Stewart's itching to play

Rookie running back Jonathan Stewart’s arm wasn’t long enough to scratch the middle of his back. He equated that to what it was like not dressing out or playing Saturday in the Panthers’ first exhibition against Indianapolis.

“It’s like the itch on my back I can’t really reach either,” Stewart said after Carolina's 23-20 overtime win over the Colts. “I mean, I’m itching to get out there. But we’re just playing it smart.”

Stewart, a first-round pick, still has soreness in his right big toe, which he injured last season at Oregon and which underwent surgery in March by Dr. Robert Anderson, one of Carolina's team physicians.

Asked if he was held out of the game for precautionary reasons or because his toe simply wasn’t recovered enough for him to be in a game, Stewart said: “I think it was a little bit of both. The doctors here know what they’re doing. Dr. Anderson did my surgery. He’s (a) team doctor, so I’m just going to trust in him.”

With Stewart out, DeAngelo Williams shined while playing in just the first quarter. Williams had 55 yards rushing and two touchdowns on nine carries.

Stewart said he didn’t know whether he’d play in Thursday’s exhibition at Philadelphia.

Can he at least run two times next game?

Will that hurt anything

Posted by: jake the snake | Aug 10, 2008 1:58:05 AM

D. Will really looked good running the rock tonight, and the first team Dee looked even better. But, then again we always look in the preseason. We suck like hell when it really counts. I am optimistic, but i dare to get hopes up too high again this year!!!

Posted by: Chuck | Aug 10, 2008 2:44:50 AM

My guess is 9-7 or 8-8 this year. And thats realistic with a lot of 3 point wins. Cardiac Cats, take your blood pressure medicine if you want to make it through this season!!

“It’s like the itch on my back I can’t really reach either,” Stewart said after Carolina's 23-20 overtime win over the Colts. “I mean, I’m itching to get out there. Deangelo Williams is proving that it may have been a reach and very uneccessary to draft my hurt ass in the first round. Its like they don't even need me."

Posted by: Jonathan Stewart | Aug 10, 2008 8:36:54 AM

Prediction:
Michael Procton was shi*ting his pants last night watching Deangelo play well. The guy hates him so much I'm sure he rather watch the team and Deangelo play bad to prove he's right, which he very, very, very rarely has been.

Procton, please log on and discredit Williams play last night. We can't wait you negative little girl.

Posted by: Jeff | Aug 10, 2008 8:40:10 AM

Procton will disappear after the performance that Peppers and Williams had today. Jeff - that's pretty funny. Procton did you make sure to change your underwear after the play Peppers was making or dominating I mean? Or are you going to come on here and post some stupid stat about Tony Ugoh on how bad he is. This is awesome, I love seeing Procton being the fool he always is.

LMAO.

He'll probably wait until the next blog to start posting his negative anti-panther crap. i wish the guy would just go away.

I think its hilarious how MIKE PERSINGER comes on here wielding his power and getting all mad at everyone BUT procton, who is known by everyone on here for his personal attacks. Persinger you should realize that guy makes it miserable for everyone on here.
maybe Mike = Michael?

Posted by: Tony T | Aug 10, 2008 11:25:01 AM

Williams looked fine, but with holes like the o-line was opening, Eric Shelton could have looked good last night.

And yes, Peppers looked fine, too, but Ugoh is basically a league-average tackle. I'll be waiting until a real game (and the game after it) to call Peppers "cured." Also, Peppers' night certainly wasn't as impressive as the announcers wanted to make him sound. I like how they gave a sack to him when a dude with a 0 on his jersey hit Sorgi, despite the fact that said dude came in from the secondary, had a 3 in front of that 0, and Peppers wasn't even on the field.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Aug 10, 2008 1:36:37 PM

The O-line certainly made Williams look good. But I also remember plays where Williams patiently let the defense run past, made a cut, and chose his own path for a big gain, too. So, I think it's fair to say Williams made the O-line look good, as well. It's a team sport anyway. Individual assessment doesn't matter nearly as much as the end result. Williams...9 carries...55 yards...offense puts up 2 TDs. And no settling for FGs...

Peppers looked real well, too. His pressure on Sorgi was palpable. You can't ask much more than a sack and forced fumble on the very first series by #90. And on the second series, it was Peppers and Gibson applying pressure that led to the interception by Seward.

