Tempers flare in scrimmage
SPARTANBURG Spartanburg
-- The practice also included a goal-line touchdown pass to backup center Geoff Hangartner, who caught the ball over Julius Peppers’ outstretched fingers on a lineman-eligible play. Then, despite linebacker Jon Beason telling him, “don’t do that,” Hangartner spiked the ball with a flourish.
--Offensive and defensive players barked at each other after good plays for most of the afternoon, with the defenders led as usual by lineman Stanley McClover. One play that got the “D” stirred up was an interception of quarterback Jake Delhomme by linebacker Thomas Davis.
--And in one of the rites of camp, following practice the defense taped six of its rookies—Charles Godfrey, Dan Connor, Nick Hayden, Casper Brinkley, Joe Fields and Shaun Smith—to a goalpost, wrapping them up in layers of athletic tape. The rest of the defense dumped bottles of sports drinks on them as they struggled to free themselves. Then the vets brought out the heavy artillery, dousing them with coolers of ice.
After that, the tape didn’t hold for long.
--On hand to see the workout was James Robert Kennedy, better known as “Radio,” and the man the movie of that name was based on. When defensive back Ken Lucas was introduced to him, he was asked if he knew who Kennedy was and said, “You’re Mr. Radio.”

I know they are two different situations but it's funny that two lineman can go at it and box each other with helmets flying off with no repremand and others get worse. Even though it was Smitty's 2nd offense and I agree on the outcome they should have a no tolerance policy for punches thrown. Pushing and shoving is part of the game but when you throw blows your in a whole different league.

Come on JV, lighten up a little. These guys are fighting thier tails off to make an NFL Football Team, emotion is a by-product of that battle. Only 53 guys make a team, so they are fighting for an opportunity of a lifetime.
Personally, I am more concerned with Hangartner spiking the ball. THAT is bush, and I applaud Beason for trying to stop him. Which is ironic, because Miami used to be known for just that sort of thing.
GO CATS! and JAKE!

Cool that we were using Hang as a goal-line TE. That would be a boon to our smashmouth approach, and if he can catch the ball too, that's another added weapon. GB has had a lot of success with the tactic in recent years.
And please, iah...you really have a problem with a backup o-lineman spiking a ball in practice after he catches a TD? Who cares? Beason didn't want to stop him because he thought it was unacceptable, he didn't want it pointed off that an LB let an OG get open and catch a TD on him.
Some weird selections in the hazing group. Shaun Smith is an international guy who's gonna be around all year, so that makes sense.
