End of first half
Halftime score: Panthers 14, Falcons 9
The Panthers struck with their longest offensive gain of the season when Steve Smith caught a 56-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jake Delhomme.
It was classic Smith, a master at gaining yards after the catch. He caught the ball on the Atlanta 40, broke two tackles, did a 360-degree spin and won the race with defenders to the end zone.
That gave the Panthers a 14-6 lead and it likely would have stayed there if not for a penalty for having too many players on the field.
Atlanta kicker Jason Elam missed a 49-yard field goal with 42 seconds left in the half, but the Panthers were penalized for having 12 men on the field.
After the 5-yard penalty was assessed, Elam made a 44-yarder to cut Carolina's lead to five points.
The Panthers are having a suprisingly difficult time running the ball against the NFL's 23rd-ranked run defense. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart have gained 38 yards rushing on 14 carries.
Atlanta, however, is continuing to run the ball well. The Falcons entered the game leading the league in rushing offense. Michael Turner and Jerrious Norwood have combined to gain 82 yards on 13 carries.
EXTRA NOTE: A Pop Warner youth football game being played at halftime features a running back named Stephen Davis Jr., son of the former Panthers RB.

Lousy game..too many penalties ..AGAIN! Well here goes another year..too many foul ups in the ranks. They all play like they are confused. They are not a team on the same page. This team needs a leader.

Penalties are killing the Panthers every week (since game one)! They should set up something like a swear jar, except it would be for penalties instead. Of course, coaches would have to chip in too when they put too many men on the field on special teams... unbelievable. Maybe the money could be donated to a NFL referee training camp (or even youth football).
