Smith's latest blog

In his latest blog on the Athletes United For Youth website, suspended receiver Steve Smith talks about what he's been doing lately (playing tennis with Jim Courier), where he spent last Sunday while the Panthers played at San Diego (he watched his son play soccer in Asheville) and how he reacted to Dante Rosario's game-winning catch (you don't want to know).

"I almost pooped on myself"

Posted by: Steve Smith | Sep 12, 2008 4:03:26 PM

WOW, I didn't realize youth soccer played out of the county let alone out of the state...SD? Now that's a dedicated soccer mom/dad. Thanks for the link to clear it up. Next time say "see link" lmao

Posted by: Carolina Wild | Sep 12, 2008 5:10:30 PM

Did Smitty say he was driving and texting?

Posted by: harrydog | Sep 12, 2008 5:42:11 PM

his son wasn't playing soccer in SD, it was in Asheville.

i think it's funny how all those national columnists refused to believe that the locker room wouldn't be pulled apart by the punching incident, even when players kept constantly saying how they were encouraging each other, and acting even more like a team and a family. and then we come out and play so well together, stun SD in their house, hear how all the players make sure to include smith in everything that is going on...eat crow columnists!

Posted by: gchan | Sep 12, 2008 6:47:22 PM

Well, the sting in the pocket must hurt for Steve. But I really didn't envision him going to Asheville and NOT watch the game. I guess it was just too much for him to take.

"...I did not watch the game Sunday against the Chargers. I listened to it on the radio. I was in my vehicle driving back from Asheville. My oldest son, Peyton, had soccer games in Asheville and some really good friends of ours have a cabin up there. Sunday, I woke up at 7 and chased some golf balls, well, I lost a lot of golf balls on the course, then I went to the Biltmore House and then we drove home and I listened to the game. "

gchan,
I think Carolina Wild was being being sarcastic....hence the statement (not question) and then a question mark after SD and the line "thanks for the link to clear it up" I know it's hard to read sarcasim. What he should have said was who proof reads these "columinsts" posts before they hit send. Nice job David Scott.

"allowing THIS EVENT to define me...??" Pray tell, what event is this gentleman reffering to? Alas, tis a year of politics and all must adhere to such modes of public speech.

In other words... what rubbish. The only worse than this event is how reporters keep covering every little move the cretan makes. It reminds me of a song from the Police. In retrospect, the news coverage on Favre's every move (if he joined the Panthers that is) would be a welcome change of pace right now. Like I said before, I don't care if I ever hear the name Steve Smith again... so please stop this lame madness "journalists!"

Note to Smith: Events don't define you, your actions do. FYI

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 12, 2008 7:18:44 PM

Brett,

Yes I was being sarcastic. Thanks for pointing out to gchan what I thought was obvious. It's not as funny if you have to point it out.

SYRPEES,

Get off it already. "Pray tell", the very man Steve sucker punched forgave him for christ's sake. Did his refusal to give you or your kid an autograph butt hurt you so bad that you will spend the rest of your life criticizing this man. He made a mistake. He owned up to it and took the punishment Foxxy dealt him. It was self imposed. He could have appealed it to the NFL and probably be playing this Sunday agaisnt the Bears. He chose to take responsibility, take the punishment, and move on. YOU really need to move on, unless you are a self righteous saint who never made a mistake. Get over yourself feeling the need to bash Steve! That is truly what is getting quite old to tell you the truth.

In other words, most of your posts are informative and unbiased. I appreciate that and enjoy reading them and hearing a different opinion. But the whole steve smith protest is getting a bit ridiculous and makes you seem narrow minded and shallow.

Just my opinion.

Sypris,

I agree with Carolian Wild. I have been reading this blog for some time and see the validity of his/her comment. You clearly have a problem with number 89. You are not going to change the mind of anyone who thinks highly of him. You are only making yourself look bad as a person who is unwilling to forgive. Forget, no, but you must forgive people who make mistakes. Please follow the lead of Mr. Lucas, the victim, and quit wasting your time bashing Smitty. You must realize you are in the minority.

