here's to a great season!!
1) any word on the starter opposite muhammad?
2) will gates be a full speed or still hurting?
3) what are your opinions of the d-line for the panthers this season. other then peppers i think this could be an area of concern this year, brayton lewis and kemo-fatso are weak, no apss rush other then peppers who is forced to drop back alot because of scheme by trgovac?

Do you think Steve Smith will finsih his career as a Carolina Panther?
A: Hard to tell at this point. But at this point, we'd say yes, he'll finish his career a Panthers. He's established in the Charlotte area and seems to making a strong effort to make things right.

1) any word on the starter opposite muhammad?
A: looks like d.j. hackett
2) will gates be a full speed or still hurting?
B: playing, but probably not totally full speed

C: agree that it's an area to watch, especially early in the season. the d-line is quicker, but questions are the depth and how they'll do against the run. should be better vs. the pass. looks like the scheme will be a bit different this year, more freedom make plays, according to the players

N SPICER ASKS:
A lot of NFL analysts are still saying Steve Smith shouldn't have been suspended by the team for these first two games...i.e., this was a team-induced penalty and not something the league would have mandated to punish him for the fight with Ken Lucas during training camp.
They also claim that sitting Smith for these two games essentially hurts the team's chances for success by removing one of their best players against what should amount to two very difficult teams (i.e., San Diego and Chicago).
If that's the case, do you believe this move will ultimately hurt the Panthers' chances of winning these two games...and if so, does that jeopardize their chances to make the playoffs...and as a result, does that not also jeopardize Fox and Hurney's jobs, considering many people believe this may be their last year unless they can dramatically improve the team's performance?
ANSWER FROM CHARLES:
The Panthers did the right thing. If Fox had not suspended Smith, he could have lost the team. Instead, he won their respect. Win or lose the first two games, it was the right thing to do and will help the team in the long run.

MORE NEWS FROM QUALCOMM:
Chargers starting LT Marcus McNeill is on the inactive list due to his injury, so that means L.J. Shelton will start and try to block Panthers DE Julius Peppers.
Here are other SD inactives: QB Charlie Whitehurst (former Clemson), CB DeJuan Tribble, LB Anthony Waters, C Nick Hardwick, WR Buster Davis, TE Kris Wilson, DT Brandon McKinney.

So do you think that the 9.5-point spread is that to big or is about right?

N. SPICER ASKS:
How much can we expect to see of Jonathan Stewart today? Does D.J. Hackett look ready to play/start?
CHARLES' ANSWER:
Stewart, as expected, will split carries with DeAngelo. If either of them gets hot, it would make sense for Fox to go with the hot hand, er feet.

Q: Who will be assigned to cover Antonio Gates? And do you think we will be able to run the ball and stop the run?
A: Look for the strongside linebacker -- Na'il Diggs or Landon Johnson when he's in the game -- to cover Gates.
As to the second part of the question, that's what coach John Fox wants out of this team. Defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu will serve as a nose tackle, freeing up the LBs -- especially Jon Beason in the middle -- to make lots of tackles. As for running the ball, that's why they drafted Jonathan Stewart, right? We'll see, but the Chargers' run defense really stout.

DB ASKS:
One more question, in lue of Trainwasher's quetion: do you think the Panthers will stick with the more stout guys up front on defense or opt for the faster line to cover LT by moving Brayton inside?
CHARLES' ANSWER:
You'll see some of both. Brayton and Charles Johnson, perhaps even Peppers, should get time both inside and at end.

RK ASKS:
Seeing as how we have Dan Conner and Landon Johnson ready to play, is there any [word/chance/speculation] of possibly one of them subbing for Thomas Davis, and then play the Joker defense to cover LaDainian Tomlinson - with TD being the Joker?
CHARLES' ANSWER:
Thomas Davis is definitely the best athlete in the group and thus the best choice to shadow LT.
Posted by: Charles | Sep 7, 2008 3:06:24 PM
So how do you stop LT ?

CHARLES ANSWERS:
Jon Beason is your man.

JOHN ASKS:
So do you think that the 9.5-point spread is that to big or is about right?
CHARLES' ANSWER: Sounds about right for a spread, considering the Chargers are regarded as one of the NFL's top teams and are playing at home.

So what is your Prediction. I am going to say 17-14 Panthers

KYLE ASKS:
Who will serve as the Panthers 4th WR? Mark Jones?
What are some of your predicitons for the game like stats and score?
CHARLES' ANSWER:
a) In an emergency, Jones would be the fourth receiver, but look for the Panthers to use Moose, Hackett and Jarrett, with TE Dante Rosario essentially serving as the 4th receiver at times.
b) score predictions:
David says Chargers 27-
Charles says Chargers 24-17, but don't be shocked if it goes the other way.
stats prediction: how about 2 sacks for peppers?

Do you think any Panthers get INT?
Posted by: Kyle | Sep 7, 2008 3:23:00 PM
What is the team's mindset being without Steve Smith for the next 2 games?
Do the players really think they can pull out a win today without him vs one of the best teams in the AFC?
Posted by: James Carl | Sep 7, 2008 3:23:10 PM
Say what you want about T. Davis and his improvement he's still a terrible Cover LB. (which is primary reason! he's moved to Weakside because he can't cover TE's) regardless of what fox says. So why would they put him on LT?!?!? I guess we don't have a choice.
My question is this....What if the Kick Returner guy we signed is terrible on first few kickoffs any chance we see STewart return one??

Hey guys, thanks for doing this answer our questions from the game thingy. How's the view from the press-box at the Q?
My question is; I know this team is built to run the ball, but, is it realistic to believe we can really dominate in the area? I know it is the best way for us to have a chance to win this game. But, I am still a tad leary that I am overly optimistic on how effective we can be. Every good run opens it up for the next one, which will open up the whole playbook. Or something like that.
GO CATS and JAKE!
