Briggs escapes fine

Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs won't be fined for a hit on Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme last Sunday that drew the ire of Carolina players.

"It was a legal hit and there was no penalty called on the play," NFL spokesman Randall Liu said after the league reviewed the play.  "The quarterback slid late and Briggs had already committed.  It was not a foul."

Briggs' hard hit on a slidding Delhomme appeared to inspire the Panthers during their comeback from a 14-point deficit to beat the Bears 20-17.

Some players suggested afterward that Briggs could, or should, be fined even though he wasn't penalized on the play.

Probably the same people that said Ed Hochili made the right call in the SD/Denver game. What a bunch of retards. But it fired the team up and totally turned our play around so I'd say we got the good end of that deal..a Win and no injusry to Jake.

A "slidding" Delhomme?

It was a gift, seeing as Delhomme got fired up and our defense followed suit.

"It was a legal hit and there was no penalty called on the play," NFL spokesman Randall Liu said after the league reviewed the play. "The quarterback slid late and Briggs had already committed. It was not a foul."

Translation: There was no penalty called on the play so it was a legal hit. The quarterback committed late and Briggs had already decided to take the hit and didn't pull up. We (NFL officials) can't afford to have another blown call.

And the line "Briggs already committed" No sh!t he was committed to Jake's head off. The point is Briggs "committed" late. Every friggin' hit is committed. Is there such a hit that is not committed... Sorry dude I wasn't committed when I tackled you..I just got lucky. That's the stupidest explanation I've ever heard of, yet common.

But hey, I'm not too mad, we won the game and Jake came away unscathed (sp). I just don't like reading chicken sh!t explanations like that.

BTW, when is the last time you saw a QB get drilled in the head, roll around on the ground for a minute, then get up and pump fist his chest? I think Jake is taking this year seriously...If that doesn't fire you up, then nothing will!

OK ---Breeath--- 1)look at the post tackle celebration & 2)the point of contact was so low... what was Briggs aiming at?? Judging at the height of the point of contact, it must have been somewhere below the knees. Let's not overlook the obvious, which is any NFL player in mid tackle can ease off if they so choose (instead of following through and celebrating afterwards like Briggs did).

Man, I would love to meet this thug face to face...

And when I say thug, I'm refferring to Randall Liu.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 18, 2008 7:09:37 PM

Two things bother me about this play. 1) Briggs was awful low, he was either going for Jakes legs (Which just doesn't seem likely) or his head. Normally, you go for a big hit on the QB, which is higher at the torso, not at the legs. 2) The way Briggs got up and ran to the sidelines like a scared child. He obviously didn't want to stay in the area. Maybe he was afraid of retaliation by a Panther for what he knew was a cheap shot?

I still feel Briggs went low because he saw Jake going down. And if he saw Jake going down, wouldn't he know he didn't need to hit Jake? That smells of cheap shot to me.

Just a thought. GO CATS! and JAKE!

Syrpis,

Exactly! What NFL LB is going to hit an NFL QB in the lower legs who is running free. They ALWAYS hit them HIGH. So how did Briggs hit Jake in the head, LOW? They are trying to tell us that he was just tackling Jake low (committed) and Jake's head got in the way when he slid? Total smell and look of BS! Good Job LU LU or whatever your name is.

Posted by: Carolina Wild | Sep 18, 2008 7:15:54 PM

Wild-- are you still talking out of your a**?? In the future, I suggest you do a little research (in this case, watch video) before you open your mouth. That way, you wont sound so ignorant.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 18, 2008 7:22:43 PM

iamhubby,

Exactly. Lu Lu must think us Panther fans can't see or know how football is played. Can you fine an NFL spokesman for coming out with a ridiculous, half a$$ attempt of an explanation? I would have rather them say it's football, if you, the QB, don't want to get hit, then don't run downfield. But hey, rules are rules. I didn't make them. Lu Lu and his cronies did. If it wasn't a rule, then our DEF could knock out the other QB as well. But don't try to say it was a legal play. Call it what it is.

Frankly, I read your post several times, and still don't understand what you are trying to say. Regardless, I'm sure you're still bitter about getting showed up the other day. I think in would be in BOTH of our interests if you just lay off.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 18, 2008 7:25:02 PM

Syrpis,

I was agreeing with you dumba@@. Jesus, you really are a douche bag. I know it's hard to read tone in email, but if you would follow my entire post, anybody would see I was strengthening both our statements. Now who looks and sounds ignorant. DA DA douche bag!

