Change of heart: Trgovac out

Mike Trgovac has had a change of heart and will not be returning as the Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator, according to team general manager Marty Hurney.

" We offered Trgo a contract and told him we wanted him back, but he informed us last night he wanted to pursue other options," said Hurney.

As recently as earlier Wednesday, Trgovac was planning to remain with the Panthers and sign a new contract. He, coach John Fox and Hurney were together at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and were making plans for the 2009 season.

Trgovac, who has been the Panthers defensive coordinator since 2003,  could not be reached for comment.

Fox is now expected to put on hold his search for defensive line and linebackers coaches to focus first on getting a new coordinator. Earlier this week, defensive tackles coach Sal Sunseri decided to leave for a college job at Alabama, and linebackers coach Ken Flajole went to the St. Louis Rams as defensive coordinator.

Never have I ever been more happy in my life. He's finally gone! The DC that was good for a couple of years after the Super Bowl and thenafter just stuck up the gameplan.

We can't have a DC that doesn't adjust when people start finding ways to win halfway through the season. Someone who just lets his linebackers hang back in coverage while people like Kurt Warner pick them apart. Someone that will allow our linebackers to do what they do and wreck havok on a offensive line.

He just made the game plan too simple. The Panthers were figured out by early midseason. We need someone that can jumble up the gameplan a bit and make someone scratch their head. I look forward to whom Hurney names as his replacement.

Get Ron Meeks!

Now, lets not get another wimp like him Fox! Get someone tough, like Del Rio. Someone who isn't afraid to pressure the QB with all-outblitzs ect.

By the way, I don't want to come off as a total douche. I wish Trgo well in future career opportunities and I appreciate the job he did here as a coach.

But its time for CHANGE baby!

So, all the defensive coaches are leaving. Seems like they all knew that someone was going to get blamed on their side. Makes one ponder whether the ship is sinking or just changing course. Too bad Jack Del Rio won't come back.

Get Steve Wilkes from Chicago!

A lot of people say Trgo really sucked and he couldn't come up with creative gameplans ect.

I don't really think thats the case. I don't think he was very good, but he didn't suck necessarily. And look at what he did to new Orleans this year. (not counting the second half of the week 17 game) He had a very creative gameplan that worked pretty well. In the end, I think he became to conservative and ran too much bend don't brake, and on top of that I think some of the veteran players stopped buying into his system.

Talk about Change and Hope, Thank YOU!!

I really miss Del Rio...

Do you really think it matters? The new DC will run what Fox tells him.

But hey, if it makes everyone feel better.

I am glad, but what gutless garbage. Nobody believes they didn't tell the guy that he had to go, and they would craft this message that he is leaving on his own. Whatever, keep the image you hold so dear. Now, get Monty Kiffin in here.

What sucks is Sal left because he wanted to coach linebackers, and hopefully make it big as a college football coach. Meanwhile Flajole (who is an outstanding coach) is leaving after him.

If Flajole had left earlier we could have put Sal to coach the linebackers!

Trgovac is the reason Peppers wants out. Maybe now, we'll get a defensive coordinator that will blitz more than once a game. This is good news. It may be too late to keep Peppers but this certainly helps the situation.

GREAT NEWS!!!! Now THAT make my day..

see ya sucka!

@ Dave

His first DC was Del Rio, who didn't play conservative and ran the 2nd rated defense in the NFL.

so Fox does have a lot of blame for the defense last year, but he's proven with a good DC he's a lot better.

Forget Peppers...if he doesn't want to be here then let him go!

Posted by: William | Jan 22, 2009 12:06:21 PM

doubt this will keep Pepster here though. Maybe Hurney give him 3 year monster contract and a vacation allowance so he can enjoy cities outside of Carolina? And let him try outside linebacker to see if he really is capable of helping the team to win a superbowl championship playing off a 34? maybe pay for performance contract since any team that wants him is no guarantee that they would be better than carolina with a gutsy blitz defense?

I glad he did the honorable thing and resigned. Please Mr. Richardson bring us a Def Coordinator that know something about applying pressure to the QB and quit all of this zone mess.

Posted by: Fasteddie | Jan 22, 2009 12:10:13 PM

will just be more of the same as Fox will assuredly bring in some schlep "yes" man who will just keep running vanilla pudding defenses...

doesn't it speak for itself that all of the D coaches are jumping ship? it speaks volumes about them not wanting Fox to ruin their chances of moving up the coaching ranks by micromanaging the D, but then passing on all of the blame!

GOD IS GOOD; good luck with life but the fans have spoken and maybe the voice of the fans was the reality check that led to the change of heart.

I feel sorry for any defense as long as they run that offense.
