Fox Q&A
Here's the transcript from coach John Fox's Monday news conference following the Panthers' 30-7 victory against New Orleans:
Q. Anything new on injuries?
"Nothing new to report on the injury front, just some bumps and bruises. Thomas Davis left briefly and had a little neck sprain."
Q. Do you anticipate Jeff Otah and Ryan Kalil coming back this week?
"They'll be listed day-to-day come Wednesday. We'll wait and see. They'll have a couple of good days today and tomorrow and we'll see how they come along. I think they're getting closer."
Q. Is there a temptation to rest them with a bye week coming up?
"My feeling has always been if they're ready, they play, If they're not, they don't. If they're ready next week and they're cleared, they'll play."
Q. Your thoughts on how the defense played yesterday?
"I've felt good about our defense for most of the season. They've given us opportunities to win. When we play good defense, that's part of the formula. We've done it five times pretty well and two times could have done a little better. I'm pleased overall to day. We still have a lot of football left."
Q. You're facing another excellent passing team this week in the Cardinals.
"They're high powered and lead the NFL in scoring. We played them last year and know what kinds of weapons they have at the wide receiver position. Kurt Warner is an exceptional and they have a big, physical offensive line. I haven't started studying them yet, but I know they create a lot of problems schematically with their defense. They'll be stiff competition. They lead their division. It's a conference game in the NFC, so it's a big game."
Q. Are you happy with the running game?
"I think you just want to hear me say...(laughs) I can always flip back to 'It is what it is.' Both our backs averaged 4.0 per carry. I would like it to be better, sure, but it wasn't all bad. We've been hampered a little with the musical chairs in the offensive line, so that never helps. That's not to blame anybody and not to use it as an excuse. But it's a reality. We're pleased to be 5-2 and pleased with our running game moreso this week than last week."
Q. Were you happy with the punt game?
"We've had some unusual things happen. We've had some personnel changes and a dropped snap. That wasn't planned in practice and I'm sure Jason Baker didn't either. We'll keep plugging away. It was a big test yesterday with what New Orleans brought with pressure and on their returns. I thought our guys answered the bell. Minus one play against Chicago, which I thought at the time had one of the best punt return teams in the league, we had a punt blocked. But I thought our other snaps were good."
Q. Are you impressed with kicker John Kasay's consistency, especially at his age?
"He's a remarkable guy. He's been here for all 100-plus victories in this organization. For a kicker, I don't think people think of them as a leader. But he's a big part of the locker room, which in his case is remarkable. He has as much respect in that locker room as anybody. That says as much off the field as on the field. What he's done is remarkable. A couple of kickers have been in his realm for that length of a career, but not many."
Q. Has not kicking off helped his leg strength?
"I can't really answer that. He had a bad injury some time ago and coming off that for a kicker, especially when it's your plant leg, effects kickoffs more than long field goal attempts. But I'm pleased with his leg. He's had some long field goals for us this year."
Q. Are you happy with how the offensive line has done well in pass protection?
"I think our pass protection hasn't been as good when we've had to throw as it has been in other games. Our ability to run the ball and the threat of running the ball has a lot to do with our protection. That's a philosophy I believe in and a lot of teams in this league that have had success also believe in that."
Q. Do you have a sense of not knowing what the offensive line is because of the injuries?
"For the most part, I like what we've had out there. Frank Omilaye steps in. Geoff Hangartner steps in. That's why we have a 53-man roster. Depth is critical, whether you're bringing somebody in the game or starting as far as what you have out there. There was a question about our running game. I think it's been good, part of the issues have been the rotation in the offensive line. It's not their abilities, it's just when you change -- and a lot was made of our changes in the offseason, about what we'd be like. We didn't know, and we don't know until we start playing. It's worked out fine."
Is there a benefit to playing two strong passing teams back to back?
"We gave up more rush yards yesterday than we did against teams that highlighted the run. It's just different. You realize what they want to do then you try to take that away. It's not an exact formula, but ours is to typically try to take away what they do best. Statistics don't sometimes tell you how the game's going."
Q. With the defensive backs not coming up with those balls, at what point does that become a concern rather than something to have fun with?
"After a win it's a lot easier to joke about things. It's the same with me. It's like blocked punts when we still find a way to win versus when you don't. On defense it's better to be known as ricochet than toast. Pass breakups are still a positive play. Don't lose that concept as a good defensive play. It's just not as great as it could have been."
Q. How's rookie Charles Godfrey playing at safety?
"He's done a reamarkable job. He is still a rookie. He had a little cross-up yesterday late in the game, but I think he's doing really well. He's got a bright future that's important to him. He gives us coverability and speed back there that we may or may have not had in recent times."
Q. How's he doing with the mental aspects?
"From day one, like I said, it's really important to him. He's a smart young man and he works at it. He has skills and we wouldn't have taken him with a high pick if he didn't. As a coach you might not know how his work ethic and how he goes about his business. He's going to get better and we've been nothing but impressed."
Q. Doy you think the NFL is using fines too much to protect offensive players?
"I'd love to answer that, but I can't and I probably won't. I'm not trying to not answer on purpose. Again, as much as I'd like to answer that, I'll kind of stay away. That's going down a road I'm not going. I'm all for player safety."
Q. Can you talk about Kurt Warner?
"He's like a guy we saw last week in Drew Brees. People would ask me about what he looks like and he's like Kurt Warner was in St. Louis. He was making those fast decisions and was very accurate. He's had a resurgence in that. He's playing outstanding. At one time, he was doing that as well as anybody and we're seeing flashes of that now. He's a very quick decision maker and a very accurate passer."
Q. When you played, were you ricochet or toast?
"Probably a little of both. That's why I'm doing what I do now."