Posted by: Carolina Wild | Sep 18, 2008 7:27:08 PM

LoL. My bad. You're still an ignorant SOB. LOL

This is complete bull crap! I join the list of offended people. Everyone who watched that game could tell that was a late hit. So they didn't call the penalty so that automatically doesn't make it a finable offense? Give me a break. We all saw it on television! We know it was late! I doubt that these officials even watched the film.

Look at this article for example. "If he hadn't taken the extra steps, he wouldn't have gotten hit."

There is a large difference between a QB taking a few extra steps and mauling him while he's on the ground. So much for humility. I wasn't so irritated because I had faith that the NFL would hit him with a 25,000$ dollar fine or something along those lines. Now I'm pissed. I'm going to write the NFL a very nasty letter explaining my displeasure at this.

Seriously, this is very stupid. Is this the week that the refs decided to be morons or what?

Posted by: Revshawn | Sep 18, 2008 7:37:08 PM

SIR PUSS,

I don't know what you are referring to, but you are a true moron. I am done entertaining you and your ridiculous antics not because you threaten me but because it makes me look as shallow and narrowminded as you.... your definiton of personal attacks..lmao You truly are not worth my time and I am sorry for you that the best part of you ran down your daddy's leg. FOAD!

Posted by: Carolina Wild | Sep 18, 2008 7:38:15 PM

That was lame...

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 18, 2008 7:43:32 PM

Rev, that's not a bad idea. What's the address? Maybe you can (with support of others) get appropriate action levied.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 18, 2008 7:44:50 PM

Wild,

That was low, but FUN NEEEEEEE.

Syprris, you truly sound and look like a retard. Please keep your mouth shut if you can't keep up and let the grownups talk. You are on the nerves of many on here, just look at previous posts. Just some words of advice.

Posted by: Wes | Sep 18, 2008 7:44:54 PM

If it's not too big a favor, I would like to ask all of you to try to find a youtube video or something showing just this hit. That way I can start a petition with the video added onto it and hopefully get this resolved.

Throw me a email at Revshawn@yahoo.com

CarolinaWild,

Don't give syrpis the time of day. It is clear that he doesn't know what he is talking about and would rather argue and play games with people on here than talk about football. He is clearly the leader in the village of idiots.

Now to the hit, everyone can see the hit was cheap and avoidable. The difference is who is a Panther fan and who isn't. No matter what they say, our own eyes do not decieve us.

Translation: "You are a small market team and your QB is a smaller name than the guy who hit him, so there will be no fine. Especially since our refs didn't throw a flag and the last thing we need is more controversy over their incompetence."

Carolina,
lOL. That's some funny crap. Slurpus is a biatch who got his money stolen from him at school, tried to play football but his mommy said he couldn't because he still wets his bed and cries when he is touched. She trys to talk big on here.

jdb, I think you hit the nail on the head! I guess two Championship games and a SB in just 12 full seasons doesn't amount to anything for the media or NFL fat heads. At the end of the day we'll show them with our actions! JD is the real deal and so is Steve!

Briggs is a thug, not our Smitty.

I tell you what. I'll make it easy for you posers. I will be at the Lions game on November 16th. I will be in section 521, holding up a poster that says, "FOX rules." Or if you prefer, we can make other arrangements. Now put up or shut up, cyber-punks.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 18, 2008 10:01:03 PM

Can we get back to talking about football now? Anything else is just a waste of space.

For what it's worth, I initially reacted like everyone else at the game when Jake got hit on his slide. It looked late to me.

Since then, I've a had few opportunities to watch it again on various replays at normal speed. And I've got to agree with the officials. There was little Briggs could do to avoid it. He didn't take any extra steps to get there. He was already commited to tackling him before Jake started the slide.

Now, having said that, I'm sure Briggs knew Jake was going to slide. I'm sure he wanted to hit him before he went down. And as long as he could get a full head of steam and arrive at the same time Jake went to the ground, he knew he'd get away with it. That's why he was so thrilled to have pulled off that hit and rushed to his sideline to celebrate with his teammates.

But, you know what? Who cares?

That one play did more to ensure the Panthers would win the game than anything else we did all day. Jake came out of it uninjured. He's now officially taken his first really hard hit since coming back from his surgery. It gave Jake an opportunity to demonstrate his fire and determination again. And everyone (the defense included) rallied around him.

If the NFL had fined Briggs for the hit, we should have paid it for him as a thank-you...

Just my two-cents,
--Neil
