Beason's non-P.C. answer

Linebcker Jon Beason is a prideful player and one of those guys who will answer a reporter's question straight-up.

Monday afternoon, still less than 24 hours after a 34-28 overtime loss to the Giants, Beason was asked about New York's big night running the ball. The Giants rolled up 301 yards on the ground, most by an opponent in Panthers history. Derrick Ward had 215 of them, an individual record for an opponent. After blaming sloppy play and poor communication on the Panthers' inability to stop the Giants' running game, Beason was asked if the talents of Ward and backfield mate Brandon Jacobs might have had something to do with it.

"I hate you asked that question," Beason said. "The politically correct thing to say is they're a great combination of running backs -- really good backs. And they are. But based on the film, of the 300 yards, let's say, uh, 250 were on us. That's how I'll answer that question." -- David Scott

WE ARE THE ONLY TEAM IN THE NFL WHERE THE HEAD COACH HAS INVENTED AND IS USING THE "PREVENT OFFENSE"

I like the fire. No one can deny Beason's passion and intensity. It stinks that we have absolutely no depth in the interior D-line.

Posted by: BD | Dec 22, 2008 7:22:35 PM

While I was watching the game, I noticed our linebackers were committing to gaps before the running back committed to one. All Ward had to do was wait for the LB to commit, then run through a different gap. Over and over again.

It's actually good to hear that from Beason. Hopefully that will lead to our D stepping up big time on Sunday against a big time offense.

Turbovac needs to be canned. There is talent on the defense but they are constantly out of position, and would someone please tell me why we don't rush te passer more often.

Posted by: BDUB | Dec 22, 2008 7:43:58 PM

BDUB - Amen! I've been screaming that for a while now. We have a top 5 defense talent wise, but with Turd-o-vac at the helm, it is what it is. Get rid of him, and we may actually be able to go somewhere next year. Our offense has come a long way from where is was under Henning. Now, it's time to upgrade the DC

Posted by: Defensive Upgrade Needed | Dec 22, 2008 8:09:33 PM

What about Lucas and a secondary that really stinks?

Posted by: mtncat | Dec 22, 2008 8:09:52 PM

Turgovac has become a swear word in Panther land... no tackling, no press coverage and no pressure on the QB.

This was a golden opportunity and a game we should've won.

The last player who questioned heart on this team is having a great year with the Jets. I sure wish we had him back, he would have been a big help last night.

Does anyone know who calls the plays on this team. Dan Henning is calling more aggressive plays for the Dolphins than is his replacement.

Turdovic needs to go. Lucus needs to go.
How is it that Marshall played so good last year and know he only spot plays.

I think who ever is calling the plays does NOT trust jake. When we have gotten leads the ball is not thrown again.

Who was the bone head that had Williams on the sideline on first and second down of our 1 drive in OT. Did the bonehead forget that Williams had scored all of our touchdowns.

Pitiful.........We were out coached again.....

are some fans moving on to the off-season and firing coaches? are we the Lions? the players and coaches will go out to the practice field this week, fix the run fits, and grind out a win panther style next week at New Orleans. We locked up a playoff spot this past weekend, but because of a narrowly missed FG in New York last night we only hear about the negative. We are in the playoffs. We can win the Lombardi trophy. what position was this team in this time last year?

Posted by: thedude | Dec 22, 2008 10:01:28 PM

I loved the way the panthers played last night. I saw heart and determination until the very end. I was ready to write the whole team off after the Atlanta game, but now they are at least showing up to play. As long as they keep fixing mistakes, stay on an even keel, and zealously pour themselves into their profession, I will continue to pull for them. By the way, I like Jake, Ken Lucas, John Fox, and all the others some of you haters are prone to jump on every time the wind blows. John Beason is a man. I am thankful for his integrity and respect him for taking responsiblity when so many in these times seem to point the finger elsewhere instead of at themselves.

Personally I don't think we'll see the NYG again because we'll have homefield throughout. I think the Falcons will go to NY and beat the crap out of that garbage team. Atlanta can stop the run and have healthy DT's. The Giants can't stop the run and Atlanta will run all over them. Then we'll get Atlanta here.

Posted by: Stewie | Dec 22, 2008 10:55:54 PM

folks, the game was won in overtime, at that point we had lost BOTH DT's - BOTH! You loose the interior of any line and the other team is going to aim right up the gut where Johnson and Hayden were playing and thats what they did. Let off Turg and Fox and Kasay and anyone else you feel like throwing under the bus.

In the Key Moments article, they left out this play: Giants win the coin toss in overtime and elect to receive the ball. After being stopped on their first two downs, Eli throws into double coverage where Gamble is in the perfect position to get an interception deep in Giant's territory to set up a game winning score for the Panthers. The rookie safety, who was having a monster game, comes flying across and knocks the ball out of play instead with the inside of his left elbow (obviously trying to be the hero and make a catch wide receivers would have difficulty making). ----THE GAME WAS WON FOR THE SECOND TIME HAD GAMBLE BEEN ALLOWED TO MAKE THE INT!!! Come on Godfrey! Don't be a hero in a game where the coaches make it a point to not do that! The played basic hard-nosed football and were in a position to win twice!!!