Posted by: David | Sep 12, 2008 7:58:05 PM

I hope they go 2-0 without this madman!

Posted by: Carl Leazer | Sep 12, 2008 9:22:04 PM

Not to be too dickish but does anyone else see the irony in somebody calling Smitty a c-r-e-t-a-n?

Posted by: swiznami | Sep 12, 2008 9:52:13 PM

Note to Sypris: Events and Actions go hand in hand. You can't have one without the other.

Reading your reaction you would think that Steve Smith punched you in the face...but he didn't and instead arguments such as your won come off a little pretentious and a little outdated. (I.E. Ken Lucas is already over it)

Posted by: The Climaxan | Sep 12, 2008 9:53:34 PM

Syrpis-
You really make yourself look very small with the name calling and comments about Steve Smith. Oh, did I upset you by mentioning his name? Get over it! If Ken Lucas and the rest of the team can get past it, you should be able to as well. If you can't do that, then at least keep it civil.

As for the "event" in question: He is clearly talking about the 2 week suspension. He isn't ignoring his actions that led to it. He has accepted his responsibility and punishment like a grown-up. He wants to be remembered for everything he has done in his life and career, not just this unfortunate mistake. That shouldn't be too hard to understand.

Posted by: FrankieB2 | Sep 12, 2008 9:56:05 PM

whoops, typo. I meant "such as yours". Don't know where "won" came from

Posted by: The Climaxan | Sep 12, 2008 9:56:54 PM

I surely don't understand what it is about you guys and Steve Smith. He made a mistake, and it is obvious that he was sorry for it. John Fox dealt the punishment, and Steve Smith went with it. If he would have appealed, he would have got it reduced to one game like another certain reciever from the Broncos.

After the Bears game this will all be over. And just for the record, I shall be attending the Panthers game with a sign that says "#89 will punch out the competition." It's going to be a pretty good haha for the game.

Posted by: Revshawn | Sep 12, 2008 10:24:50 PM

We all make mistakes, but Steve is a big enough man to admit to it and Ken was big enough to forgive him and to want the suspension lifted. Let's not forget how many exciting moments 89 has given us over the years. I look forward to him returning in another week and hope we are 2-0 when he gets back!

Posted by: Lynn | Sep 12, 2008 11:01:36 PM

Revshawn-

Don't be a moron, "steve smith will punch out the competition"? Come on dude, that's not a sense of humor, that's preschool. Anyone sober could do better than that.

Posted by: drew | Sep 13, 2008 1:26:13 AM

Why are you taking this so personally. Surely your love affair with this SOB is making all of you look stupid. And obviously I'm refferring to to this crap being drudged up again, not to mention you SS d*ckbangers overlooked the fact that I'm obviously not the one that keeps bringing up this punks insignificant story back up. Finally, hypocritical saint??? You evngelical types are what fuel the fire with all this Christian bashing to begin with. So go get a clue quackers.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 13, 2008 2:29:44 AM

Moreover, he's been talking about not letting this event define him from the get-go. If some of you Smith groupies knew the difference between his a** and your faces, you might actually have a clue.

Until then, my point was not start bashing the creep again, but to make the case that this lame a** story should already be dropped. It's just as interesting as reading some of these posts some of you dorks put up.

So get a grip already and back off geniuses!

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 13, 2008 3:15:49 AM

One more thing, wild...
It was me who refused to get his autograph. Disliked the SOB since the first time he punched out a teammate. Sure after all of his successes and positive community involvement (not to overlook the fact that he seemed to get that rage under control) I began to come around. Appearantly, I was an idiot for doing so. I fell for the hype. What's your excuse?

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 13, 2008 3:26:03 AM

Sanity check...