What happened to the fire fox, fire Tyrgo, start Matt Moore, Peppers doesnt try, Smitty is bad for team chemistry, etc bandwagon?
Posted by: matt | Oct 20, 2008 2:08:38 PM
No we cannot agree that fox is off the hotseat! 7 weeks into the season and we are 5-2. I believe what he has changed for the better was his ablility to let our offense open things up more, but the fact is he doesn't play with this strategy consistent enough. He needs to understand that players feed off him so when he comes off as nonchalant as he has in the past it transfers to the field. I saw the most energy from Fox yesterday when he inherently grew angry from a bad unnecessary roughness called against one of his players. Consistency is his cryponite and it's something he needs to work on. I am satisfied with the past week's performance, but he needs to understand that you must play to your team's maximum ability and not to your failing coaching game strategy. I am not going to call for his head, but I think with this FIREFOX issue lingering around him it makes him a better coach.
FIREFOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont think he's too worried about it, he'd be offered a head coaching job his firing.
Posted by: matt | Oct 20, 2008 3:15:12 PM
Matt you have to realize that the only thing Panther fans want is a consistent effort! We can deal with losing but if there is no effort that is an entirely different ballgame. Fox would definitely be offered another head coaching job elsewhere but he's wanted in Carolina but so is CONSISTENCY!
Posted by: Sam | Oct 20, 2008 3:22:13 PM
I feel for the most part everyone on that team has consistant effort, the results arent alwasy going to reflect that, of course.
Posted by: matt | Oct 20, 2008 3:35:29 PM
Agreed. All we want is "Consistant" effort. from our team...period! win or lose. Fox has been inconsistant so we will see what he does next week. I mean when other teams are inconsistant such as Cowboys..ppl go nuts over the coaches...and how it's a reflection of the caoch but here somehow the super fox homers! never want to blame him for anything and that drives me nuts...
great game
Great win! now motivated your team to give the same effort win or lose next week and i will have little problem with you fox.