On the lighter side, this does go to show just how much this team is capable of. I hope the players can bounce back emotionally from this loss and get their focus back.

wow, this is only the start of a war of words

Posted by: matt | Dec 23, 2008 12:43:09 AM

Can anyone remember us stopping a 2 point conversion this year? I remember GB and this one against the Giants. Stat came up during the game that NFL average is 40%. I don't know how many left slants have been completed against this secondary this year. Jake had a couple of INT's dropped by the Giant DB's, maybe a symptom of the cold weather, maybe that's why their playing defense instead of offense.

Basic premise with this team, 11 point lead and the defense goes into prevent and lets opposition chip away and either tie or go ahead. This may work against the bottom feeders of the league but will and has bite us against the better teams in the league.
I think we are seeing that Jenkins was not properly replaced. For whatever his faults were, you can imagine what this defense would have been with him out there. Hands down we would be class of the NFL.

Posted by: jeff | Dec 23, 2008 7:38:24 AM

KIR, you are an idiot, Godfrey had no clue Gamble was in position to make a pick, for all he knew a wideout was there. He made the right play just knocking the ball out and trying to make a play himself.

Posted by: Billy | Dec 23, 2008 8:10:08 AM

Why all the moaning and groaning? Last time I checked we had a heck of good football team. Yes, I too am disappointed that the Giants ran for 300 on us. But you know what? Given the injury status I'm going to give our D a pass on that. Don't fret... Beason and the others will spend their Christmas studying film. We can all kick back and chill. The ship is not sinking.

Posted by: David | Dec 23, 2008 8:13:44 AM

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Beason is an excellent player and seems like a stand-up guy. However, how can you make that comment? No, the "250 yds" weren't on you, ALL 301 yds were on you (and your defense).
Bottom line, Giants WORE THEM OUT by the end of the game. And, kicking field goals in the Meadowlands is NOT the same as kicking a field goal in the mostly pristine conditions at BOA Stadium...

Beason is absolutely right on this one...the RBs from the Giants did not "run" all over us, they "walked" thru the doors we opened for them, and this was due to several reasons. The biggest was that our depth at D-Tackle is not where it should be. I don't think too too high on Kemo (definitely think he is overpayed) but his size and strength always commands the double teams and allows for the LBs to get hit less and flow thru to make tackles. Our LBing corps had to do a lot of shedding in this game, especially against "Trap" or "Pulling Guard" plays...those were where the Giants and Ward made the biggest gains.

With the right depth at that position and maybe a little more burst in their step (youth will give you that) we would have been all over Ward and Jacobs. The one bright spot of the game that I saw was how well we did against Jacobs...you take away the short yardage TDs he had (which the one that came from the Penalty on Lucas was BS), he really didn't have a big role in the game. Hopefully we go after a good DT in the draft in the 2nd round or a good price in free agency and we can change all of that. Personally, I would like for Kemo to go bye-bye, save a little bit of money to put back into Peppers and Gross and spend our first pick (2nd round) on a DT.

The only other thing that I thought went wrong against the Giants was that in the second half, we didn't get the ball to Smitty nearly enough. He got the ball 5 or 6 times in the first half and look at how well it opened things up for DWill and the running game. The Giants could never put more then 8 people in the box in order to keep Smith underbay. But in the Second half, they were loading the box with 8 at the minimum, if not normally 9 and the run game started to fall off towards the end. If we would have put the ball in Smitty's hands the same way we did during the first half, DWill would have had another 2 or 3 TDs from big runs and the game would have never came down to Ward running crazy or a missed Field Goal. Those 300 yards rushing from the Giants would have been nothing to DWill's 180+ yards and Smittys 100+ yards...

Just my 2 cents...

Whoever took Williams out of the game in OT should be Fired period. This person has no business being associated with football.

Will someone tell us why this happened.

John Fox said he likes to spread the wealth. Get real you bloated buffon.

Posted by: kay | Dec 23, 2008 9:26:44 AM

Start Matt Moore

John Fox said that Jake was not comfortable throwing the ball down the field.

Let Beason call the defensive plays.
Turd must be flushed soon.

Fire Fox anyone can stand over there and chew gum.

I agree that the Def coordinator must go. Lets not lose sight of the points other teams are putting up on us. Green Bay scored on every possession of the second half except the last one when they had to pass only. Tampa Bay scored tons, The falcons killed us and then you take a team like the giants who had given up 14 sacks in their last two games and score one puny td and let them put up 35, come on. Guy does not attack he reacts and thats how you lose these types of games. The offense (cant believe this has happened) has carried us.