I'm not looking for a 15 sack season out of Peppers. Just solid play-making when it's needed. And he clearly provided that last night.

Also, I loved when he came off the field after that first turnover. He lifted a hand to salute each side of the field and the crowd loved it. Clearly, he knows what he needs to do to perform this year. And he also knew he'd just done it on that first series.

I hope we see this kind of play from Williams and Peppers all year long...

And it should only get better when Stewart gets a chance to scratch that itch...

Posted by: NSpicer | Aug 10, 2008 2:04:16 PM

Stewart will make an impact. We have a bigger O-line and Stewart is a power back. That is when the Panthers are at their best (ref. Stephen Davis)

The defense will be alright, we had good linebacker play last year, and the secondary suffered because of the lack of a pass rush.

So we'll be alright...we'll pull out a 10-6

The following is a simulated interview of the Proctologist if he were someone whose opinion anyone else cared about.

Steve: Good morning everyone! I would like to welcome Michael Procton to the show today. He is a controversial Panthers blogger who is best known for his tirades, soap-box speeches, and disappearing when he is faced with an argumant he can't win. How are you doing today Mike?

MP: I'm great Steve! I have the gout again, and haven't left my computer chair since last March, so I smell pretty bad, but other than that I can't complain.

Steve: Well that's good to hear Mike, so let's get right down to it, shall we?

MP: By all means Steve, I can't wait!

Steve: Ok Mike, which Panthers do you hate the most?

MP: Well Steve, that is a good question. Right off the top of my head, I'd say I hate DeAngelo Williams, Julius Peppers, Matt Moore, Jeff Otah, and Dwayne Jarrett the most, but if I am really honest, I pretty much hate all Panthers except Jake Delhomme and Jon Beason, both of whom I would love to have a late-night rendezvous with, MMmmmmmmm, Jake... (licking lips)

Steve: Well it is interesting that you would say that Mike, what do you have to say about D-Will and Peppers' dominating performances against the Colts the other night? Or Matt Moore and Jarrett's very solid performances?

MP: Well I would definitely not call them "dominating" Steve. I watched the game, and Peppers was REALLY sleeping on the bench the entire game because he is so lazy. The hundreds of thousands of casual fans or media members may not have noticed that because they can't see as well as I do, but it is true. Also, Williams was running through holes a mile wide, and did you see that ONE PLAY where Williams was dancing around in the backfield and got stuffed for a loss? As far as Matt Moore goes, forget that he is a young QB with limited experience, forget that he has consistently played well, though not spectacular for us in his few appearances, and forget that he is our BACKUP QB. All of his completions last night were against the Colts' tired-and-ready-to-go-home 4th stringers. I mean how can that POSSIBLY MEAN ANYTHING?? I have said before he is not good, so the book is closed on the matter. And as far as Dwayne Jarrett goes, don't even get me started. I have passed judgement on these players, and that is the final word. I can not be wrong, Steve. Besides, it was a pre-season game, and we all know they are meaningless games which are not indicative of how a team will perform once the regular season starts.

Steve: Well, circular logic aside, I have to ask, wouldn't Jeff Otah have had something to do with those "mile-wide holes" D-Will was running through? I only ask because you conspicuously decided to leave an analysis of his performance out of your rant. Also, wasn't Barry Sanders known for having a lot of his runs stuffed in the backfield when he tried to make something happen? Surely you can't be saying he was not a good running back because he got stopped in the backfield every once in a while. I mean, doesn't every running back lose yards from time to time?

MP: ...

Steve: Mike, are you going to answer the question?

MP: ...

Steve: Seriously Mike, why are you just sitting there acting like you don't hear me?

MP: ...

Steve: Um, ok... Moving on... I must say that I agree with you about the pre-season being somewhat "meaningless". That being said, how do you feel about DJ Hackett missing this game because of a foot injury?

MP: It is completely unacceptable Steve. I mean it is absolutely LUDICROUS that the team went out and rescued this bum from not having a job this year, and he thanks them by not showing up to play for the most important game of his career with the team! I mean, he has only been with the team for 5 months, and he doesn't sacrifice his well-being to give the team his all in their first game!?! I am outraged!.

Steve: Ah, I see you can hear me again. We must have had some technical difficulties earlier. Anyway, back to the point: I thought you just said that preseason games are meaningless. Why so upset about Hackett not playing in one to give his toe time to rest for the important games coming up? Furthermore, why do you not seem upset about Jonathan Stewart not participating, when he has been with the team even less time than Hackett?