FIREFOX,
You truly are an idiot. I say that with the utmost sincerity and truthfulness. Go change the rubber bands on your braces and make sure you drink milk before bed to get a good night's rest. Oh, and contrary to popular belief, tooth paste does not dry out pimples!
Posted by: The Truth | Oct 20, 2008 3:46:55 PM
Matt,
You are right, we are the "tampon bags" Procton, Keeping it Real (SYPRIS), and the like.....not much to say when all of your arguments get thrown back in your face lol. And douche bags alumni above...by no means do I want you to respond...just know you have been called out and I hope you like eating crow. LOSERS!
Posted by: josh | Oct 20, 2008 3:54:19 PM
Cheven, what would you have Fox do differently than he's done this season?
Posted by: matt | Oct 20, 2008 3:54:40 PM
Matt,
You are right, where are the "tampon bags" Procton, Keeping it Real (SYPRIS), and the like.....not much to say when all of your arguments get thrown back in your face lol. And douche bags alumni above...by no means do I want you to respond...just know you have been called out and I hope you like eating crow. LOSERS!
Posted by: josh | Oct 20, 2008 4:04:32 PM
You make my point even clearer due to the rambling and incoherent post you just made...this is really WAY to easy and I feel kinda bad for picking on you, but everyone needs to be put in their place from time to time so you don't continue to make yourself look like an idiot. I'm really trying to help you. You are WAY out of your league. Change your screen name (KIR/SYRPIS can show you how), attempt to make more productive and intelligent posts, and maybe, just maybe, people would take you more seriously.
Posted by: The Truth | Oct 20, 2008 4:11:11 PM
I like what I am getting out of you, any more built up frustration?
FIREFOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
aka...the GIECO relationship was calling your thought process equivalent to that of a caveman
You make my point as well, but let's stop the silly back and forth. I will keep my voice open regarding the firing of as long as it makes him a better coach.
Posted by: FIREFOX | Oct 20, 2008 4:16:53 PM
FIREFOX,
To make my point even clearer, John Fox is the winningest and most successful coach in Panther's history. He has accomplished more for this organization than a lot of head coaches have their entire careers. You stated "Don't make a statement without any reasoning, you make yourself look like you came from a GEICO commercial, LOL." I would highly recommend, my very SPECIAL friend, that you take your own advice and run with it. You truly look like a moron when you continue to bash Fox and use a screen name as such. Another quote from you "7 weeks into the season, we are 5-2". Yes, that calls for a firing???? Glad to tell you, that is just in the top 5 of the league. Would that qualify as making a statement without any reasoning on your part? Practice what you preach. Just trying to help.
Posted by: The Truth | Oct 20, 2008 4:27:56 PM
You are right. I shouldn't let your views frustrate me. I apologize for saying idiot and moron. I really meant to say ignorant and unfounded. Further, I hate to admit, I failed to realize you actually thought your bashing of Fox made him coach better. I can see you have had an affect on him and if he continues to perform and lead this team to the SB, then by all means, keep posting and I will thank you again after the SB! With all sincerity, I apologize and will say no more. You are doing your part and I applaud you for all that you do.
Posted by: The Truth | Oct 20, 2008 4:36:11 PM
Truth,
Thank you for coming to my defense. However, FIREFOX is my wife's brother-in-law and wants to bust my chops (they use to date). Truth be known, I do read his posts and use them as motivation for upcoming games. He was out of town when we played Tampa, so that explains the drop in performance. Yeah, it is what it is. Please let him continue, because it really does make me a better coach and man. Thanks for all who support.
Posted by: John Fox | Oct 20, 2008 4:49:39 PM
Josh/Biff-- stop trying to act intelligent by trying to belittle others. It makes you look pathetic. You should focus on things you are good at instead. Go sell some insurance or something to someone, OK chad...
Matt, as far as Peppers effort goes, I can't speak for others, but I did say he will do well his contract year (as if last year wasn't by his ongoing contract negotiations). This extra effort makes him more marketable around the league. It's is nothing new for many modern NFL players. CONSISTENCY WOULD BE GREAT! Especially if he gets resigned.
And again, I can't speak for others but who said Smith "was bad for team chemistry?" His on the field abilities or his relationship with other players were not in question. In fact, this distraction would been much worse had it not been for Lucas' actions. How can you reasonably give Smith credit for that??
Posted by: Keeping It Real | Oct 20, 2008 5:15:27 PM
Firefox--- with people like you around, what makes you think Cowher would even want to caoch the Panthers?
Posted by: Keeping It Real | Oct 20, 2008 5:19:15 PM
Wow, this is what our 'fans' do in forums. Talk about firing our coach, bicker and argue about silliness. Just to let you know, that in the real world, the Panthers won by 23 points. You guys act like the Panthers are freaking perfect, every football team is gonna have a slip up. Remember we went 11-5 was the record we went when we went to the Super Bowl..yeah we lost 5 games. So what our coach doesnt meet your expectations sometimes, you get outplayed and you have to bounce back. However, the Panthers suspended there star reciever for 2 games knowing that a decision like that could cost us dearly, but they kept the team morality high, and its paying off. We're 5-2 and we have a favorable (not gimmees) schedule ahead that could put us at 9-2 or 8-3 before the last stretch. So lets stand behind our team and coach and lets see where they take us.

There she is...I knew you would come out. Too easy, too easy. lmao

Good point real deal! I like it, I like it!

Real Truth,
You go man! Screw all these losers! I too, hope that not one Panther sees this site! If they do, know that these cry babies on here are the minority. Keep pressing and more people are behind you that don't visit this site!

hey gang, flying under the radar I bet no one even noticed who led the team in tackle's on defense. you guessed it. Ole CHRIS GAMBLE. He had 8 solo's while thomas davis was the closest to him with 6. Hey NFL, I sure hope you're listening when I tell you: just keep on trying to turn that right side corner and he'll keep bustin your stupid a-- for ya. The right side is closed, out of business, no mo tickets. Big league CB in the house. CHRIS "hammer down, talk of the town, shut down corner" GAMBLE!

Stork--- well said!
dork/aka "josh" just keep proving me right, kiddo.

FIREFOX is the type of fan who would enjoy a SB win about 10 minutes and then launch into a diatribe about how Fox got lucky, it was all the players or the other team gave the game away. anyone who is screaming for the coach to be fired when the team is 5-2 is an idiot. You could also argue there's a touch of psychosis too if he really believes his negative posts are motivating the coach himself. For adult conversation you should try this blog:

Hay stork302:
Nothing makes these players perform like a contract year. Only wish they were all in a contract year every year.
