Kasay nears milestones; Moose sports Barack

Wednesday notes:

-- Kicker John Kasay is nearing two more milestones. He needs nine field goals to tie Nick Lowery for seventh on the NFL’s all-time list with 383 and 14 points to tie Al Del Greco for 12th on the league’s all-time scoring list with 1,584. Kasay, who has made 21 straight field goals over two seasons (16 this season), needs one more to tie his personal record of 22 straight.

-- Receiver Muhsin Muhammad had a Barack Obama T-shirt in his locker on Wednesday.
“I’m thrilled,” he said of the outcome of Tuesday’s election.

Muhammad said the election wasn’t a hot topic of discussion around the locker room, however.

“It’s not a real political atmosphere,” he said. “Guys discuss some issues and topics, but not we’re not divided in the locker room because of politics.”

-- Fox said not to read too much into the poor performance of second-year Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell in last week’s 24-0 loss.

“Any time you come into this league, you’ll have growing pains,” Fox said of Russell, who completed 6-of-19 passes for 31 yards and one interception against the Falcons. “A lot’s been made of last week. But we’ve seen him have good games and once in a while we all have clunkers. He’s capable with his arm and feet. He’s got a tremendous arm and has enough weapons to spread it around.”

-- Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, who had a pacemaker/defibrillator inserted in his chest Monday morning after doctors discovered an irregular heartbeat, was released from Carolinas Medical Center on Wednesday. Team spokesman Charlie Dayton said it was unknown whether Richardson would travel to Oakland for Sunday’s game.

I hope Mr. Richardson is going to be ok. One of my favorite Panther memories was meeting him in 2005 when I drove up from Indianapolis to see the Panthers play at Detroit. He saw me wearing my #51 Panthers jersey and was big enough to walk over to the sideline while the Panthers were warming up in the endzone. He made sure to shake my hand and I was literally blown away. Here he is as the owner, but knows that the fans are where the passion meets the product. He is a class act. I made sure to tell him that all Panther fans don't just come from the Carolinas and it brought a smile to his face. I know he probably doesn't remember that, but I'll remember it for a long time. Here's to a speedy recovery Mr. Richardson.

JR is a class act. I am a PSL owner and on numerous occasions upon my way to the stadium, I have seen Mr. Richardson in his golf cart turn around and give an elderly couple, or a physically challenged person a ride to their gate. I won't say all, but most people in his position can't see the trees for the forest, but Mr. Richardson sees them with clarity. God bless him and his (Panther) family.

Anybody notice that the Raiders realized that Steve Smith was coming to town, so they cut DeAngelo Hall to save him from total humiliation?

Raiders' brass is sending a message to their players; "shape up or ship out!" Javon Walker is also on the bubble. Watch for that team to rally this week. The Panthers will have their hands full, and may lose if they are caught snoozing.

On the other hand, if the Panthers come out looking to dominate the rest of their opponents this year, starting with the Raiders, they will have no problems destroying most of them (especially this West coast collection of overhyped flops).

BTW, I have to wonder if Mike Singletary influenced what is taking place in Oakland this week. You have to love that old fashioned no nonsense approach.

Speaking of Jerry Richardson, I've got something to add about his class act. I wrote an article for a smalltown newspaper after going to see the Panthers in Superbowl XXXVIII. Nothing major. Just a simple writeup about what the experience was like to share with folks back home who were fans, but had never been to a live Superbowl, before.

My mom (who thought it was a much bigger deal than me) clipped the article and sent it to the Panthers organization with a simple cover letter explaining how I'd come by the tickets (i.e., I won them in the lottery as a PSL holder) and how much I'd appreciated it. She didn't expect anything to come of it. And, if she'd told me about it, I wouldn't have either.

But not only did the Panthers organization take notice...but Jerry Richardson himself wrote her back! He included a hand-written note for her to pass on to me. I was blown away. He didn't just send back a form letter. The guy sat down...took out a pen...and hand-wrote a response. I have no idea how many owners would do something like that, but I don't imagine it's very many.

So, get well, Jerry. I think you're quite possibly the classiest guy in the entire NFL. And maybe we'll see your Panthers in another Superbowl real soon.

My two-cents,
--Neil

Of course Moose was wearing an Obama T-Shirt. What else would you epect some named Muhammd do? However if Moose is ever planning to visit the White House he may have trouble getting securiy clearance. They frown on someone with drugs and weapons charges.

Panthers Studs & Duds post can be found here.

I'd like your input.

Mike Nelson, do you realize how many athletes have been to the white house? I'm sure out of the hundreds, many have charges that are frowned upon.

I mean Moose is black, Obama's well...half black, so there is some correlation there I guess. Moose is muslim? clarify that for me guys, but fo sho' Obama (abomination) is a muslim.!!

Thanks for inserting politics into the Sports Section. The only place I felt I could go without being inundated with political garbage has now been violated.

It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with Tuesday's outcome - the Sports Section is not the place for it.

David Scott and Charles Chandler, if you wanted to mention politics, please go apply to for jobs on the Editorial Page.

Spicer, let me guess...you cheer for a black as a carolina player just not for president? hum....

Okay people, the election is over and if you comment on that, use the home page for that. Lets get back to business. Oh yeah, we play the Raiders this weekend. Atlanta shut them out last weekend so we should go over there and kick them while they're down and go for the throat.

I want to echo the kind respects towards Mr. Richardson, he is a fine example of a hard working guy who is humble in his position, remembering that he has much to be thankful for...and not to mention he is/was a Baltimore Colt .
Our prayers are with him and his family

Sad to hear that Moose would stoop to bringing politics into a team atmosphere. What about the guys whose candidate lost? Maybe even more - what about the millions of fans who supported McCain. What about the majority of white Panther fans? Inconsiderate, selfish, and petty to rub it in the face of others. Hang the loss of profits from Panther sales squarely on Moose's shoulders.

Posted by: charlesbright | Nov 6, 2008 4:50:33 PM

How was Moose 'rubbing it in' by wearing a t-shirt? come one. I doubt the players who oppose Obama are that sensitive to get upset by a freakin T SHIRT!!

Posted by: matt | Nov 6, 2008 5:11:46 PM

AJ,

Kindly go back and re-read my post. I made no comment on anything regarding politics. I believe you confused someone else's obviously partisan post for mine...which can easily be done when a single forum like this tries to combine sports with politics.

I agree with Russ. There's nothing to be gained by either reporting on Muhsin's support for Obama...or the ensuing political argument and bigoted commentary it's bound to incite here. Leave that for the political blogs, guys.

Just my two-cents,

Look matt: Here's the way this thing works. We each get to express our own views, and those views are not subject to your qualitative reviews and judgments. What I said was my view not yours, and you are have no business questioning my views as they are mine and not yours. So go take a freakin leap.

Spice, you have a valid point. Unfortunately, I have been guilty of bringing politics in myself (and quickly regretted it). Sports should remain an entertaining escape from reality. Unfortunately, private details about players and administrators does get reported (which includes their salaries and how they feel about it). When confronted with that regularly, it's hard not to comment/respond to it. LET'S NOT OVERLOOK BUSH'S EXTENDED INVITATION TO TOM BRADY...!!!

charlesbright...but this is an open forum and I can disagree your comments, even if it doesnt make me right. However, you are wrong to say that Moose wearing the tshirt is flaunting it in front of his team.