MP: I'm glad you ask, Steve. Obviously, I can't be mad at Jonathan Stewart, because I have been on his bandwagon ever since he was drafted, because I can not STAND DeAngelo Williams and Jon is our one true hope to get rid of that scrub. Besides, Jon had surgery on his foot, so his injury is real. Hackett is just a big faker. I know because of all my reliable inside sources.

Steve: For credibility, could you name any of these sources?

MP: Oh absolutely, I know Ricardo Colclough's grandmother's neighbor's daughter's boyfriend's best friend. His name is Bill... something.

Steve: Many would say that almost every player you have been slandering all offseason have thus far exceeded your meager expectations for them. What do you have to say in response to this?

MP: ...

Steve: Yeah, gotcha. Well Michael, it has been inexplicable interviewing you today. I'd like to thank you for your time. In closing I will ask one final question. Many of your detractors would say that your statements are inconsistent, nonsensical, and inflammatory to the point that there is not one person on earth who likes you. What would you like to say to these people?

MP: You know, I carry a heavy burden Steve. It is not easy being me. I spend 22-23 hours a day trolling blogs and searching football statistic pages, and still I have to find time to spread mass amounts of anti-Panther propaganda while never forgetting to always believe that I am right, even in the face of overwhelming evidence that I am, always have been, and always will be a massive tool who doesn't know his (rectum) from a hole in the ground. I would thank you for having me on the show, but I know the pleasure is all yours. So good day, and good riddance.

Steve: (rude gesture)

The dedication that some of you guys hold to bashing Procton far exceeds his dedication of looking up stats. Some of you should think about actually debating football, and not getting into personal attacks. The fact that you let Procton get to you that much is ridiculous and hilarious all at the same time.

I've been touting D-Will all last season and this offseason, and he really impressed last night. About 6 ypc and 2 TD's against mostly starters on defense (sans Sanders of course). If you thought that was amazing, keep in mind he averaged only a yard less per carry all last season. I think he's really gonna be a playmaker this year.

Peppers looked great last night. Really had a lot of energy and drive. You can tell he really wants it. All stats aside, he was making Ugoh's head spin. I mean Ugoh was having big problems with him, forcing Sorgi into these 3 step drop and 6 yard passes. I honestly believe Peppers playing on that side is going to make him a beast this upcoming season. On a contract year, I think he can compete for Defensive POY.

hey procton, that otah looked pretty good too huh, you could have drove a truck thru that right side. moore didnt look too bad either, along with williams and peppers.

the greatest part of that Procton interview is the part about Stewart. Procton bashed the hell out of Stewart prior to the Panthers drafting him, and even right after they drafted him...before he came to his senses and realized he should love Stewart due to his woman trapped in a man's body frustration and hatred of Williams.

the guy changes his I'm never wrong opinions more than he does his tampon.

Chuck,

Well, well...you are one hell of a Panther fan, I must say. I'm sure any team member (and most of the real fans on here) reading your profound "prediction" is as proud of you as you are of the Panthers. I'm sure your argument is that you are just being realistic...I would like to call is pesimistic and a bit narcistic. And you even have the gonads to say "we" in your post when you spew such trash. Do "us" a favor and don't waste your time posting if you are only going to talk such negativity. You are the same priss who will be jumping up and down during the playoffs when the Panthers are winning, saying "I told you they would be good" Give me a freaking break...."we"..lmao at YOU!

Yall ever seen the SNL skit where they have a character called "Debbie Downer", people are having a good time, enjoying the positive things in life, then Debbie comes in to tell people about the worst in everything and everybody. Does anyone on this site resemble her?

matt,

LOL. Yes I do...we are both dating ourselves though with that admition/recollection. But you are right, that is a perfect analogy of a few on here who, if you spend any time at all on here..like once a week, fit that bill and you know who they are. I learned a long time ago, some people are not happy unless they have something to complain about. I've never been one to expect the worst and hope for the best. Sadly that seems to be what some "fans" have come to in supporting their teams. I expect the best and support no matter what. It's easy to support and praise when you are doing good. Do it when things are not going as expected and when it does happen, true jubilation will transpire and victory will be that much sweeter. I think they have a term called "fair weather" fans. Well you, my friend, have made a new term called the "Debbie Downers" club. lmao.
