Aug 21, 2008 1:05:04 AM

Fonoti will be on the 53 man roster

Did anyone see this about Gene Upshaw??

Syrpis, it kind of depends on how you look at it concerning the Boldin situation. He says that management told him after last season that they would renegotiate his contract since he is grossly underpaid for his talent and production. If they have reneged on a promise they made to him, I could understand his frustrations and would say then that Arizona's management has some character issues. But of course, only the people on the inside know the truth. But hearing Wisenhut interviewed, sounds an awful lot like they promised to rework the contract but just haven't been able to come to terms.

As for Bouldin, he has a legitimate dispute to get more money, he has every reason to be angry, I dont know if his anger with org. is affecting his performance or his relationship with his team, so I would say the guy has any major character issues that should be a concern.

Posted by: matt | Aug 21, 2008 9:33:27 AM

Performance for the past 3 years:

Fitzgerald
44 games, 3764 yards, 26 TDs
85.54 yds/game, .59 TD/game
Awarded a 4 year $40 million contract

Boldin
42 games, 3458 yards, 20 TDs
82.3 yds/game, .47 TD/game
Still on a 4 year $22.67 million contract

How dare Boldin complain about making 57% as much as a guy he produced 96% as much offense as.

Posted by: Stats | Aug 21, 2008 9:59:50 AM

I dont think there is any question that this is bad management on the part of Arizona.

Posted by: matt | Aug 21, 2008 10:02:57 AM

And Fitzgerald had 2 years left on the contract that he signed.

They aren't guaranteed contracts for a reason. Go watch the NBA if you want to see some guys play half-a**ed because they know they get paid regardless.

Posted by: Stats | Aug 21, 2008 10:03:47 AM

I have very low expectations on this season. The OL isn't producing like they said it would, the WR can't stay healthy, the D looked mediocre. Throw in a return game that has to be worst in the nation and you're looking at a .500 sub .500 ball club.

I know it's just preseason, but the panthers always try to win these games and they just haven't looked good.

Someone what to let me know why I should be more optimistic?

Posted by: bonnell=procton | Aug 21, 2008 10:23:54 AM

bonnell=procton

Reasons to be more optimistic (more is a relative term) are that Philly has one of the better defenses and teams in the league and our starters were up at half against theirs on the road. Our O-line looked great on offense against a depleted Indy first unit as well. We have had a lot of change on the O-line and you can't expect them to gel already, nor do we need them to. We need them to continue to improve and gain a feel for one another and be ready in two weeks.

Jake hasn't looked great, but he did improve as the game went on against Philly and we were missing Smitty, his favorite target. Should have been a TD on the pass to Moose or at least first and goal from the 1.

We need to get more pressure and contributions from Brayton/Johnson as well as the DTs as it appears teams are going to concentrate mostly on Peppers. If those guys can step up I see our defense being one of the top units in the league. With a top ranked defense and two solid RBs, a John Fox team will be in the playoffs.

That is a lot of if's, mason...

But, unlike many bloggers on here, I actually want both the panthers and the bcats to be successful or, at the very least, fun to watch.

Here's to hoping you're right.

Posted by: bonnell=procton | Aug 21, 2008 2:35:55 PM

We dont need more depth at WR. Smith, Moose, Hackett, Jarrett, Robinson, Bailey. Plus 3 descent pass catching TE's. We are a run first offense. All I gotta say is Beef Stew is gonna Ground and Pound along with DeAngelo.