Okay. Back off for a second folks and reconsider this situation. First, it's not the journalists/sportswriters here at the Observer dredging it up again. I imagine there's plenty of people and Panther fans (both those who like and now dislike Steve Smith) who probably wondered what he did while the team was winning in San Diego without him. And if Smith is going to post a blog about it on his youth-oriented website, then it's perfectly fine to mention it over here in the Panthers blog. I, for one, am perfectly fine with reading this information. And I'm glad it was brought to my attention here, because I haven't exactly bookmarked Smith's blog.

Secondly, I too am getting tired of the Steve Smith animosity. Not because I've got my head up any of his body parts. But just because it's patently clear that the people who matter (i.e., Ken Lucas, Steve Smith, and the entire team) have put it behind them. One of the things I find admirable about this situation is exactly that fact.

After all, it could be much, much worse. What if Steve had decided to appeal the team's suspension through the player's union? He didn't. That speaks well of him. What if he'd clammed up, gone into seclusion, and never addressed the media or the fans or anyone about it? He didn't. He owned up to it. He made his appearance with the media. He apologized. And he did it without having to resort to reading a prepared statement...or worse, asking his agent or someone to release it for him.

And what if Smith had continued to project an air of being the victim instead of Ken Lucas? He didn't. He indicated very clearly it was all his fault. There was no shared responsibility. Now, I happen to think that's a really big statement on Steve's part, because there were plenty of avenues for apologists to take on his behalf given the contention he and Lucas seem to have had over the years. But Smith cut out that kind of stance right away so there'd be no further distraction for the team. Again, that speaks well of how he's handling and addressing the aftermath of his actions. In many ways, the outcome of all this is about as positive as anyone could possibly want.

So I take all of those facts as an indication things will be okay. Some people aren't going to let go of it, though. They'll hold a grudge. And as long as the type of comments Syrpis expresses keep coming up everytime a Steve Smith story is posted...and there's a micro-analysis of every word Smith utters or writes when he refers to the "event"...individuals who respond like that will never truly have forgiven him...much less forgotten what happened.

And that's the difference maker. If you're willing to forgive, then forgive. If you're willing to forgive, but not forget (and presumably keep a close watch on him for signs of a continuing behavior problem), then that's okay too. But if you're not going to forget it...and you're not going to forgive him...and you're just going to bring up your own personal bile for the situation everytime a reference is made to what happened or someone re-examines the aftermath of it...then, honestly, that's a character flaw in the individual reacting that way, and not simply Steve Smith.

Just my two-cents,

And, as long as the Christian faith angle has been brought up, here's two relevant lessons...

1) Don't cast stones when we're all imperfect people, too. It's between Smith, God, and those he wronged. Not us.

2) Turn the other cheek. Lucas pretty much did this...and forgave his enemy. We should follow his lead if we somehow feel wronged as well. The people who matter (his teammates, etc.) have done exactly that. How can we do any less when we're so much more removed from the situation than they are?

Another two-cents,

NSpicer--- try not be so biased and tell that to the a**holes who came on here and got personal with me. I was just joking referencing how political Smith sounded with the phrase "the even" and Carolina Wild and his sidekicks took it personally and got their panties in a bunch. I'm the victim here, not Smith.

And yes, it is the fault of someone bringing it back up all the time of "bringing it back up all the time." That should be a no-brainer. More importantly, you honestly think people care about Smith's every move?? Talk about idol worship....

In short, when you say things like...

"And, as long as the Christian faith angle has been brought up, here's two relevant lessons...

How can we do any less when we're so much more removed from the situation than they are?"
Try not to make sure your bias gets in the way of your good judgement and project to ALL THOSE INVOLVED.

BTW, I respect what you right and look forward to reading the things you have to say most of the time, but you are waaayy off the mark in this case. If hypocrite applies to anyone, it's everybody involved here... from Lucas to me---

Stone has been cast: please stop beaming me. I mean... it was supposed to be a f**king lame joke and I get insulted and attacked by immature, hypocritical, know-it-alls. Get a grip, for crying out loud. Truly, this is insane!

* "the event"

...what a joke. Hey people, please forgive me for this event, will you?! LOL, a**holes. LMAO
